„Ich ging im Walde so für mich hin …“ und mir sind Bäume mit einem pinkfarbenen Ring aufgefallen. Die werden im Winter „geerntet“, habe ich vom Revierförster am Altberg erfahren. Weil sie krank sind, oder andere Bäume behindern, oder gefährlich werden könnten für Wanderer oder sie werden wegen ihrem schönen Holz geerntet und verkauft - damit es dem Wald gut geht.

(From the photo album of my dad's Aunt Clara Huggins, 1875-1958) This is Miller Road alongside the south shore of Summit Lake, but known in the 1800s as "Tinkey's Lake," Town of Argyle, Washington County, New York, in August 1900. A woman either strips bark or marks the bark of a white elm tree on the right - something that would be pretty frowned upon today. Because of the nature of the surviving print, it's hard to make out the row boats tied up along the south shore.
