A diverse delegation of Christian leaders are today delivering an open letter signed by more than 800 Australians calling on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to rethink the government's rejection of the gift of solar panels for Kirribilli House.
"Experts have assured us there is really no practical reason to reject the gift of solar panels for Kirribilli House," said Jody Lightfoot, climate justice campaigner at Common Grace.
"We understand the important heritage value of Kirribilli House so we had a chat to Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore who told us the City of Sydney has already installed 5,500 solar panels on nearly 30 buildings including ones with irreplaceable heritage value such as Sydney Town Hall,” said Mr Lightfoot.
The letter rejecting the solar panels came via Michael McCormack, Member for Riverina, in his capacity as the parliamentary secretary to the finance minister.
“The rejection of our gift of solar panels for Kirribilli House is symbolic of the government’s failure to invest in renewables, but we’re here to provide the Prime Minister with an opportunity to choose a brighter future for all Australians and to back the 9 in 10 Australians who want a strong Renewable Energy Target," said Mr Lightfoot.
"We know that climate change means more frequent and intense extreme weather events hitting the world's poorest people the hardest. We only need to look to our Pacific Island neighbours to see the devastating cost of climate change. We could be leading the world in taking action on climate change and as Christians we urge Prime Minister Abbott not to reject the sun's grace," said Jarrod McKenna, National Director of Common Grace.
The gift of twelve solar panels was crowdfunded over four days in December by Common Grace, a movement of Christians who are passionate about Jesus and justice. The Solar Council (the peak body for the solar industry in Australia) offered to install the crowdfunded solar panels for Kirribilli House at no cost.
“Trying something new can feel daunting, but we encourage Prime Minister Abbott to look to the Vatican where in 2008 Pope Benedict accepted a gift of 2700 solar panels to provide clean energy to the Holy See," said Sister Jan Barnett of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
“More than one hundred Australians pitched in to buy the gift of solar for Kirribilli House and now hundreds more are urging the Prime Minister to accept our gift. The solar panels are a gift for the nation, from the nation, to demonstrate public support for a clean energy future,” said Byron Smith, Assistant Minister, St George's Anglican Church.
“If the City of Sydney can install solar panels on the Sydney Town Hall just across the harbour and Pope Benedict could accept a gift of solar panels for the Vatican, we believe Prime Minister Abbott has no excuses for not accepting our free gift for his Sydney residence," said Mr Smith.
“If the Prime Minister accepts the gift of solar for Kirribilli House he’ll be in good company with 1 in 5 Australian households already using solar,” he said.
The open letter encouraging the Prime Minister to accept the solar gift (signed by more than 800 Australians in the last five days) is below.
Christian leaders delivering the open letter today: Sister Jan Barnett, Sisters of Saint Joseph; Rev. Dr Michael Frost, Founder of Small Boat Big Sea; Byron Smith, Assistant Minister, St George's Anglican Church; Rev. John Buchanan, Minister, St Peter's Presbyterian Church; Rev. David Gore, Uniting Church Minister; Weis Shiuringa, Member, Quakers; Jacqui Remond, Director, Catholic Earthcare Australia; Jody Lightfoot, Climate Justice Campaigner, Common Grace.
THE OPEN LETTER:
Dear Prime Minister Abbott,
We are disappointed that the Government has rejected the gift of solar panels for Kirribilli House that was crowd funded last Christmas by 142 Christians. We had hoped you would accept them as a great first step to get Australia moving towards a strong Renewable Energy Target.
We understand that the reasons for declining the gift are Kirribilli House’s heritage listing, ongoing costs of cleaning and maintenance, and security concerns. So we did some research and found many people in your home state and abroad have overcome these challenges.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore informed us that the City of Sydney has already installed 5,500 solar panels on nearly 30 buildings including ones with irreplaceable heritage value such as Sydney Town Hall. We discovered Australia’s own actress, Cate Blanchett, installed 1,906 solar panels on Sydney Theatre Company heritage building. I’m sure she’d be willing to give some pointers if you gave her a call?
On cleaning concerns, John Grimes, CEO of the peak body of the solar industry in Australia (Australian Solar Council), informed us that solar panels do not require ongoing cleaning or yearly maintenance - they are cleaned by the rain. Some utilities require a check of the inverter, but this can be done on the ground every five years.
Looking abroad, did you know that President Carter managed to get solar panels installed on the White House way back in 1979? And Pope Benedict negotiated the same kinds of hurdles when he accepted a gift of 2700 solar panels providing clean energy to the Vatican in 2008.
Prime Minister, we believe that a man in your position can overcome challenges like heritage listings and cleaning concerns and choose a brighter future for all Australians. We therefore urge you to implement a strong Renewable Energy Target and accept the gift of solar panels for Kirribilli House, as a powerful signal to the world that Australia’s renewables industry is officially open for business.
Yours sincerely,
Australian Christians and friends

