Newark on Trent, Town Centre. Corn Exchange, Newark on Trent. Built in 1847, designed by Henry Duesbury. It later became a cinema and then a bingo hall, before conversion to nightclubs. Empty for a few years, but reopened 2023 as Club X - it swiftly ran into problems with its licence, but seems to have survived, though there was little sign of this outside. Grade 2 listed.

CASTLEGATE GETS GREY TO GREEN TRANSFORMATION

The scheme links Castlegate to the under-visited ‘hidden jewel’ of Victoria Quays and has transformed the almost redundant former inner ring road from a barrier to a green corridor with sustainable drainage, floral meadows, segregated cycle lanes and public art.

Castlegate (the Street) has been closed to vehicles to create a large riverside terrace with potential to accommodate outdoor seating for existing and future cafes and bars including the former public toilet due to open as the Two Rivers Bar and the Tap and Barrel, now under new management by the Peddlers Market team. The street will also hold the newly established Sheffield Pollen Market, the first fresh flower market in Sheffield, which will take place every third Sunday of the month.

Fifty-seven new trees have been planted as part of the scheme, along with a multitude of low maintenance perennial meadow plants and bulbs which will provide a year long succession of colour and natural habitat for insects, birds and mammals.

The scheme includes four distinctive, specially designed ‘totems’ containing ‘bug hotels’ which provide places for bees and other insects to thrive, along with nature and heritage insights.

A view down Main St., Cockermouth from Castlegate shows a Gardner powered Bristol LD of Cumberland Motor Services on its way to Keswick via Braithwaite on service 34.

The trip would have originated at Whitehaven and arrived at this point by way of Workington.

The vehicle itself, ORM141, was new to CMS in March 1955 as No.359. It was one of a batch of 5 (ORM140-4) allocated to country services and its 60 seat ECW body was fitted with platform doors.

In November 1961 it was renumbered to C406 and this picture post-dates that change.

Prior to the building of the A66, using the majority of the track-bed of the former Cockermouth, Keswick & Penrith Railway, this section of road would have been the main through route for all traffic between the Lakes & West Cumbria.

Although not serving Whitehaven the current X5 Limited-Stop service shadows the majority of the now defunct 34 route.

Bar the LD and the van exiting Market Place precious little has changed from this scene today.

The road at Monsal Head (Little Longstone) in the Peak District.

Aberdeen 320 (VRS 320) a 1964 Daimler CVG6 / Alexander H37/29R and 270 (LRG 270) a 1958 Daimler CVG6 / Metro-Cammell H37/29R, seen laying over at the Castlegate, Aberdeen on 29 September 1968.

320 was one of a batch of eight such buses delivered in 1964, 317 – 324 (VRS 317 etc). It was rebuilt to forward entrance layout re-entering service by March 1971. Six others of the batch were similarly converted between June 1968 and May 1972, leaving 317 as the only one of the batch with a rear entrance. 320 was withdrawn in 1981 and sold for scrap.

270 was a one-off delivered in 1958. It was the first Aberdeen bus to feature the attractive Manchester style glass fibre front end. It had chassis number 19517. Interestingly, Dundee's HTS 271 - 280 followed on (but not in chassis number order - as you would expect for Dundee) and their 272 was chassis number 19518. Maybe the fact that 270 and Dundee's 271 - 280 were built at the same time is the reason why some folk suggested that Aberdeen's bus was a cancelled Dundee order. That was not the case.

The Transport Committee meeting minutes of October 1957 include the following item - "Upon a report by the General Manager, the committee resolved to recommend that he be authorised to purchase from the Transport Vehicles (Daimler) Company Limited, Coventry, a Daimler/Gardner chassis of the monocontrol type at a total cost of £2,613, and to have constructed on such chassis a lightweight bus body by the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage & Wagon Company Limited, Birmingham at a cost of £2,470". Note the erroneous use of "monocontrol" (AEC’s description of it’s transmission, which featured from bus 250 (KRS 250) and all subsequent AEC Regent Vs),. instead of "Diamatic".

270 was involved in a very serious accident with a fire engine on Midstocket Road on 27 September 1959, repairs taking many months to complete. Upon its return to service 270 seemed to sit high on the front axle and the lower front panel below the windscreen was obviously non-standard.

In this view the fleet number of 270 is almost illegible. It was of the smaller gold style introduced in early 1968. These were described as "difficult to see in the dark" during a meeting on 8 December 1968 between (inspector) staff and ACT management. It was probably soon after that they were over-painted cream or green (depending upon if they were on a green or cream background) prior to obtaining a supply of new cream and green transfers.

Withdrawn from service in 1972, 270 became a driver tuition vehicle because it was found to have a cracked offside longitudinal chassis frame (possibly a legacy from the accident with the fire engine, which might have created a stress fracture in later years). It would have been a costly repair for a bus getting on in life so it became a driver tuition bus number 92. It was finally withdrawn around late 1980 passing to a scrap dealer in June 1981.

The Castlegate in Aberdeen was chosen as the site for this Gordon Highlanders statue because this was the site of their original 1700s barracks before moving to the Bridge of Don. Castlegate Barracks was located at the end of Union Street and Castle Street, affording views over the harbour. Sculptor: Mark Richards

I took this picture on my way to the football match on Saturday. What you see is The Salvation Army Citadel built to the design of James Souttar, 1896 and the Mercat Cross dates from 1686, designed by John Montgomery. This is a very historic part of Aberdeen, now a pedestrian area, it has a few shops and restaurants. Not so very long ago buses and before that the trams would come down here and turn, and there was a thriving market here, most weeks. Today it is still quite a gathering spot and when the sun is out a nice place to have a seat and watch the world go by.

The blood is Jesus’ blood from his death on the cross. The fire is a symbol of God’s Holy Spirit which is given to Christians to help and guide them.
