It was nice to go out for dinner with friends again! A small group of us made it to the recently opened Maya Bay Thai Snack Bar. Located at Parliament and Carlton, this is the newest offering from the folks behind BKK Thai and Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen.

The food is authentically Thai and absolutely delicious! We also had some refreshing cocktails and an icy dessert that hit the spot on this hot day!

Korean Pork Bone Soup

Some of my recent meals have been influenced by Korean cuisine. It's been a while since I've had Gam Ja Tang (Pork Bone Soup) so when a friend suggested I try this new place, of course I had to.

There was a generous amount of meat on the bones and lots of each side dish. As usual, it was served in a cast iron bowl, still bubbling hot.

The flavour wasn't bad but I think it would have been better if the broth had been cooked a bit longer. The side dishes were very good.

The rest of the menu had some interesting dishes that I would come back to try.

It's been a long time since I've had a good pizza. This one was great! PORT, located on Frenchman's Bay in Pickering, may just be the only restaurant in Durham County located right on the waterfront. The ambiance is outstanding, especially in the evening, watching the sun set over the bay. Beautiful!

The food is also pretty darn good! Since reopening after a COVID shutdown, their menu has been pared down but still has some great tasting food, mostly lighter fare.

We tried their Chicken Caprese Pizza (basil pesto, cherry tomatoes, Parmesan, white sauce), done in their wood fired pizza oven. It was absolutely delicious!

PORT was recently nominated for 27 awards in Ajax Pickering's News Advertiser Readers' Choice Awards, all well deserved! I wish them luck in the voting!

I Love Indian food! Charminar in Whitby serves up delicious South Indian cuisine, and even a few Hakka Chinese dishes.

On this occasion, we had the Hyperabadi Chicken Dum Biryani, Hakka Noodles with Chicken, Chicken Lollipops, Tandoori Chicken, and Gobi Manchurian.

Every dish was well seasoned, spicy, was delicious!

I had the good fortune of being invited to try the food at the newly opened Scotchiees at Malvern Mall in Scarborough. Even better, I was able to invite a few foodie friends to join me. Don'y worry, we weren't all there at the same time.

The Escovitch Snapper and King Fish were delicious, especially with the fried dumplings. The whole snapper and king fish steak were perfectly done.The pickled vegetables were just right.

The steak wasn't bad but a bit overcooked for my liking. It was served with roasted potatoes and vegetables.

Scotchiees has only been open for a week, serving up Jamaican food. Give them a try!

Dinner was a simple affair with deep fried chicken and asparagus, a cold potato and egg salad, and a simple tossed salad with feta cheese.

The chicken looks overdone but it was actually perfect on the inside. Maybe the oil was too hot. Did you know that when deep frying food, it floats when it's done? True! Of course, modern air fryers operate differently.

The asparagus was a last-minute addition. They were on the verge of going bad but after trimming off the soft bits and battering them, kinda tempura style, they turned out very good!

On my previous visit, I was apparently only the fourth customer of this brand new establishment and it was obvious they were still working through a few kinks and getting used to all new things.

I think they got it sorted out now. This visit went a lot smoother and the service was quicker.

Pork Gyros is one of my favourite Greek dishes and these guys do it well, very well! They use layers of seasoned meat rather than ground meat. I had the wrap, which included onions, tzatziki, and fries. Yes, fries! I've heard this is the traditional way it's prepared in Greece. Yummy!

I also had one stick each of pork and chicken souvlaki, with pita and tzatziki. This was also very delicious! Especially the tzatziki!

If the logo and name seem familiar, the owner is the brother and former partner with The Greek Freak. This place, however, shares space (and more) with Mona's Roti, also new to Durham but with a proven track record and following in Scarborough. Check them out for delicious food!

Even though the weather has been hot lately, I had a craving for soup. I made this simple Chinese style pork soup that certainly satisfied my tummy.

In addition to pork, I used a bunch of dried ingredients, including kale, shrimps, squid, mushrooms, plums, and then added carrots and green onions. I wish I had some ginger. I also made a dipping sauce for the pork, with green onions, soy sauce, and some oil (heated until smoking). Simple and delicious!

On a rare and recent visit to First Markham Place, I picked up some food from Extra BBQ House, located in the food court.

This generous platter of BBQ Duck, Roast Pork, Chicken, and BBQ Pork was not only cheap but also very delicious! It was definitely enough to feed three people! Yummy!

