37072 at Essendine - 25 May 1979. Essendine, on the ECML between Peterborough and Grantham, was an excellent location to observe and photograph trains before the line was electrified. This pic was taken from the farm occupation bridge which gave views both north (as here) and south. A few hundred metres south of here the main road (A6121) bridge gave an excellent view south over the site of Essendine station.

Essendine station was formerly the junction for branches to both Stamford and Bourne. The Bourne branch closed in 1957, and the Stamford branch (along with Essendine station) closed in 1959.

These two made a great pair at the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway's 2008 diesel gala. DRS 37087 was named after the railway to celebrate the line's 40th anniversary as a preserved line. Recently 66784 was similarly named for its 50th anniversary. How time flies.

Having run an extensive trip around Kent and parts of East Sussex, the next part of the trip would see a run down on the branch line from Purley to Caterham. After that, it was a return to South Croydon, for one more reversal.
