This is the marina at Cascade Locks in the Columbia Gorge, Oregon. I was trying to catch an intense sunrise, but I was on a highway with no place to pull of that still had a decent foreground. I didn’t want to just take a picture of the highway with some colorful clouds. I pulled into Cascade Locks, and remembered that there is a marina at the east end of town, and I headed there. I arrived ust before the clouds went dark, but I got two pictures before that happened. Just a few minutes before, all of the clouds were a brillient magenta.

I photographed this freestanding fireplace back in the early 2000's, and was not very pleased with the results. I had a habit then of putting the subject smack dab in the the middle of the picture. I've learned a few things over the years, so I gave it a better treatment this time.
This fireplace is all that is left of a lodge that sat next to the Sandy River across from Dodge Park. The spray can crowd have obviously found it, unfortunately, but I took the picture anyway.

The ochre stuff on the building appears to be some kind of mold or lichen. I'm not sure which. Since it's wood, I doubt it's rust. Anyway, I like the composition.

This is The Dalles, Oregon, as seen from Washington across the Columbia River.. The days are getting warmer, and infrared is working better. I’ve moved away from using autofocus lenses for infrared. My old, manual lenses work much better because they have infrared marks on them, and I can focus where I want.

We had a “King Tide” along the Oregon coast last weekend. Gaia and I were in Depoe Bay to catch the action at the Spouting Horn. Some of the bigger spouts gave us a rainbow. My camera got bathed in seawater a couple of times, but it survived intact.

I wanted to see what would happen if I put a R72 filter in front of my Nikon D810, and took some pictures. The R72 lets in only infrared light above 720nm. it seems to require 12 stops of additional light. Exposures were about 30 seconds. Only one actually worked, which is this one. There was a little flare on the filter because I did not have a lens hood along, and it made them unusable. For this one, I found a shade tree under which to take the picture. I think it worked just fine.

This is a re-edit of the previous picture. Yesterday, I updated Adobe Photoshop on my laptop, which removed all prior versions. Photoshop 2025 does not play well with my venerable (free) copy of the Nik Collection, so I had to learn to make the adjustments, especially the Graduated Split Neutral Density filter, using only Photoshop. The process is difficult and frustrating. I spent at least an hour making the sky a little darker. This morning, I figured out that I could open Photoshop from the Creative Cloud app using "Open in Rosetta". This gives me my Nik Collection back.
So, I re-edited the picture this morning using Nik, and used the filters Pro Contrast, Graduated ND Filter, and Brillience/Warmth. The total time was 3 minutes, and the picture looks better, and much more balanced. The highlights in the clouds are still blown out, but that was an exposure problem.
I don't normally post the same picture twice in a row, but I felt that it was necessary to show the difference rather tnan simply replacing the picture like I normally do.

I took a trip to the Oregon Coast for my "Places of Doom" project. I was there to get pictures of a little body of water called Dope Creek, which turned out to be nigh impossible. Boiler Bay almost qualifies as a Place of Doom because of the way it got its name. A ship ran aground and exploded in 1910, and all that remains is the boiler, which can be seen at very low tides. I did manage to photograph Dope Creek at a distance, and got some Lensbaby pictures of the "Devil's Punchbowl", which is on the list of Places of Doom, but the feature - a sea cave where the roof fell in - is not very picturesque. I hoped that the Lansbaby Edge 35 would bring it to life.
I'm mostly happy with the developement of this one, but there was a light leak in the lower left corner, which I cleaned up in Photoshop. I will have to test that film holder.

'Twas a dark and stormy day...
I didn't quite manage to keep the rain and the spray from the falls off of my lens, but this one didn't have too many splatters on the lens.
I'm really trying hard to not let my photography go dormant in the winter. It's tough to do when it's raining and cold, but I got out there, and took some pictures despite the weather.

It was an interesting day for clouds. To the west was an "atmospheric river". To the east was sunbreaks flashing across the sky, sometimes illuminating the landscape on full or partial light. It was a good display of the rain shadow effect caused by the Cascade Mountains. It was a much better day to be in the semi arid east side of Oregon and Washington than in the drenched west.
This is a panorama made of two images. The 100mm Zeiss is perfect for this because it has no distortion.

The film holder I used has a light leak. I lost a little of the negative, and it will never be printable in the darkroom, but the my first attempt at stand development in 8 years was a success. The scene was dark, and I had to compensate for reciprocity. Rather than cutting development time, I used stand development with Rodinal 1:100. Iw ould be a very usable negative if it weren't for the light leak.

I was given an early Christmas Gift by Glen Bledsoe today, and I tested it out in downtown Troutdale, zOregon this evening. The lens is a Lensbaby Double Glass, and the look is very unique. There is a sharp center surrounded by stretched bokeh.

This is the Zigzag River near Rhododendron, Oregon. I am taking a hatis from my explorations of the Columbia Gorge to focus on the Mt. Hood area. Gaia and I were out at Draper Girls Farm in Parkdale, Oregon on the day that smoke from the Eagle Creek Fire filled the air all through the Columbia Gorge. It was at the start of a harrowing few months. One thing that I noticed, however, was that the smoke created a warming effect when mixed with sunlight. I took many pictures in the Draper Girls flower garden that day, trying to forget that the Columbia Gorge was burning. I lived in Hood River at the time, which is along the Columbia River about 25 miles from where the fire started. This may seem like a good distance, but it hadn’t rained for a while, the wind was fanning the flames.

This is Oregon and Washington's Rain Shadow effect demonstrated. The light on the water shows the sun breaking through the clouds over Hood River a few miles downstream while a wall of water loomed over the western gorge. I took the picture from an overlook near Mosier, Oregon.

I was out with Glen Bledsoe and Christopher Taylor on Saturday to do some panoramas at the Baskett Slough near Salem, Oregon. It was a bit hot, and I was a bit dry, but a good time was had by all. I took a few digital pictures while I was there too.

The Columbia River is downright lazy as it runs past The Dalles, Oregon. This was not always the case. Prior to the Bonneville Dam, just upriver from this area was a water-churning, boulder infested, smash-your-boat-to-pieces navigation hazard called the "Three Mile Rapids." Other natural, doom invoking geological nightmares were the Long Narrows, and the Short Narrows (also known as Fivemile Rapids, and Tenmile Rapids) where the mighty Columbia essentially flipped on its side, with all of the fluid dynamics that it entails. Also just up river is Celilo Falls, which is now buried beneath the waters held back by The Dalles Dam.
I am a big fan of The Dalles, and Wasco County, Oregon in general. I miss living nearby.

I took this with the Twirly Camera before I got it repaired. I like the picture, especially the way the picture is bent around a center axis. It isn’t suitable for selling due to the shuttering of the turret as the lens turned. The camera, however, is repaired, and so I hope to make more images like this one.