Air fryers don't actually "fry" your food. They are, in reality, a miniature convection oven that circulates hot air around your food in a confined space. That gives it the effect of "frying" the food with very little or no oil. It also means quicker cooking times and no messy oil spills to clean up!

These perfectly cooked wings were done in only fifteen minutes, with no preheating and no oil added. They were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Here is my version of Sweet & Sour Pork. I like to slice the pork thin and deep fry it so it's crispy. Rather than saturate it with sauce, I just drizzle it over the top so it remains crispy. Delicious!

Mmm, I love steak, Pork Steak that is! While it may not be the same as eating a juicy Ribeye, I do enjoy a good Pork Shoulder Steak. It's juicy, tender, very versatile in preparation, and cheap!

This one, just under a pound (less than half a kilo) was under $4.00. I treated it just like a steak, seasoning it with Montreal Steak Spice, and broiled it in my toaster oven. It was perfect!

BTW, I do love a good Beef Ribeye Steak, too!

It's been a couple of years since I've eaten a sub and I've been meaning to try Firehouse Subs for quite a while. As luck would have it, I won a meal, courtesy of @smileey.lucy and @fhs.markham.stouffville. Yesss! Thank you!

After perusing their menu, all looking delicious, I settled on the New York Steamer (corned beef brisket, pastrami, melted provolone, deli mustard, mayo, and Italian dressing). I upgraded from a bag of chips to a small bowl of Chili, and finished off the meal with a Cherry Coke.

The sandwich was very meaty and delicious, with all fresh condiments. The chili was pretty good, and I always enjoy Cherry Coke!

I usually start my chili with some bacon, before adding ground beef, ground pork, and all the seasonings. Next comes stewed tomatoes, pinto beans, corn, and then finish with tomato paste to thicken.

These Korean Kimchi Dumplings, or Mandu, tasted pretty darn good. I got them frozen from WalMart, of all places. They were only $2.88 per bag in the frozen food section. Only half of them are shown here.

Mandu can be steamed, boiled, pan-fried, or deep-fried. Here, I lightly pan fried them and had them with some kimchi and soy sauce. Delicious!

I've been trying out a few things in my new air fryer and these pork short ribs are my favourite so far!

I cut them all apart and seasoned them with some garlic, salt, pepper, Chinese five spice, and a dash of light soy sauce. I dredged them in flour - egg - panko bread crumbs before putting them in the air fryer. After cooking them at 400F for only 15 minutes, they were perfectly cooked, with nice colour, and a wonderful crunchy texture. Once they were done, I drizzled some honey over them and had some kimchi on the side. Delicious!

I am loving my air fryer!!!

I love the richness and spices of Indian food but I've never attempted to cook it. The West Indian style curry dishes that I grew up with are considerably different.

Thankfully, I was invited to an event last summer, hosted by @jojoinstameets and featuring foods prepared with @thespicetailor.ca products.

I finally had the chance to try cooking something, using the spices I got at the event. This time, it was Tikka Masala with Chicken. The instructions were easy to follow and the results were very delicious!

I love Greek food so when a friend invited me to join his family to check out the recently opened AGM Eatery, I said YESSS!

With hungry mouths to feed, we ordered several dishes, including the popular souvlaki, gyros, calamari, onion rings, and Greek salad.

The food looked good and everybody loved it! I had the gyros dinner and it was a tad dry but had decent flavour. I prefer the version of this made with fresh meat, not ground meat.

Sweet and Sour Pork Hocks is an old-school Hakka Chinese Jamaican dish that brings back memories. It is flavoured mostly with garlic, ginger, sugar, and vinegar.

Traditionally, this dish is made with pig's trotters (feet) but I prefer the meatier hocks. The flavours tend to be a little more pronounced the next day, or the next.

It's been a long time since I've cooked this but it turned out very well. Delicious!

These Pork Riblets with Asparagus and Scalloped Potatoes turned out great!

The ribs were seasoned with a little salt, black pepper, steak spice and chopped garlic, done in the air fryer for 15 minutes, and then I drizzled some honey over it. Simple. Tasty!

The asparagus was sauteed in a pan with a little butter and garlic. The scalloped potatoes were left over from a previous meal.

Korean style BBQ Wings, done in my air fryer, turned out pretty good, even though the sauce caramelized a bit too much on some of the smaller pieces.

This was only my second time using the air fryer. It has a lot of potential, beyond "frying." What shall I try next!
