It was stormy day on the Washington Coast. The King Tide was receding, and the storm clouds were looming. Gaia and I made it to the lighthouse, and back to the car just as the rain came pounding, and didn’t let up. We got lucky.

I saw these ships out on the river as I was leaving to go home. I stopped, and took some pictures, and two young women strolled up and asked about what the pylons were there for. I explained that they are the remains of canneries that used to line the river at Astoria. Then they asked about my photography. They seemed very pleasant to talk to, and showed a genuine interest in what I was doing. As they were about to continue on their way, one of them said, "Oh, and that's a nice sunset."
I turned to the west to see the beginnings of what turned out to be a spectacular sunset. The rest is history. I posted the sunset shot earlier.

I have tried many times to get a good picture with the Spouting Horns at Depoe Bay. The Spouting Horns are holes in the rocky shoreline that lead to a short tunnel that opens to the ocean. At high tide, the waves build until a bigger one comes along, and hits that tunnel with force, and then water spouts from the holes. The sun happened to be at the right place to form a rainbow when I took this.

We finally went out to parts unknown after almost 3 months of pandemic lockdown. Parts of Oregon are opening, and it was important to spend some money helping out some struggling businesses. So, while we were at it, I got the camera out a few times.
The wind was howling, so it was difficult to get the wheat to sit still for the camera. I should have had the shutter speed higher, but it still looks good.

Gaia and I were out at the coast on Sunday to see if we could catch a sunset. We did. I haven't done many sunsets or sunrises lately. The pandemic has taken much of the wind out of my sails when it comes to being out in public. Way too many people still aren't paying attention to the guidelines, and it's dangerous for Gaia to be around people like that, even outdoors. So, everyone, please enable everyone, including folks with depressed immune systems, to enjoy the outdoors by masking up when near anyone not in your immediate household, and keep your distance. People can be infected when oudoors. To those of you who mask up, and follow the state's guidelines: Thank you very much. Your effors are much appreciated.

This is The Dalles, Oregon, as seen from Washington across the Columbia River.. The days are getting warmer, and infrared is working better. I’ve moved away from using autofocus lenses for infrared. My old, manual lenses work much better because they have infrared marks on them, and I can focus where I want.

One of my favorite places: Horsethief Butte, Washington in the Eastern Columbia Gorge.
I have been going back and forth on whether to use a watermark on my photographs. I have changed it a couple of times, and removed it completely a couple of times. I seem to always come back to the one I used on this one. If someone is going to steal my picture, I want them to at least have to do some work to remove the watermark before displaying it.

A cold wind was blowing, and our coats didn’t do much good. Nevertheless, we braved the elements to get about 20 minutes of one of the best sunsets I’ve caught with a camera.
This was a really difficult edit, but I’m learning hw to do it. It is not HDR. Bringing the values of the foreground, which was all silhouette, up to where detail could be seen, while not losing the intensity of the sunset took some doing. My main concern was that it didn’t look fake.

I had the Lensbabies out for an afternoon on the town in Hood River today. I was looking for interesting compositions while we stopped at one of the downtown shops, and then got something to eat in the Heights. The downtown restaurants were mostly closed. I thought that it may have been due to the pandemic, but I found out later that there was a gas outage the affected a major portion of town. I didn't spend a lot of time out with the camera, so I only got this one image in town. I got a few more near Rowena later on.

The western forests around Mt Hood are some of the mossiest , ferniest places in the world. Gaia and I were exploring today, looking at places to photograph, and we came across the Barlow Wayside Park. Many of you already know if you have followed my work for more than a few years that I am an infrastructure geek. I love bridges, roads, and buildings, but only if they are old, and preferrably historic. I have posted about the Historic Columbia River Highway, the Saint Johns Bridge, the Hood River Hotel, and places like those for years. One historical roar that I have been curious about, but have not been able to really sink my teeth into, is the Barlow Road. It was part of the Oregon Trail, and parts of it still exist. I drove on two sections of it today, and the second section made no sense based on where the first section was. So... It's time to look at the original route, and see how it fits together, and do some more exploring in the area.
There is a creek called Little Joe Creek that runs through this area, but it's not of much interest at this spot. The trees, with their wavy, moss covered branches are much more interesting. That said, I think I'm going to go back and see if the creek has some more interesting things to show.
I took some 8x10 black and whites there too, so hopefully I will be able to post those after I develop them.

