Sun & heat-dried tall grasses perform a rain dance in the slight breeze against last night's sunset.
Processed with Dynamic Photo HDR and framed with Picnik. Cheated... but this is more what it looked like through my polarized Persols. **revision** replaced with the unframed higher res version (why does Picnik do that?), which looks better large.
A couple of brief afternoon pop-up showers have fallen elsewhere around the city, and our area is in about the 7th week without rain. Everything's drying up ~ we've been under a heat advisory with record breaking temps in the low 100's the past several days (in the shade). There's a burn ban in effect and if we don't get rain this week, chances are there will also be a fireworks ban, just in time for the 4th of July. Talk about the possibility of rain on the parade...
According to my favorite weatherman, Tim Heller's blog at weatherblog.abc13.com/:
Hottest ever in June: 104° (in the shade) on June 24 (Wed.) and 26, 2009 (yesterday, when this was shot). Previous record: 103° on June 18, 1918 and June 30, 1980.
Tim says, "Only a trace of rain has fallen at Bush Intercontinenal Airport this month. And June is usually the wettest month of the year for us. We started the year with drought conditions, then excessive rainfall in April brought us back to normal. Only a third of an inch of rain fell at the airport in May. The last widespread heavy rain fell on April 27 and 28".
However, a "cool" front is in Tim's forecast and will drop our temps down to the upper '90s ~ yee haw... (currently, it's 98 with a heat index of 104 (in the shade)).
On a more exciting note, my new B+W 77 mm Kaesemann circular polarizer (along with the rest of my B&H order) should be here Monday. I can't wait to get it and try it out! But, right now, I have to get back to work... yes, I'm working on the weekend again... boo.

Yellow Legs in late afternoon
I love the looks I get from these guys when I’m wearing camo and waders. Most of the time they pay me no attention because I look like a lump of rotting cattails, but if I move a little, sometimes they’ll stare at me, look at their bird friends, then look back at me as if to say “Hey, you guys see that?”

This is one of those situations where I feel someone took too much risk for a picture. The guy in the picture, who was later ticketed for his stunt, went beyond the park barriers to get where he is. He's on solid ice, and it slopes to the gorge at Niagara Falls. I figured my next few pictures would be of him falling to his death, however he was able to somehow get back safely. I'm glad. I didn't want to see someone die.
While I was out the other day I noticed a flower tub with some lovely colour in it.
I was surprised as although our climate is mad, this looked more so than usual. Not surprising they were fake and not the first I've seen here!

Here are some photos of some Mountain Short-horned lizards seen in southern Utah at about 8300 feet in elevation earlier this month. Short-horned lizards can be found in a wide variety of habitats and in a very big elevational range. A large portion of their diets in any habitat is ants and they need habitats with open areas in order to see their prey. There are several areas in the west which used to have prime habitat but which are now infested with non-native cheat grass that fills in the open areas between native shrubs and causes bad fire cycles. Luckily in some of their highest elevation habitats cheat grass can't get a grip.
A couple of weeks back I posted a cheat shot of a Jacaranda from October last year (I did own up!) to celebrate the coming of Jacaranda season. Well today, we were back down in the same Shorncliffe area that has, like much of Brisbane right now rather spectacular examples widely spread around the suburbs. The car will soon be covered with Jacaranda confetti and gives good perspective on just how big and colourful these trees become. Add in a couple of classic Queenslander homes and the picture is complete.
