There was no better way to celebrate my birthday than having lunch with family! We had a delicious lunch at May Yan Chinese restaurant in Scarborough.

Pork with HamChoy and Muknee is a variation of a traditional Hakka Chinese dish that I grew up with in Jamaica.

HamChoy is preserved mustard greens and is a bit salty, in a great way! Muknee is dried wood ear mushrooms or fungus. Here, I used a shredded version.

Seasoning for the pork included garlic, five spice powder, green onions, hoisin sauce, bean sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce and a few other things.

To cook it, I tried something a little different. Rather than brown the meat in a bit of oil or use the air fryer, I started by boiling about half an inch of water and then adding the seasoned meat. Yes, you read that right. I boiled it!

After bringing it back to a high boil for about ten minutes, i reduced the heat to medium and then low. Once the meat was tender, I added the hamchoy, and muknee, and let it simmer for a while before thickening the gravy to finish it. Done! Delicious!

I love Greek food so when a friend invited me to join his family to check out the recently opened AGM Eatery, I said YESSS!

With hungry mouths to feed, we ordered several dishes, including the popular souvlaki, gyros, calamari, onion rings, and Greek salad.

The food looked good and everybody loved it! I had the gyros dinner and it was a tad dry but had decent flavour. I prefer the version of this made with fresh meat, not ground meat.

Normally, I would have done these frozen Fish & Chips in my toaster oven but I've been exploring the capabilities of my new air fryer.

For doing frozen precooked foods in either appliance, there isn't much difference in the way it turns out. The air fryer is quicker and cleaner to use but the toaster oven gets hotter, way hotter.

Maybe next time I'll do the fish in the air fryer and the fries and onion rings in my toaster oven. Stay tuned...

I finally got around to trying a Jamaican Jerk spice rub (sample) that I got at a food show a while back.

While it tasted decent, there was nothing authentic about its "jerk" flavour. First of all, it had way too much cinnamon, making it smell like I was baking pastries. Sugar and paprika are listed in the ingredients. These are not typical jerk seasonings, but it's listed as South American cuisine. Hmmm...

It's been a little while since I've had Jamaican Beef Patties by Tinnel's but when I saw them on sale for under $9.00 for a box of ten (at No Frills), I just had to get them!

They have a nice crispy/flaky crust with a decent tasting filling. Personally, I would have preferred a tad more filling and a bit more seasoning. Not bad, however.

This is the second half of the bag of Korean Kimchi and Pork dumplings that I got at WalMart. This time, I fried them a little longer and added some chilies. Some kimchi on the side was perfect!

I've been making good use of my deep fryer lately, and putting my cravings to rest. This time, I did some chicken and fries, and continued my experiment with onion rings.

The chicken was simple, seasoned with granulated garlic, salt, and pepper, and some Goya Adobo All Purpose Seasoning. It was dusted in flour before being fried.

My experimenting with onion rings continues, even though I didn't have any large onions in the pantry. I tried some in a flour batter and some coated in bread crumbs. They both tasted good. Hmmm, I can't decide.

I do enjoy a good fried chicken and this time, I did it in the air fryer with zero oil!

I started with a pack of chicken and no idea what I was going to do with it. This dish just evolved along the way. Air fried chicken. Panko bread crumbs for a nice crunch. Green onions. Fries. Parmesan cheese on the fries. Oh, I have some kimchi in the fridge. I love kimchi!

I hungered for Korean BBQ so I decided to give it a decent effort this time. It turned out yummy!

I had a piece of pork butt in the freezer that I cut into thin slices while it was still partially frozen. I used a bottle of "Korean BBQ" seasoning as a base but I added a few extra ingredients to it.

I made the slaw and bean sprouts but I bought the kimchi. It all tasted pretty good!

OMG! I am loving my air fryer! The food cooks quicker than using conventional methods and is far less greasy while remaining moist and juicy inside.

These Honey Garlic Pork Riblets were perfectly cooked in only 12 minutes at 400F! I tossed it in honey as soon as it came out of the fryer, giving it a nice even coating. It tasted great!

The potatoes, in contrast, took longer but also turned out great. I tossed that with some Parmesan. Maybe next time, I'll start them in the microwave and finish them in the air fryer.

The menu at the newly opened Owl of Minerva in Pickering has so many dishes that I like, it's hard to choose what to have next.

This Bulgogi certainly hit the spot with its generous serving of stir-fried beef, vegetables, and rice. Normally, this is served on a sizzling platter but it was still delicious as takeout!

I've been making good use of my deep fryer lately, and putting my cravings to rest. This time, I did some chicken and fries, and continued my experiment with onion rings.

The chicken was simple, seasoned with granulated garlic, salt, and pepper, and some Goya Adobo All Purpose Seasoning. It was dusted in flour before being fried.

My experimenting with onion rings continues, even though I didn't have any large onions in the pantry. I tried some in a flour batter and some coated in bread crumbs. They both tasted good. Hmmm, I can't decide.

Everything tasted great, especially since each dish was accompanied by some cold noodles, kimchi, and bean sprouts. As with most outlets in this food court, the portions are very generous and the prices are cheap!

It's been a long time since I've been to PJay's. Their food is outstanding but it's a bit out of the way for me to get to.

Of course, I had to get some of their patties, ranked as one of the best in Toronto! They were excellent, one of the best in the city!

I've known Patrick, the owner, for many years. Our dads were good friends who enjoyed a good game of mah jong. Patrick and I prefer golf.

Similar to the last batch of wings I made, this one had a slight Korean influence with the shredded green onions and kimchi.

After deep frying the wings, I tossed them in a honey garlic chili sauce, and served them with fries and a tossed salad. It was delicious!

I've been using an old-school deep fryer, basically a deep pot with a fry basket and lots of oil. I've been contemplating a newer electric fryer and/or slow cooker, kinda like what I've seen from Instant Pot. Any recommendations?

Steamed Egg with Ground Pork. This is another Hakka Chinese dish I grew up with in Jamaica. This version has Pork and Dried Shrimps. I usually add Corned Fish and Salted Duck Eggs on top to finish it but this was another pantry dive. It turned out well and tasted yummy!

Another Air Fryer Adventure...

I did a whole Rock Cornish Hen in the air fryer and it was delicious!

I had used the Poultry setting (400F at 15 minutes) and it was pretty good but I had to put it back in for a couple minutes. Maybe because the meat was a bit dense? Or maybe because I had stuffed it with herbs, preventing the air from circulating through the cavity? I think next time I'll try 375F at 20-22 minutes.

This is the best, most versatile kitchen appliance I've used in a long time! More experiments to come...

This Cantonese style Beef Chow Mein was delicious, with its crispy noodles and veggies. At $9.00, including soup, tea, and tax, it was a great deal!

I really enjoy a good steak every once in a while. These were on sale at my local market - three steaks for only $10. They were tender and juicy, a lot better than I had expected.

These were done in a pan on the stovetop and basted with butter, something I haven't done in a while. I've been using an electric grill, a toaster oven, and even my oven. This was the quickest method and maybe the best but kinda messy.
