Looking up Kirkgate in Newark with Newark Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene at the far end. Taken from its junction with Castlegate.
‘Kirk’ is Old English/Norse for Church whilst the ‘Gate’ in the street names usually just meant ‘street ‘ or Road, coming from ‘Gata’. In Sweden, I lived on Ronnebygaten or Ronneby Street!
Shrewsbury Library is housed in a Grade I listed building situated on Castle Gates near Shrewsbury Castle. The site was the home of Shrewsbury School from 1550 until 1882. The buildings were handed over to the town in 1882 and a free library and museum were opened by the Corporation of Shrewsbury utilizing the building in 1885. The library was moved temporarily to Raven Meadows in 1976 while the site on Castle Gates underwent extensive restorations. The library was re-opened in 1983 by Princess Margaret.

A century ago, the Denver & Rio Grande Western utilized Castle Gate as a scenic monument to promote the natural wonders along its route. EMD GP60 No. 3156 was the last new Rio Grande painted locomotive, and I was thrilled to capture this moment in time on Kodachrome. ROGJM • 4.6.1994
ENG: The castle gate in Lübeck, built in late Gothic style in 1444, is the northern gate of the former four city gates of the Lübeck city fortifications and, along with the Holsten Gate, the only one that is still preserved today. It takes its name from the old Lübeck castle, situated high above the Trave River, which was converted into the Burgkloster in 1227. The passage was widened in 1850 and most recently in 1928, as well as expanded to four instead of three culverts.

This is the north-eastern end of the Registry Office at Newark and is the side of the building that is photographed he least but in my mind, is the most attractive side. The beauty of the walls and windows is not interrupted by doors or blocked off by bushes and trees so the Victorian architecture can be admired fully.
The building was originally the Gilstrap Public Library so was obviously designed with plenty of windows that would admit lots of light for the book loving population to read and browse by!
This building is in the Castle Gardens, Newark on Castlegate.
Came across this couple who had just got hitched, maybe for the second time around outside the registry office in Castle Gate, Newark. After lots of photos at the entrance to the office, there is a short walk along the road to the entrance to the castle where spots abound for more shots!

Only take-away food is allowed at present during the lockdowns so many places like this very popular Fish & Chips shop on Castle Gate in the middle of Newark, Nottinghamshire are doing quite well.
You don’t even have to go to get your order as they have a fleet of delivery drivers taking orders out. Just phone up and about an hour later, it is on your doorstep! Seconds before taking this shot, two separate drivers left the shop with large insulated bags full of orders!

The façade of Fairfax House onto Castlegate is of five bays with a central pediment, the door case a handsome Doric.
Fairfax House was all but a ruin before restoration by Frances Johnson for the York Civic Trust in 1982-4. In the 1920s the building was used variously as a dancehall and a foyer and cloakroom to an adjacent cinema. It is now again among the finest Georgian survivals in England begun in about 1745 and fitted out for Viscount Fairfax from 1755-62. The architect was the great John Carr of York.
