An interesting Evolution-In-Action moment courtesy of the local supermarket. BoingBoing had a brief expression-of-wonder a month ago about the wonderful fractal shapes in my own favourite vegetable, a luminescent green cauliflower called (IIRC) the romanescue cabbage. First time I saw it was in Rome. A visual delight.

Then in my local supermarket, I spotted this half-english, half-roman hybrid. Its flesh is white in colour as per the english/australian/american mass-produced norm, but half of its inflorescences have grown in the romanescue style.

This is a spontaneous hybrid between two types of plant.

Spotted in Tesco's, purchased and eaten. Yum.

Me: still not dead.

But have budded a third arm. Could be useful.

We don't need a melting pot in this country, folks. We need a salad bowl. In a salad bowl, you put in the different things. You want the vegetables - the lettuce, the cucumbers, the onions, the green peppers - to maintain their identity. You appreciate differences.

Creamy cauliflower soup with caramelized apples, grilled cod, and almond slivers.

There are carrots and runner beans in there, too.

Day 62

I saw purple cauliflower in the grocery store. I believe it's purple because it's supposed to have added vitamins, the same ones that are in red cabbage. Anyway, the look of it intrigued me so we had it for dinner. This was what was left in the casserole after cooking it. It tasted good though...if you like cauliflower.

Poway Farmers' Market - April 2012

Also known as Brassica Oleracea, this colorful crop was on display at the Old Strathcona Farmers Market. And who said cauliflower was boring?

Roasted Cauliflower

I belong to the CAULIFLOWER family except that I am alot taller and don't sit on the ground:-) I like to grow upwards to about 30cm and I'm the "pretty one" out of my veg family;-) You can make a great bouquet out of me and it will work wonders with the ladies;-)

I believe I'm Australian, unless I have brothers and sisters elsewhere in the world that I don't know about!!

The BONUS is, I not only look good but can be eaten too (but I'd rather you just admire me in a vase!!)

This is my Project365 photo DAY 22- 18th May 07

I did it. I finally got a cauliflower pizza crust to work and hold its shape. Yes, it'll never replace the chewy, gluteny sensation of real pizza dough. But hot damn, this one tastes good, is vegan, and sneaks in a bunch of vegetables. I'm taking the victory on this one.

I like cauliflowers as much as I like broccoli.
