The old makes way for the new and evolution takes place, often painfully.

Behind that silver colored cast cover on the rear end are a pair of meshing spur gears that can be changed in order to alter the final drive ratio of the rear axle. Its common designation is a “quick change rear end.”

In this setup, rotational power input from the engine+transmission enters at the front of the differential housing as it does for conventional drive axles. But unlike the usual setup, the input shaft bypasses engagement with the ring gear and continues to the back where there is a small gearbox at the rear of the differential housing. That small gearbox has an access cover which is what can be seen in the photo above. Within that gearbox are the ends of two shafts - one from the input shaft and a short one above it that’s connected to the bevel pinion that engages the driving ring gear. Each of those two shafts are fitted with spur gears that mesh together to convert rotary motion from the drive shaft to the driving ring gear. Different sets of spur gears can be used in order to change the final drive ratio but they do need to be matched together in order to yield the desired mechanical ratio and to fit in the fixed distance between the two shafts.

From now on I am only going to be posting on Flickr like old times!

I have binned all social media as it’s an absolute binfire and has been for a long, long time.

So relentlessly depressing, my moto has always been ‘never give idiots a platform’ and it has done just that.

These set of photos make me smile. Big changes since 2022?! 💙

Holstebro, Denmark - April 23, 2022.

The new buildings right across from where I live, had some scratches in the windows (occurred during construction), so this was changing "almost new" to "brand new". The crane operator, Emil, was kind to let me follow his work for an hour...

Leonard and his charming wife just arrived at the river. She is a flycaster too, but said that it was too cold fer her today and so she sat on shore reading a book. Very nice people the two of them.

When trackside, one can often tell at a quick glance the heritage of the trackage they may be on, usually by looking at the signaling system. Three color traffic light style signals usually mean C&O; small, round, yellow position light signals signify the PRR; small, round and colored position light signals were the B&O. These signals gave character and originality to the railroad and set it apart from the others.

With the ever encroaching demand to make railroading safer and reduce the amount of derailments caused by human error, the addition of Positive Train Control (PTC) has all but eliminated any originality from the railroading industry. Because this new technology is not compatible with the old, the old needs to make way for the new.

The old was still putting in its working hours one beautiful October day as southbound Norfolk Southern manifest train 37Q passed through the small village of Shenandoah Junction, WV on its way to Knoxville. The new stand for the signal bridge can be seen standing in the background while the old bracket mast signals still stand, clearly showing this line's former Norfolk & Western heritage.

Waiting for a friend at Media City, these reflections caught my eye. I love the rolling feeling, like a sandy beach that leads the eye forward into the sunshine.

XP2004 and XP2012 lead WT48, the return Parkes to Sydney Elvis Express, through Medlow Bath en route to Sydney.

As of late 2023, Medlow Bath station is now undergoing a Transport Access Program (TAP) upgrade which will soon change this scene. The level crossing, which I was standing at for this shot, will be removed as part of this project and a new overpass will be constructed over the station.

Every year I find the shiny stroms are getting worse. More floods and bigger winds. I think the sea will come inland and theres no stopping it as more don't care then the ones that do care :(

I love going to the see the sea, but I don't want it in my living room :(

I think that climate change activist make people care less about climate change as the activist tell everyone off even the ones who are fighting for climate change. I know this as I know a scientist in RL = real life who has told me this.

Note : Climate change is the significant variation of average weather conditions becoming, for example, warmer, wetter, or drier—over several decades or longer. It is the longer-term trend that differentiates climate change from natural weather variability.

Ten of my fears in no particular order:

1. Changes.

2. Being abandoned.

3. Food touching on my dinner plate.

4. My body deteriorating.

5. Not arriving in the mythological land of perfection.

6. Bugs that surprise me.

7. Stories without endings.

8. Dark rooms after watching a scary film.

9. Vomiting.

10. Losing things.*

*Ironic because as I was saving this image my Photoshop crashed and I lost all of my work. Over the last year I've been working with my fears individually. After traveling abroad I definitely got a better grasp of dealing with outer forces and changes. But even if you can deal with your fears doesn't mean you're suddenly not afraid still.

This is part of a large scale collaboration with some photographers from around the world. This first challenge was themed 'Greatest Fears.' Look at all of our collab images here.

PS Happy 2013, everyone!

PPS Thanks Gabrielle Shamon for being a cheerleader when my Photoshop crashed.

I'm pleased to say that a good number of people did actually stop to give him money. Maybe there's a heart in the machine after all.

I don't really like how I edited this, but I guess it's okay.

The polaroid is from when my house was first built, which was from about fifteen years ago (I'm guessing). As you can see, most of the trees are dead, the color of the grass has changed, and a couple of trees have grown. It was interesting seeing the differences from then and now.

“My mother said I should have a 'change of scenery.' The word scenery made be think of a play. And as we were driving around, it made sense that way. Because no matter how much the scenery changed, we were still on the same stage.”

― David Levithan, Every You, Every Me

Two words a firefighter doesn't want to hear. Whether it's 3AM with a broken apparatus marooned on the highway, changing back into your frontline, or when your field mechanic says to you, "I did all I can do,you have to change over". It almost always causes heartburn with some firefighters. For me, it's just a part of life. Yesterday was our short straw day. Thousands of feet of hose, and all of the equipment must be switched to the replacement fire engine. A tedious process at best, a few hours of hard work and we're back in service.

“Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own; and from morning to night, as from the cradle to the grave, it is but a succession of changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress.”

Charles Dickens (English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian era, 1812-1870)
