Butterley Reservoir is the most distinguishing feature of both the area and of the Midland Railway, which crosses the expanse of water on a causeway. The reservoir dates back to 1794 when it was constructed to serve the Cromford Canal. It now serves as a major recreation area, frequented by anglers, ramblers, twitchers and gricers! The reservoir is well stocked for anglers as well as being a haven for birds. It is a peaceful place, hardly disturbed even by the passage of a train on the causeway. Arguably, the drifting smoke from the chimney of Ivatt Class 2MT No. 46521 adds to the feeling of tranquility, along with the reflection in the reservoir.
