As a child I used to love my Lego train, but as an adult builder, I have built a grand total of three LEGO train models in the last fifteen years. So, I'm not an experienced train builder and was a bit apprehensive about building this one. It came together nicely and works well as a stationary model. However, I have designed it with the possibility of running it on Lego track in mind. For that I will have to remove the forward part of the cylinders, to allow the pony truck to swing out, and I am in the process of building a tender that houses a train motor and battery box.

Preserved London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Class 2MT 2-6-0 steam locomotive 46521 and me at Loughborough Locomotive Works on the heritage Great Central Railway in Leicestershire (UK).

46521 was designed by (ex) LMS Chief Mechanical Engineer Henry George Ivatt at British Railways Swindon Works in February 1953 and was withdrawn from service on October 31st 1966.

I was built a few months later in 1967. ☺️

On May 4th 1945 at 2030 hours the BBC announced, much to the relief of soldiers that all German troops in north-west Germany,Holland and Denmark had surrendered . 4th wilts( Wiltshire regiment) who were posted at Belsen,Germany got this back home. These are grim reminder of the past , collected at Belsen concentration camps.

Last weekend, I displayed models at the Great Western Brick Show (aka. Steam) in the UK. One of the models I took, was my Allelys lorry carrying an Ivatt Class 2 locomotive. I designed the locomotive such that it can run. At the museum, after hours, I was able to give it a proper shake down at a layout built by the LEGO Northern UK Railway – LNUR. This is a video of it in action courtesy of Andrew Harvey.

After a false start, with a few bits pinging off, it completed a few laps of the layout without problems. In this video, at first, it is moving quite slowly, but after it takes the turn and is overtaken, I had it speed up. It also completed a few laps with two wagons behind it and did OK. Ultimately, though, after maybe a dozen laps, something failed, causing it to derail whilst at high speed.

It was a lot of fun and I am well pleased with how well it did, given that I never build steam locomotives. Thanks to the guys from LNUR for being good sports!

Iowa Interstate (IAIS) QJ steam locomotive 6988 slowly rolls past the SACR train at South Amana, IA. The QJ has just serviced and the crew grabbed a quick lunch. The QJ will turn just east of this location on the wye. Once recoupled to their train, they will head back to Newton and tie down.

The locomotive is a so-called Ivatt Class-2 2-6-0. I picked this particular locomotive because I have a picture of this very truck carrying this type, so I know the truck can carry it. Furthermore, the size and scale suits Lego's own train wheels. Finally, I hope to display this model at the Great Western Brick show, which is held in a former railway works where this locomotive was built.
