Gaia and I were out at Draper Girls Farm in Parkdale, Oregon on the day that smoke from the Eagle Creek Fire filled the air all through the Columbia Gorge. It was at the start of a harrowing few months. One thing that I noticed, however, was that the smoke created a warming effect when mixed with sunlight. I took many pictures in the Draper Girls flower garden that day, trying to forget that the Columbia Gorge was burning. I lived in Hood River at the time, which is along the Columbia River about 25 miles from where the fire started. This may seem like a good distance, but it hadn’t rained for a while, the wind was fanning the flames.

The Columbia River is downright lazy as it runs past The Dalles, Oregon. This was not always the case. Prior to the Bonneville Dam, just upriver from this area was a water-churning, boulder infested, smash-your-boat-to-pieces navigation hazard called the "Three Mile Rapids." Other natural, doom invoking geological nightmares were the Long Narrows, and the Short Narrows (also known as Fivemile Rapids, and Tenmile Rapids) where the mighty Columbia essentially flipped on its side, with all of the fluid dynamics that it entails. Also just up river is Celilo Falls, which is now buried beneath the waters held back by The Dalles Dam.
I am a big fan of The Dalles, and Wasco County, Oregon in general. I miss living nearby.

I took this with the Twirly Camera before I got it repaired. I like the picture, especially the way the picture is bent around a center axis. It isn’t suitable for selling due to the shuttering of the turret as the lens turned. The camera, however, is repaired, and so I hope to make more images like this one.

Located at Cape Perpetua Thor's Well is a bowl-shaped hole that is the result of a collapsed sea cave. At high tide, the bowl fills up and sprays sea water everywhere- and then the sea sucks it all back down and out into the ocean again. As you can see, the surf was pretty high, so I did not get too close to the opening.

I took this one early on in my digital escapades. I was getting used to the new format, and was learning what it could do. One of the things that I notice now that I have a D810 is that the colors on from the D300 are a little blocky. They sometmes need a little kick up in the luminiscence from the raw fiter. The D300 is 12 years old now, and converted to infrared, but it’s where I started in digital when I bought it in 2015.

This is from a few years ago. In the summer of 2016, Gaia and I went out to the Dalles Mountain Ranch to catch a glimpse of the Old West before in completely vanishes into the soil. I like this old wagon, but with cement blocks under the wheels, it will never make a great picture, so that gives me the freedom to play with it a little. I added some Orton Effect for, well… effect.

On the way to Parkdale, Oregon, the road crosses over the East Fork of the Hood River, which carries water from the glaciers of Mount Hood, and gives the town of Hood River its name. I have taken pictures here before, but the sheer number of power lines that pass over this spot makes the cleanup a bit daunting. Isn’t Photoshop amazing? I removed 15 power lines. Was it worth the time? I think so.

This was my first attempt at landscape photography since the shelter in place order was given due to the pandemic. Truth be told, I’m going a little nuts being cooped up in the house all of the time, but it’s better than catching the virus. Luckily, we don’t have to go very far to take pictures here.
Due to the location of the sun, this was a tricky picture to get without flare. I used a polarizer, and a 3 stop split neutral density filter, and was unable to use a lens hood. The angle of the sun, and the new spring foliage add to the rather extreme greens in the picture. I may tone them down at some point. I may not.

These are the Rowena Loops on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The road was built that way because the chief engineer on the project planted his feet on the idea that no grade would be more than 5%. I decided to work on a picture I posted about 9 years ago, back when I had a functioning darkroom. I usually replace the originals on Flickr, rather than posting new versions, but the original was a scan of the print, and this is of the negative, and I wanted to leave both up for posterity.
This was taken with my 760mm SK Grimes lens fitted with a red # 25 filter on 8x10 Ilford FP4+.
Since I had two negs to process, I tried two different methods to get the sky to print easily next to the shaded foreground. The first method was to try divided D23: 4 minutes in the developer and 3 minutes in the alkalie bath. The negative came out splotchy, and completely unusable. Since one was ruined, I had to try something more fool-proof. I used Kodak HC110 and semi-stand development. This seems to largely have done the trick. The sky requires a little burning in, but not much.
Camera: Deardorff 8x10.
Lens: 760mm SK Grimes with red # 25 filter.

I took this picture as part of my Night Shift series, which ran from 2007 through 20011. All of the pictures were made with large format film cameras (preferably 8x10), and all while I worked the graveyard shift.
This is my favorite spot to take pictures on the Eastside waterfront. I especially like it on the wee hours of the morning when the water has flown undisturbed for hours, and lays below Portland like a mirror. This image was taken at around 4:00 AM. Tired yet?
Color films can shift red during long exposures. I sometimes let the red stay.

I call that little pimple of a hill out there “The Little Butte that Could.” I don’t know why I call it that, but I do.
I posted a film version of this a few years ago.

This is at the turnoff to the Cedar Greek Grist Mill near Woodland, Washington. I wanted to see how it would look in infrared. Not bad, I guess.
Camera: Nikon D300
Lens: Vintage 20mm Nikkor.

I turned the camera around at Crown point last week. I’m trying to get more pictures of the old highway at various places, and in various season.

I hiked up to Dry Creek falls on the Pacific Crest Trail for the first time, and had the Flexbody with. I had the falls to myself for about 10 minutes, and used it to my advantage.
Camera: Hasselblad Flexbody
Lens: 50mm Zeiss Distagon
Film: Ilford Pan F 50 developed in PMK Pyro.

One does not come upon a pile of rocks, and think "I'd like to take a picture of that." But in this case, I did just that.
This is a film version of a picture I posted last month. There is something very satisfying about having a film image work out this well.
View this on a computer monitor. It won't look nearly as good on a phone.
Camera: Hasselblad 500CM
Lens: 50mm Zeiss Distagon
Film: Kodak E100