St Mary, Kersey, Suffolk
Kersey is often described as Suffolk's prettiest village, although it might be more accurate to say that it is the county's quaintest. It sits in one of the crumpled valleys where the landscape corrugates to the north of Hadleigh, and while this village can become irritatingly overrun with tourists in summer (although nowhere as bad as when Lovejoy was on television) it is a very atmospheric place in late winter, with a chill in the air under a heavy sky, and crows calling achingly across the bleak fields. You get the impression of continuity, and that it may be a working village after all.
St Mary stands aloof from it all above the village street at the top of the hill. Beside it sits Suffolk's smallest school, and to the south the surviving evidence of a 19th century tree collector. The view northwards from it is tremendous, across the Brett valley. The tower is that of a good Suffolk cloth church, a little sister to nearby Lavenham. Because it is so grand, it makes the north aisle and nave appear rather small, which in fact they are, for take away the Victorian chancel and this is not a big church.
The north door faces the village, but the main entrance into the church is through the flushwork of the south porch, one of Suffolk's best, as at Boxford, where the grand south porch is also on the 'wrong' side of the church. The carvings in the spandrels are curious - one appears to show a tree with two fish, the other an entwined foliage crown.
Why build such a fine structure on the south rather than the north? Perhaps it was because there already was a good north porch when the late medieval donor chose to contribute a grand new one. But Simon Cotton suggests another theory. Perhaps it was intended, not for villagers, but for visitors to the shrine of Our Lady of Kersey. A Papal Bull of 1464 takes up the story: To all Christ's faithful etc, Pius II, having learned that to the parish church of St Mary Kersey (called de Pietate) in the diocese of Norwich, there was a great resort of the faithful on account of the infinite miracles which, by the merits and intercessions of the same Virgin, had been and were being wrought daily by Almighty God at a certain image of her in the said church, granted in perpetuity, under date Id March Anno 6 to all who, being truly penitent and having confessed, visited on the feasts of the Annunciation and Nativity of the said Virgin, from the first to the second vespers and give alms for the enlargement and restoration of the said church, an indulgence of three years and three quarantines of enjoined penance, the said grant to be null and void if any similar and unexpired indulgence had been granted by the said pope. If the niche inside on the north wall contained the image, then the south porch would have provided maximum impact on entry.
You step into a well-ordered, well-kept, well-fed church. Because of its location, this church receives a large number of visitors, but in fact it is not an easy church to read. There is a complexity to its developing and reordering, and much that has been preserved is no longer in situ. Broadly speaking, the interior can be divided into three parts. The nave is slender and high, a development of an earlier space at the opening of the 15th century. The wide north aisle dates from half a century earlier, a splendid Decorated space before the Black Death made us all serious. The two together make a light, square space bisected by a high, lovely arcade. The chancel is all 19th century.
What happened here? On the eve of the Black Death, a major reconstruction was begun. The north aisle was almost completed, work on the tower commenced. Then the horror of the mid-14th century intervened, and work stopped. Mortlock says that the location of the tower shows that a south aisle was also planned. It was never to be built, and before the mid-16th century Reformation finally brought all work to a stop the tower was completed and a porch built directly onto the south side of the nave. The imperative for this work being completed is explained by the shrine described by Simon Cotton above, there could be no waiting around for the money for another aisle. And then, the Reformation happened, and it all came to an end.
The north aisle remains the most interesting part of the building. There are extensive remains of wall painting, although there are almost no discernible figures or features. About halfway along the north wall is a large angel; he appears to be carrying an upside down pair of pincers, in which case it might be part of a sequence of instruments of the passion, or perhaps it is the top pivot of a balance, in which case he is St Michael. There is another remnant of wall painting in the nave, which Cautley identified in the 1930s as St George, although this would be rather hard to say certainly now. Above the arcade, you can see how the rood loft stretched across aisle and chancel arch, with a doorway between the two.
The great niche mentioned above now contains salvaged images, including part of a large alabaster trinity group, the crucified Christ being held by the Father. They are displayed behind perspex, making photography rather difficult. At the east end of the aisle, two great niches flank the altar with rescued statuary. To the left is a mutilated St Anne. On the floor here is what is claimed to be a recovered early font, but it looks rather more like a holy water stoup.
Fixed to the wall here are panels from the rood screen. Now, it is possible that all this medieval curiosae did not come from this church originally, simply because it would be so easy for a 19th century collector to have installed them here. Be that as it may, these six panels are very splendid, including one of Suffolk's best 15th Century images of St Edmund, and there are two more kings and three Old Testament prophets.
perhaps this building is more a reflection of 19th century Anglican triumphalism than it is of its Catholic past, and the historical evidence, the rood screen, ancient font, carvings and statues, are all preserved somewhat in the manner of a museum, that is to say without the liturgical integrity of, for instance, Dennington. Nevertheless, the interior is light and airy, and to its eternal credit the parish has resisted setting up one of those hideous craft shops so familiar from other Suffolk churches in tourist villages.
Perhaps the most moving thing in the whole building is the set of sedilia in the north aisle, with a squint through to the now rebuilt chancel. Look at the beautiful arcading as it intersects at the top of the sedilia. The carving peters out. It was never finished. This was where the mason had got to on that morning when news of pestilence and disaster reached the Brett Valley.

