CASTLEGATE GETS GREY TO GREEN TRANSFORMATION
The scheme links Castlegate to the under-visited ‘hidden jewel’ of Victoria Quays and has transformed the almost redundant former inner ring road from a barrier to a green corridor with sustainable drainage, floral meadows, segregated cycle lanes and public art.
Castlegate (the Street) has been closed to vehicles to create a large riverside terrace with potential to accommodate outdoor seating for existing and future cafes and bars including the former public toilet due to open as the Two Rivers Bar and the Tap and Barrel, now under new management by the Peddlers Market team. The street will also hold the newly established Sheffield Pollen Market, the first fresh flower market in Sheffield, which will take place every third Sunday of the month.
Fifty-seven new trees have been planted as part of the scheme, along with a multitude of low maintenance perennial meadow plants and bulbs which will provide a year long succession of colour and natural habitat for insects, birds and mammals.
The scheme includes four distinctive, specially designed ‘totems’ containing ‘bug hotels’ which provide places for bees and other insects to thrive, along with nature and heritage insights.
An enhanced, wide-angle view of the legendary Castle Gate rock formation in Price River Canyon. The image looks down the double-tracked main line as it crosses a steel girder bridge over the Price River, heading straight toward the towering red sandstone pillars. As a train approaches from the south, these twin cliffs create the awe-inspiring illusion of a massive, natural gateway opening into the heart of the mountains. This "enhanced postcard" highlights the rich, burnt-orange hues of the Wingate Sandstone against a crisp blue Utah sky, capturing the rugged grandeur that made this a premier stop for photographers and travelers on the "Scenic Line of the World."
History & Railroad
The Gate to the Wasatch: Castle Gate was the most iconic landmark on the Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) route through eastern Utah. For decades, passengers on trains like the California Zephyr would crowd the dome cars to watch the sheer 700-foot cliffs "open" and "close" as the train navigated the river's curves. It wasn't just a scenic wonder; it was the name of the nearby coal mining town and the site of Butch Cassidy’s famous 1897 Pleasant Valley Coal Company payroll heist.
The "Genius" of Progress: You are absolutely right to feel a bit of "railfan heartbreak" here. The formation was originally much more symmetrical and narrow, creating a true "needle's eye" for the river, the road, and the tracks. In the mid-1960s, to accommodate the widening of U.S. Route 6 and to ease a restrictive curve on the railroad that forced trains to crawl through the canyon, a significant portion of the eastern cliff (the side closest to the highway) was blasted away. While it allowed for higher speeds and safer road travel, it forever altered the "cathedral" feel of the original natural monument.

Newark on Trent, Town Centre. Corn Exchange, Newark on Trent. Built in 1847, designed by Henry Duesbury. It later became a cinema and then a bingo hall, before conversion to nightclubs. Empty for a few years, but reopened 2023 as Club X - it swiftly ran into problems with its licence, but seems to have survived, though there was little sign of this outside. Grade 2 listed.

The Castlegate in Aberdeen was chosen as the site for this Gordon Highlanders statue because this was the site of their original 1700s barracks before moving to the Bridge of Don. Bratislava Castle sits on a rocky hill in Bratislava, Slovakia overlooking the Danube River. There has been a castle on this hill since the 9th century. It was the main castle for the kingdom of Hungary from 1531 until 1783 when it became a military barracks. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1811 and remained as ruins until 1953. The castle was restored between 1953 and 1964.
