Taken from a slightly different spot than the earlier one in my collection, and hopefully a better edit, Ex B.R. class 10 D3618 "Robin" has stopped to allow brakes to be pinned down before descending downhill to Langley Mill sidings with coal from Moorgreen colliery.

The date was 20th November 1984, location to the rear of Eastwood Hall.

Robin, along with classmates David and Simon were scrapped at the colliery the following year.

NCB Whittle Colliery was located alongside the A1 road in Northumberland and connected to the ECML by a 6 mile branch line through woods and fields with a few minor road crossings.

After steam was displaced, it was worked by a fleet of ex-BR class 10 shunters, most of which had additional headlights fitted at each end for working this branch in the dark.

Here No56 (D4068) eases over a level crossing bringing another rake of empties back to the colliery from the BR exchange sidings at Warkworth in June 1981. When the colliery was closed in 1985 it was cut up on site there

One of the class 10 diesel shunters fitted with Lister Blackstone engine, D3452, is seen in private pwnership at Carne Point on the Fowey Docks branch. New from Darlington Works in 1987, this loco saw fewer than 10 years of BR service before withdrawal and sale. The photo was taken on 3 March 1984 during the Hertfordshire Railtours "Goonbarrow Belle" tour.

Early morning on a dull 30th September 1983 at Whittle colliery, Northumberland, N.C.B. North Eastern area.

Not the best shot in low light of ex B.R. class 10 D4068, carrying the number 56, moving internal user 21 tonners.

The driver saw the two of us taking a picture, braked and leaned out saying if we stayed there while he placed the wagons, he'd stop on the way back and take us to the loco shed. WOW!

That he did, and we nailed some VERY rare track, and saw the other class 10 in the shed, D4069, that being the main reason for our trip ..... seeking out as many ex B.R. locos as we could.

One noticeable thing was how friendly the N.C.B. rail staff were at these North East locations.

At Derek Crouch's site at Widdrington, they even made us a cup of tea.

More accountacncy "unit" numbering bearing no relation to anything that would be meaningful to the staff. Which engine do I take out today gaffer? Haven't got a clue mate, phone head office and see if they know!

Ex BR Class 10, D4092, 'Christine', stored out of used at PD Fuels, Gwaun-cae--Gurwen, 24th June 1987.

BR built a variant of the class 08 with Lister Blackstone engines and GEC traction motors and gave them the class 10. Soon deemed as non-standard, all 146 were withdrawn by 1972 when a number were sold to private industry to replace steam locos.

D4067 was bought by the NCB and used in Kent before transfer north to Nailstone Colliery in Leicestershire in 1976 where it was photographed on 6th April 1978. The following year it was sold into preservation at the Great Central Railway where it has since gained the fictitious number 10119.

The loco stands with other ex BR shunters on an isolated section of track at the then recently closed NBC depot at Philidelphia, County Durham.

A badly exposed image which has also suffered from slide mould, but maybe still worth including here...

I'm fairly sure that this is the scrapyard of Steelbreaking and Dismantling Co., Chesterfield, with Thompson coach E13985E (left) and diesel shunters D2000 & D3614 awaiting the cutting torch - c.08/1969.

Class 03 D2000 was withdrawn from Selhurst (75C) depot on 24/10/1967. Class 10 D3614 had been allocated to Lincoln (40A) shed and was withdrawn from there on 15/03/1969. Both were scrapped during August 1969.

Note the cab on the right hand crane - its original is believed to have been replaced by the one previously fitted to Class 04 0-6-0DM shunter D2218.

The actual date the image was made is unknown; the indication given is based on the film processing date imprinted on the original slide.

Drewry Class '04' D2276 at Stratford TMD on 7th June 1970, having been withdrawn from service during August 1969, and having never received a BR TOPS number. Built at the Darlington Works of Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Ltd. in August 1959, it was to see precisely 10 years of active service with BR, working from Ashford, Norwood Junction and Brighton depots on the Southern Region, before its transfer to Stratford depot in May 1966. This wasn't quite the end of its journey at this time, for it was acquired by locomotive dealer A.R. Adams & Son and moved to their Newport premises, but only as a spares donor to keep sister contract hire loco D2244 in operation. Partially dismantled by August 1971, the remains of D2276 were eventually cut up in Newport circa 1977. Many older modellers will undoubtedly remember with affection this class of diesel shunter being the basis of a popular OO/HO scale model construction kit, "Just like the real thing!" Ref. No. R7, produced by Airfix between 1962 and 1967 and more recently revived by Dapol Kitmaster. Of interest is the 350hp shunter to the right - D3647 was built at BR Darlington Works in 1958 and was a member of the Class 10 under the TOPS scheme, but its Lister-Blackstone power unit eventually deemed it as non-standard, and all class members were early casualties. Indeed, D3647 was cut up shortly after this, in September 1970, by C. F. Booth of Rotherham.

NCB 56 formerly BR Class 10 D4068 at Whittle Colliery, Northumberland on 23rd January 1981.

D4068 was new to Darnall shed in May 1961 and was withdrawn from Immingham shed in June 1972.It was broken up at Whittle Colliery in December 1985.

Class '48DS' Ruston & Hornsby (W/No.218046 built in 1943) was supplied new to the Ministry of Supply for use at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Asfordby, Leicestershire and was allocated the MoD Army Department running number 814. It ended its military service days at Graven Hill on the Bicester Military Railway and was disposed of to the George Cohen scrapyard at Cransley near Kettering, where photographed in the company of ex-B.R. Class 10 D4093 on 1st April 1969. D4093 was supplied new from BR Darlington Works to Sheffield Darnall shed in May 1962, but was withdrawn from BR service at Immingham as early as August 1968, due to it being a non-standard class.

Shilbottle Colliery was connected to the ECML just south of Alnmouth. As with nearby Whittle Colliery, dieselisation came in the early 70s with some class 10s withdrawn from BR. Most of these were given an NCB livery and number as they got overhauled at Lambton Workshops, but the exception was D4056 which worked at Shilbottle from 1973 until about 1977 when it was sidelined and gradually cannibalised for spares, being cut up on site here in 1983 after the colliery closed. 'ROBIN' an Ex B.R. class 10, D3618 catches the light as it works the Moorgreen colliery branch, Notts, on 20th January 1984.

This was a negative at the beginningof a filmstrip as the 25% on the left was blank as the film had been exposed. The remaining 75% is of interest though. I had assumed it is Crewe depot but the issue is not around the Class 50 which is D411 but around the shunter. I had to crop the image slightly and the loco in question is D3448 definitely which was a Class 10.

According to the BR Database this loco was allocated to Toton and withdrawn on the 8th of June 1968. It was then cut up at the Steelbreaking and Dismantling Co in Chesterfield on the 1st of August 1969.

So not sure if its Crewe or not, any thoughts anyone? Thanks to Rob and Phil below identified as Toton Open Day on the 3rd of August 1968.