Shining Light on Secret TPP agreement & calling on Congress to
STOP Fast Track
For Immediate Release: Day before Wikileak of TPP Document - 13 Cities

Deal Telling Congress "Don't Fast Track a Train Wreck - FLUSH the
TPP!"

SEATTLE - On Tuesday evening citizens in Seattle and 12
other cities appeared on overpasses and roadsides to pull the
Trans-Pacific Partnership, aka TPP, out of the shadows and into the
light of public scrutiny. From Dallas to DC, San Diego to Seattle,
Tucson to Detroit, Baltimore to Bellingham, Spokane to Chicago
people took their messages to interstate overpasses, prominent
monuments, and busy city streets using coordinated daytime and
nighttime, high visibility tactics.
They deployed giant banners saying No New NAFTA, mobilized LED light
panels saying "(thumbs up) Democracy, STOP The TPP," and projected with
spotlights messages like "Don't Fast Track A Train Wreck." These
coordinated citizen's actions coincided with ongoing TPP negotiations
taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah from November 12-24
and today's anticipated release by Congressperson Rosa DeLauro and
George Miller detailing the growing opposition to "Fast Track" among
Congress, and preceded today's surprise release by Wikileaks of a leaked
chapter of the secretive "TPP" agreement. [Here
is Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch initial interpretations of the
chapter on intellectual property.]
The TPP has been called NAFTA on steroids, a "Corporate Coup," and
concerned citizens from across the nation are calling on Congress to
"Flush It!" and to oppose President Obama's request to renew "Fast
Track" authority to commit our country to this secretive agreement that
has less to do with trade, than it does with dismantling any domestic
policies that undermine future profits for transnational capital and
corporations.
Bill Moyer, Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign stated "Only a
bought a sold government would sign a treaty that sacrifices our
capacity as communities and country to pass laws for workers benefit,
and the protection of our communities and our natural resources."
The Trans-Pacific Partnership has been negotiated under secrecy for 3
years. Obama is now pushing to have it swiftly approved to much to the
dismay of members of Congress, most of whom haven't even been allowed to
see the text. While Congress is constitutionally required to negotiate
any international treaties, Fast Track or granting Obama Trade Promotion
Authority would forfeit the Congress' responsibility and the public's
right to weigh in on the TPP negotiations.
Perhaps in response to growing citizen outrage letters were release
today from both Democrats and Republicans challenging President Obama's
request for renewal of Fast Track authority. [From Today's Public
Citizen announcement: The
151-signature DeLauro-Miller letter, additional
letter from Democratic Ways & Means members, One
of two letters, this led by Representative Walter Jones (R-NC)]
One of the illuminated messages on Tuesday read "Corporate Tribunals
WTF?" This referred to how the TPP would give more power to corporate
interests including the ability for foreign companies to sue for
taxpayer compensation if any domestic law diminished the company's expected future profits.
Masked as a trade deal, the agreement has been negotiated under
supervision of 600 unelected corporate "trade advisors" while the text
has been hidden from members of Congress, the press, and the public.
What has been learned about the TPP has come through leaked texts, and
is alarming to members of Congress worried about sovereign powers being
negotiated away, public health officials, labor representatives,
environmental groups, and advocates of consumer issues.
"The TPP, the largest ever of it's kind, is a race to the bottom
international agreement on domestic and international policies of food
safety, internet freedom, medicine costs, financial regulation, and the
environment," says Kristen Beifus, executive director of Washington Fair
Trade Coalition."
Trade Justice organizations have declared December 3rd a "Global Day of
Action Against the TPP to resist toxic trade agreements." Citizens are
urged to take action in their own community, contact their
congressperson, and learn more about the TPP's dismantling of democracy
by visiting VoteNoFastTrack.org.

