Really, the clam chowder category was dominated by Stefano's. This is one of the "other" entries in the category. I'm trying to remember which one. There was The West Bar, from Ireland, the Highland Grille from Westerly High School, Clifton Healthcare Services (really?) and Luke's Lobster / Hurricane's Soup from Maine. I don't remember which of the above went with the Hawaiian motif and which went with the Mardi Gras decorations.
Alec is holding Chowder my new 2007 "mojave morph" male ball python. This is a co-dominant trait like the pastel and bred with my normal female half of their offspring will be "mojave morphs" and half will be "normals". Bred with my "Spider Morph" they will produce "mojave/Spiders"
a couple of weeks ago at Quilt Guild holiday potluck, a lady made this pot of shrimp chowder was to die for. I have been wanting to come up with my own. It was fabulous...my 10-year-old say "between this and ice-cream, I'll have this any day!"

I love soupy dishes, especially on a cold winter night. This time I had some leftover fish stock from when I made bouillabaisse and decided to take advantage of it. Inspired by the Manhattan clam chowder, I grabbed some clams, red snapper fillet, and shrimp, together with hearty vegetables to make this aromatic and flavorful stew. I guess it technically didn’t qualify as a chowder as it contained no cream, but was no less delicious as it was intended to be.
The GREATest seafood chowder the world has to offer. It was the kind of tomato and light cream broth with mussels, cod, etc. Deeeeelicious!
(sorry, I never measure)
1 bottle clam juice
water
1/2 onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
about 8 mini potatoes, quartered
a few scallops
parsley
1/2 can 2% evaporated milk
Old Bay
1 bay leaf
thyme
white pepper
Cook onions and celery in olive oil until softened. Add clam juice and some water (slightly less than 1 cup) and bring to a boil. Add potatoes, Old Bay, bay leaf and thyme. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove bay leaf. Add scallops and simmer for 5 minutes more, until the scallops are cooked through. Add evaporated milk. Season with white pepper and top with parsley.
Another trip to the Longhorn Steakhouse in Queens - we seem to be re-visiting a lot of our favorite places lately. This is their shrimp + lobster chowder, which was just OK for me.

Not too good a picture, alas!
