That said, I think that living in a popular tourist destination, and with the occasional tourists who have no concept of where they are not supposed to go, signs like these are inevitable, and understandable. This is why I am not geotagging this picture.

I revisited this one just a couple of weeks after posting it. There was very little detail in the highlights. I like this version better.

I like the way this one turned out. There’s something about using film that I find deepy satisfying. It’s the anticipation, the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat, as it were, that keeps me firing those old shutters. “You never know what’s in pickle barrel until you get the lid off’n it,” a wise dog in a Warner Bros cartoon once said. He was right. It’s like Schroedeners film holder.: Until its developed, it’s both good and bad.

Winter Sunset at Beards Hollow, Cape Disappointment State Park, Washington, 2019 by Steve G. Bisig

When the opportunity for a potential beautiful sunset image coincides with my days off from work, I do my best to make it out to the coast. On this January day, all the weather forecast models promised a colorful sunset in the area of Cape Disappointment State Park (located along the southwest tip of Washington State near Illwaco).

It was nearly high tide as I drove my Jeep down the beach, and after crossing several small streams, I drove as far south as I could go until I reached Beards Hollow. I had the entire beach to myself nearly an hour before sunset.

As the sun was setting, it beautifully illuminated the clouds from below as well as the the incoming waters of the high tide. With such stark contrast, the trees and cliffs of North Head were silhouetted against the sunset skies. Indeed, it was a very beautiful and peaceful winter night at the beach.

I can see Oregon and Washington's dry side from here. The trees gradually diminish, and what is left after The Dalles is mostly grasses and rolling hills intermixed with rugged cliffs.

Along the Toothrock Trail, Columbia Gorge, October 2022 by Gary L. Quay

I accidentally exposed this film like it was Rollei RPX 25, so I wasn't sure how it would work out, but it seems to be just fine.

This is along the Toothrock Trail, which is part of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail, near the Bonneville Dam. This section of the old road was bypassed in favor of a tunnel in the 1930's, and was left to go back to nature until the state brought it back to life as part of a hiking/biking trail that will go from Troutdale to The Dalles. Parts of it that were kept as roads when the old highway was vivisected to build I-84 in the 1960's are still open for cars. This section was one that was almost destroyed. There is a portion of the 1856 old portage road that went around Cascade Locks that still exists near this spot, but it was closed off after the Eagle Creek Fire in 2017. I tried to access it the day I took this picture, but the path was choked with weeds. I hope it can be saved.

The burn marks you see on the trees are leftover from the 2017 fire.

Pandemic Apocalypse Photo Expedition into the neighborhood. I did this because I can’t go anywhere else. Seeing the world through a narrower field of vision can be kind of like writing a sonnet. Poets say (I have called myself a poet in the past, but I haven’t written many since college) that the rigid structure of a sonnet can bring out greater creativity because it forces one to think in different ways. I used the limits of the field of vision of the lens to edit out the houses on either side, to make it look like it’s not in suburbia.

Looking Down on Wishram, Washington by Gary L. Quay

Pictures like this tend to lend themselves to black and white. This was a fairly low contrast scene with a bright spot in the cloud cover. Turning it black and white, and playing with the levels and contrast gave it a lot more punch than would be available in a color image. Darkening the sky presented some issues with dust that was on the sensor when I took this picture. I have since gotten it cleaned, but there was a lot of it, and getting rid of it left the sky splotchy. I invented a process to evening it out, which involves selecting areas of similat tone, and applying a gaussian blur, re-adding noise, and desaturating. It worked pretty well. I’m sure that other people have done this before, but it is new to me.

I took this picture at The Gorge White House a couple years ago. Located in the Hood River Valley, you can see the transition from the wet west to the dry east in the trees on the hills on either side. The Gorge White House is surrounded by fruit orchards, and vinyards, some of which they own. Like all of the eastern Columbia Gorge wineries, they make very good wine.

Union Street Railroad Bridge, Salem, Oregon, July 2023 by Gary L. Quay

The Union Street Railroad Bridge in Salem, Oregon is now part of a hiking path. I hiked it on July 4th, and had the new Fuji GSW690III in tow. I used Rollei Retro 80S film, and again had to do a difficult cleanup in Photoshop before I could present the picture. I have been trying to use up the Rollei film I bought, but I am beginning to think I should just throw it away. None of the pictures I have taken with it are printable in the darkrrom due to defects in the film emulsion.

Parkdale was one of my go to places when I lived in the Columbia Gorge. Its proximity to Mt Hood was a plus, and there are a few good restaurants in town. Apple Valley BBQ is one. Blue Canoe was another, but it didn't make it through the pandemic, which is too bad because their corned beef hash was to die for. Hopefully, the owners can make a go of it somewhere else, or maybe even reopen there.

I decided that this picture needed to be black and white because I could take liberties with the tonal range of the clouds. I think it worked.

My yearly autumn pilgrimage to the Cedar Creek Grist Mill ended successfully despite a rocky start. The rocky start was a miscalculation on the metering that cost me half of the roll of film. This one, however, turned out pretty good.

Oneonta Tunnel, HCRH, Columbia Gorge, Oregon by Gary L. Quay

I have begun hiking regularly in the Columbia Gorge after years of sporatic treks. I hiked to Bridal Veil Falls this morning, stopped at Oneonta while I was in the vicinity, and developed the film when I got home. It was a film-only trek. I did not take the digital camera along, so I was left with my old method of handheld meters. I exposed this at 2 seconds at F16. I could have done 1 second, and it would have been better, or used a compensating developer. I have also been thinking about using pre-exposure for images like this. The contrast range was at the limits of what the film is capable of, and pre-exposure compresses the light values, making the negative easier to print. As it stands now, the highlights are a little washed out. Maybe I can print through that in the darkroom.

I took this doring one of my many commutes through the Columbia Gorge. I have to say that while I am much closer to work now, I miss the constant photographic opportunities that I was gifted by living in Hood River. It was a trade off. Not, my cameras are much lonelier, but I’m saving a couple hours per day, and using less fossil fuels.
