Utah Railway MK5000C No. 5005 leads a Wildcat coal train across Royal Road near Castle Gate, Utah the afternoon of May 20, 2001. In June of 2003, the unit was converted to an EMD powered MK50-3 and repainted in Genesee & Wyoming's orange & black livery.

The registry office on Castlegate, next to the castle is a listed building and was built as a free library for the general public. You can still see the intricately carved inscription above the door “Gilstrap Free Library”. It got its name from Sir Thomas Gilstrap who paid for the building about 150 yrs ago.

Well, the answer appears to be an excellent pub! This place, the ‘Just Beer’ micro pub has won many awards being Newarks pub of the year for seven years and being awarded the best pub in the East Midlands by CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale - twice!

 

It is located in an unassuming position being tucked away down an alleyway/driveway in the Swan and Salmon Yard, off Castlegate, Newark. You either know where it is or come across it by accident whilst exploring or going to one of the other small businesses down there!

Rio Grande SD40T-2 No. 5396 leads an Arco, Colorado to Moapa, Nevada coal train through Utah's Price Canyon on an overcast Aug. 17, 1996 afternoon. The D&RGW units were 'point helpers' in front of the all SD40-2 series road power.

D&RGW GP40-2 No. 3104 had the honor of leading the Rio Grande Zephyr, train No. 18 through Price Canyon at Castle Gate, Utah on May 27, 1979. One of the regular F9B units was at Burnham shops in Denver for a rebuild and repaint.

This piper was an unexpected pleasure to come across last Saturday, outside the registry Office for marriages in Castlegate, Newark! He was walking up and down the street, piping and ready to lead a happy couple away from the signing ceremony!

The church was originally opened in 1870 as the St Peters Hill Congregational Church but later became the United Reformed Church. After being disused for some years, it was sold to the Alive Church Group in 2011. Since then it has grown in popularity and is now thriving! Found on the corner of Avenue Road and Castlegate, in the centre of Grantham.

The building was built as a stables in 1871 by architect W Watkins for A Whitton a wines and spirits dealer who lived at 11 Union Road (which was demolished in 1990 to make way for the new West Gate of Lincoln Castle.

 

It was later renamed as Castle Cottage and used for residential purposes, until conversion to ground-floor retail newsagents in 1992. Later re-oopened as several resteraunts.

 

With two Rio Grande EMD SD40T-2s added as a point helper, a westbound freight climbs along the Price River at Castle Gate, Utah, on the afternoon of September 7, 1995. The helpers will be removed at Kyune and head back down to Helper, and the train will continue the climb up Soldier Summit with road power Southern Pacific EMD GP60 No. 9724, Rio Grande SD40T-2 No. 5398 and Conrail GE C40-8W No. 6212. Nos. 5355 and 5369 are covered with sand and grime, indicating a few trips up the mountain in helper service out of appropriately-named Helper.

Rio Grande SD40T-2s No. 5409, 5404, 5365, 5400, and 5405 rumble past the Cyprus Amax Willow Creek coal mine at Castle Gate, Utah the afternoon of Sept. 22, 1999. A pair of Class One railroad mergers appear to have skipped this hallowed ground.

A trio of new AC4400CW locomotives work a Utah Railway coal train at Cyprus Plateau’s Willow Creek loading facility at Castle Gate, Utah on Oct. 11, 1999. The train will be delivered to the Reid Gardner Generating Station in Moapa, Nevada the following day. Tragedy struck Willow Creek when a fire and explosion hit more than 2000 feet below the mine’s portal on Aug. 1, 2000. The explosion injured eight, and took the lives of two miners. The last shipment of Willow Creek coal was in September of that same year. (Info from The Deseret News and UtahRails.net)

This is what it looks like today. In Castlegate in Penrith, there are lots of buildings like this.

 

"'10 T Marrs Penrith' refers to a ghost sign in Penrith, Cumbria, advertising a former grocery and confectionery shop run by Thomas Marrs, and later his son, Fred, from the late 1870s until 1948. The '10' likely relates to the shop's original or current address, but the most significant aspect is the preserved sign itself..."

This is an upward look at the spire above the old Tolbooth in Aberdeen. the Tolbooth is the old jail and is part of the Town House buildings near the Castlegate in Aberdeen. I like the details of this spire, the weather vane and the clock works.

The timbered building is part of the reputed haunted Black Swan Hotel. This hotel is actually made up of three buildings — a black and white timber house, a Georgian house and an Elizabethan home — and has a history dating back more than 500 years. So it's unsurprising there's a few resident spooks too (Hauntedrooms .co)

 

The central building was a bank but like many branches it is closed now.

 

Helmsley is a market town and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town is located at the point where Rye Dale leaves the moorland and joins the flat Vale of Pickering. (wiki)

Early on a cloudy morning, UP's Helper to Salt Lake manifest climbs through the lower reaches of the Price River Canyon at Castle Gate. With just 13 empties today, this trio of GEs isn't facing too much trouble in climbing the 2.4% grade to Soldier Summit.

The inside of this antiques shop is vast, stretching to three floors and also has, surprisingly a vegan cafe inside! Don’t ask me why it is called ‘Grain@no1’ because I will not be able to answer! It is at No1 Castlegate but the lady who runs it has the surname of Taylor.

 

The window on street level gives you just an initial view of the sort of things you will find inside - a real mixture of old, very old and some not so old goods - just very mixed up.