Tuesday's coordinated actions were organized by the Backbone Campaign,
which specializes in "amplifying citizen engagement with creative
tactics and artful activism" in collaboration with Public Citizen's
Global Trade Watch, PopularResistance.org, Fair Trade Coalitions in
Washington and Oregon, and more.
The coordinated day of action follows on the heals of an action in
September when to the surprise of secret service, members and allies of
PopularResistance.org and the Backbone Campaign "redecorated"
the United States Trade Representatives office by scaling the building
and unfurling giant banners demanding a release of the TPP text. The
Backbone Campaign is grateful to Wikileaks for beginning that process.

Steven Tyler
The Bad Boys from Boston, American rockers Aerosmith headlined the first of two nights of the Calling Festival newly relocated to South London’s Clapham Common.
The Steven Tyler-led rockers brought their unique blend of entertaining rock to a damp London evening, re-energising the sodden crowd with a mixed set drawn from their extensive back catalogue as well a cover of The Beatles 1969 hit Come Together. They began the 18-song set with Mama Kin from their 1973 eponymous debut album before moving onto Get a Grip hit Eat the Rich and Pump classing Love in an Elevator.
Hits Walk This Way and Dude (Looks Like a Lady) also featured before the encore was opened with classic Dream On featuring Tyler playing piano and Joe Perry playing guitar … on the piano!
It’s surprising just how much energy the 66-year-old Tyler and 63-year-old Perry convey up on stage with such engaging performances and on-stage hijinks that kept the crowd enthralled from the outset until the closing bars of Toys in the Attic classic Sweet Emotion.
HKFP: Thousands gathered at Edinburgh Place on Wednesday evening calling on G20 countries to raise concerns about Hong Kong at the leaders’ summit on Friday, hours after staging a mass march to foreign consulates to lobby country representatives directly.
Crowds wearing all-black spilt out of the public square, many holding signs that read “Free Hong Kong” and “Democracy Now.”
Organisers, the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), issued a statement urging a withdrawal of the government’s suspended extradition bill.
“If you believe in values like democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law like we do, please, we urge all of you to voice out during the G20 summit, and defend our rights together with Hong Kong people,” it read.
The pro-democracy coalition have led millions on marches over recent weeks against the bill, as demands have evolved into calling for universal suffrage ahead of the July 1 pro-democracy rally.
CHRF manifesto :
"Withdraw the Extradition Bill! Free Hong Kong!
A time when democracy and freedom are universal values that are inviolable.
Hong Kong people had urged for democratisation for over 30 years. When Hong Kong was handed over to China since 1997, as written in the Sino-British Joint Declaration, China promised that Hong Kong can enjoy One Country Two Systems and a high degree of autonomy. The Basic Law also promised universal suffrage to be implemented in the year of 2007 to 2008. But China broke these promises, and gradually intervened deeply in Hong Kong’s internal affairs.
Hong Kong people have always insisted on having universal suffrage – to let Hong Kong people rule Hong Kong. Unfortunately, we seem to be further and further away from genuine democracy. In merely 22 years after the hand-over, the One Country Two Systems principle barely survives. During the [legislative] process of the “Extradition Bill”, the Hong Kong Liaison Office blatantly intervened in Hong Kong’s internal affairs and scrapped the promises of [a] high degree of autonomy.
This year, the government decided to put the Extradition Bill through Legislative Council, in order to make all people in Hong Kong, including local citizens and expats, to be potentially extradited to China, or to countries which have less protection on human rights and the rule of law. This will destroy existing protection on human rights and the rule of law in Hong Kong and will crack down the last defence to freedom and safety.
In our current political system, Hong Kong does not have genuine democracy. To stop this evil law from passing, 1.03 million followed by 2 million Hongkongers courageously took to the streets in the past two weeks. Some were even cracked down by the police with excessive, disproportionate force and lethal weapons. But the government only gave a shallow apology, without making any tangible changes.
As world leaders meet at the G20 summit, Hong Kong citizens now sincerely urge all of you, including Xi Jinping, to answer our humble questions: Does Hong Kong deserve democracy? Should Hong Kong people enjoy democracy? Can [a] democratic system be implemented in Hong Kong now?
Dear friends from around the world. I believe you have seen through media and the Internet, that Hongkongers spared no efforts to safeguard our freedom. Please bear in mind: if the Extradition Bill passes, when you come to Hong Kong to travel, study or for business, you may face unfair trials. If you believe in values like democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law like we do, please, we urge all of you to voice out, during the G20 summit and defend our rights together with Hong Kong people."

OK, I didn't slaughter this pig, nor did I cook it or garnish the porker with bell peppers. And god knows I didn't have the chef cut me a slice.
All I did was take a photo of what was already there. It's really no different than an Ecuadorian visiting the US and taking pictures of funnel cakes and curly fries at an American county fair. Sort of. Almost.