I enjoy taking pictures on the hillside between Rownea Crest, and the small town of Rowena, Oregon. You can see the effects of the rain shadow in the sparceness of the forest, and in the spindly oaks. I had the Twirly Camera out there in June, and used up a couple rolls of film.

We went out to the Lower Deschutes River Back Country Byway for the first time in a few years. I always get there shortly before I have to go home, though. At some point, I will have to go early. The light was interesting because a sizeable storm was coming. The sun was setting, so the intensity was fleeting. It was windy too. I was hoping that a train would thunder by, but no such luck.

Gaia and I were in The Dalles to have some work done on the car, and they gave me a rental.
So...
We drove out to find a place I haven't been to in 13 years. I was looking for a road with a sign that read "Harmony". That turned out to be Hay Canyon Road. It's a road bespckled with cattle and sagebrush, and is one of those places that oozes with western charm. I'm reading a book written by a homesteader / rancher from eastern Oregon, so I also understand (and in reality, I've understood for a long time) that it oozes with hardscrabble, holding on by your fingernails semi-arid farming. My hat is off to those people.

On the way out to the Dalles Mountain Ranch in way down southern Washington State, just up north of Oregon, over in the Eastern Columbia Gorge, which is centrally located in the Pacitic Northwest, there’s this cattle chut that looks like it’s still in use. I thought that there would be a good chance at a sunrise this morning, so I packed up the cameras, and headed for Crown Point. The road getting there was a bit, shall we say, mobile, because there have been landslides in the area, and a certain section of the road just before Crown Point is slowly sliding down the hillside a few inces a year, but other than that, it isn't a too harrowing drive. The sunrise did not disappoint. I present it here as I saw it.

I happened past Ruthton Point in Hood River, Oregon as a rare break in the clouds opened up to the west. Sunlight flooded the Columbia Gorge lke water breaking through a dam, and a rainbow appeared behind me as I fought to keep the driving rain off of the lens. I had the Lensbaby Double Glass out for a spin at Newport, Oregon. I also had a new Toyo 4x5 camera along, but I haven't developed the film yet. I needed to replace my Sinar Alpina because It's hard to set up. I want to be able to make camera kit with both digital and LF film that I can hike with, so I needed an extremely compact, and light 4x5. The Toyo will do the trick.
I like being around the ocean. I love the views, and the marinas, and the boats. I don't care for the smells, but you can't have everything.

The Boyd Mill is a now-derelict mill near The Dalles, Oregon. Rumor has it that Bob's Red Mill got its first set of srinding stones from here. I haven't seen confirmation, but, then again, I haven't looked. I caught it in winter a few years ago.

I had to put the tripod into the creek for this one, while I stood beside it trying not to fall in. I was standing on some old, downed trees that had very little rigidity left, and that hung out over the water a few feet. Water flowed underneath, and I worried about falling in. Well, I didn't, and I made it out dry.

It was a real knock-down, drag-em-out storm, as I remember. This was a few years ago. I had my first dgital camera for about a month, and I used it to not miss interesting, but fleeting images. In this case, we had some warning, but I didn’t want to be more than a few feet from the car just in case the heavens opened up mayhem upon the land, and our heads.

I was in the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness earlier in January. It was a miserable, rainy day: the kind of day that grows the moss you see everywhere in this picture. I overexposed this one, or, more truthfully, I let the camera overexpose it. I started to make it look like it actually did on that day, but I decided that I like this better.

I made two versions of this picture. One was this one, which I used a graduated neutral density filter courtesy of Nik Collection, and color corrected the greens. It took me 5 minutes. For the second one, I used exposure blending, three differnet Nik filters, and lots of other hocus pocus taking me an hour to get right. My wife liked this one better, so here it is.

Ruthton Point at Hood River is one of the Columbia Gorge's best sights. It was very windy today, so I didn't stay very long. There was a thunderhead cloud over the river, but it was not as evident by the time I got my camera set up.

Gaia and I were out taking pictures this week. My photography has been sparce lately because my job took over my live for the past few months. I’m out of the woods for a while, so I hope to give the cameras a good workout soon.
This is the view from Crown Point. It doesn’t get much better.

Spring had finally arrived in the Hood River Valley in late April. Gaia and I were at Packer Orchards to take pictures of the peach blossoms, and took advantage of a portrait background they had set up.

The substantial awning that used to be affixed to this building is now gone, but the rest of it looks much the same as when I photographed it in 2013. I'd say it needs some work.
