Opera Class sailing boat during a race off Hoylake.
Opera Class History.
It was in 1899 that the decision was first made to adopt a new class of boat for Hoylake Sailing Club.
The gaff rigged, 16 foot clinker boats were developed from a design by Captain Winchester, a club member, and built by Alex Latta, also a club member and owner of a busy boat building yard. ‘Opera’ class racing commenced at Hoylake in June 1902.
The fleet grew quickly to 17 and has raced regularly since then. In 1909 ‘Orchid’ sailed from Hoylake to Ardrossan and on to Ballycastle in Northern Ireland. 14 boats of the ‘Opera’ class remain today in Hoylake with another ‘La Poupee’ on display in the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
The class has therefore stood the test of time although some boats have been inevitably been lost over intervening years. John Hale, Owner of ‘Country Girl’ comments “They need a great deal of care and attention but thanks to enthusiastic owners, remain in good condition.”

BREL (York) Class 508/2 (refurbished from Merseyrail 508/1) Standard Mk.II 750v dc 3rd rail 3-car emu No.508 203 (ex-508 106) freshly painted in South Eastern livery (which had actually been the new Connex South Eastern livery shortly before Connex lost their franchise) at London Bridge 11/08 on a Redhill and Tonbridge service, in the last days before this service was transferred from SE to Southern, so the newly painted livery became inappropriate for this unit almost immediately! The unit was then transferred to Merseyrail.

50020 at Exeter St Davids reversing stock into the platform for evening 19.48 Waterloo departure. Highly unusual at the time with this being a DCWA engineers loco. Hadn't see this occur before, as usually turned round with train engine. As quickly as 50020 appeared it uncoupled and headed back to stabling point. However managed to set up tripod to catch event before train engine arrived. NB departure only 8 mins away.

Class 498.1 express passenger train steam locomotives of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD), nicknamed Albatros on account of their white cab roofs, were built by Škoda Works Pilsen in a rather small batch of only 15 engines between 1952 and 1954, of which only three remain in preservation today. The 498.104 built in 1954 is nowadays a key part of the Slovak national collection. It is owned by ŽSR MDC (Museum and Documentation Centre of the Slovak Railways) and cared for by the namesake, volunteer-based Albatros Club in Bratislava. This steel beauty, given the name Rebecca, is seen here at the Bratislava Central Railway Station.
