Grantham, St Wulfram's Church. The annual Christmas Tree Festival and ice rink in November 2022. The church is a grade 1 listed building, restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott 1866/7. It dates from the medieval period. It has a wealth of detail in the carvings. In addition to the church services, it serves as a community hub, featuring many secular events and functions throughout the year.

The gate of Eyal Castle, not much left of the castle. Etal Castle is a ruined medieval fortification in the village of Etal, Northumberland, England. It was located alongside the River Till. It was built around 1341 by Robert Manners, and comprised a residential tower, a gatehouse and a corner tower, protected by a curtain wall. The castle was involved both in local feuding and the border wars between England and Scotland. There was a battle between the rival Manners and Heron families outside the walls in 1428, and in 1513 it was briefly captured by King James IV of Scotland during his invasion of England.
around the end of the 15th century when the Manners moved closer to the royal court. Since this time the Manners family have occupied Belvoir Castle, as Dukes of Rutland
The castle passed into the hands of the Crown in 1547 and was garrisoned as part of the border defences, but fell into disrepair and was abandoned as a military fortification after 1603. In the 18th century it ceased to be used as a domestic dwelling and became ruinous.

This is the Castlegate Fountain, known locally as The Mannie in shadow semi-silhouetted against the Citadel bathed in late afternoon sunshine.
The Mannie is one of the few examples of leaden sculpture in the city. In 1706 work began on laying lead water pipes from Carden's Well to a new fountain in the Castlegate, to bring new supplies of drinking water to the growing population.

CASTLEGATE GETS GREY TO GREEN TRANSFORMATION
The scheme links Castlegate to the under-visited ‘hidden jewel’ of Victoria Quays and has transformed the almost redundant former inner ring road from a barrier to a green corridor with sustainable drainage, floral meadows, segregated cycle lanes and public art.
Castlegate (the Street) has been closed to vehicles to create a large riverside terrace with potential to accommodate outdoor seating for existing and future cafes and bars including the former public toilet due to open as the Two Rivers Bar and the Tap and Barrel, now under new management by the Peddlers Market team. The street will also hold the newly established Sheffield Pollen Market, the first fresh flower market in Sheffield, which will take place every third Sunday of the month.
Fifty-seven new trees have been planted as part of the scheme, along with a multitude of low maintenance perennial meadow plants and bulbs which will provide a year long succession of colour and natural habitat for insects, birds and mammals.
The scheme includes four distinctive, specially designed ‘totems’ containing ‘bug hotels’ which provide places for bees and other insects to thrive, along with nature and heritage insights.

The Castlegate in Aberdeen was chosen as the site for this beautiful Gordon Highlanders statue because this was the site of their original 1700s barracks before moving to the Bridge of Don. Castlegate Barracks was located at the end of Union Street and Castle Street, affording views over the harbour. It was created by sculptor Mark Richards.
While today the area houses the city's iconic Mercat Cross alongside the war memorial to the north-east's Gordon Highlanders regiment, one thing the Castlegate does not feature is a castle. Aberdeen's Castlegate may be an iconic area of the Granite City, yet it remains an area filled with mystery - namely, where is Castlegate's castle? While today the area houses the city's iconic Mercat Cross alongside the war memorial to the north-east's Gordon Highlanders regiment, one thing it certainly does not feature is a castle. In fact, while it has a wealth of impressive granite cathedrals and townhouses, Aberdeen has nothing resembling the ancient fortresses of medieval Scotland. Which, from a visitor's perspective, should make the naming of Castlegate - formerly known as Castle Hill - somewhat bizarre. Firstly a castle did exist at one time in the north-east of Scotland and it was built right in the middle of Aberdeen's Castlegate where, if records are to be believed, the Salvation Army's Aberdeen Citadel currently stands. Aberdeen Castle was first mentioned in 1264; it is thought to have been destroyed shortly after 1308, and its history, although brief, is incredibly bloody. www.aberdeenlive.news/news/history/aberdeen-castle-myster...
The view across the city from Clifford's Tower, the most prominent surviving part of the royal castle of York. On the horizon are York Minster and the tower of the Roman Catholic Church of St Wilfrid. The lantern of All Saints Church, pavement partially obscures the Minster as does the spire of St Mary's church, Castlegate. In the right foreground is Fairfax House, a town house of 1754-55 with a more modest 19th century house next to it. The late 20th century Hilton Hotel is in the foreground, with a glimpse of the roofs of Castlegate House just visible over the roof. The Copppergate Centre lies behind Fairfax house, justly famous for housing the Jorvik Viking Centre which marks the site of the heart of Viking Age York.
Castle Gate Cemetery for Castle Gate Ghost town infamous for the horrific mine disaster of 1924.
The Castle Gate mine disaster occurred on March 8, 1924, in a coal mine near the town of Castle Gate, Utah (now dismantled), All of the 171 men working in the mine were killed in the series of three violent explosions. One worker, the leader of the rescue crew, died from carbon monoxide inhalation while attempting to reach the victims shortly after the explosion.
To add to the tragedy, two weeks prior to the explosion, the Utah Fuel Company had laid off many of the unmarried miners and miners without dependents during a period of reduced orders for coal. As a result, 114 of the men who were killed in the disaster were married men, leaving behind 415 widows and fatherless children.
Newark-on-Trent's Corn Exchange in grand Italian Baroque style is by Henry Duesbury. It was opened on 27th September 1848 and was not only used as a corn market, held every Wednesday, but also for lectures, exhibitions and musical entertainments. It continued to be used for trade by the local farmers, millers and maltsters until 1978. The building's most recent use was to house a night club. Sadly, the present 'To Let' sign looks ominous on such a grand Grade II Listed Building which sits prominently on Castlegate. It appeared on a list of 'Forgotten Buildings of Britain' produced by The Guardian newspaper recently:- www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2018/jun/09/forg...

Standing at a 'tractor stop' waiting ages and ages for one to arrive (as you do!)....only to find that one hundred and two arrive all at once 😍 😍
This is a fund raising event, and the tractors travel in convoy on the lanes around Foolow, Bretton, Eyam, Castleton etc.... stopping along the way at various farms for refreshments and finishing at the pub in Foolow - looked like a lot of fun - and made me want to have a go at driving a tractor myself!!
On Explore May 25th, 2017 currently placed #65 many thanks for all interest.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA a break in the weather for a hour or so allowed me to pop down to the castle and take a few test shots with the E-620 and my 3 lenses for it quite pleased with the results
This is a great charity second hand bookshop run by the Voluntary Services Agency in Aberdeen. It is open most days between 10am until 12noon and then in the afternoon 1pm until 3pm. It is located on the Castlegate in Aberdeen and is well worth a visit for any book lovers.

I liked the light in this image as it picks out the green on the cliff tops and in places the beaches in the bays.

One of the oldest parts of the City of Aberdeen is the Castlegate and it looked good in the February sunshine. I like the old cobbled pavement here and not so long ago the trams used to come and turn at the Castlegate. In olden days and still sometimes now there is a market in the Castlegate, it was the market place since the 12th century. Today it retains that sense of history and on a day like this it is possible to sit outside as long as you are in the sun.
