Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus

"Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus was a Roman politician and general of the 2nd century BC. Brutus led the Roman legions in the conquest of western Iberia after the death of Viriathus, chieftain of the Lusitanians. In his conquest, he scored major victories in the south of modern Portugal, before going on to the north. He had the city of Olissipo (modern Lisbon) fortified and advanced to the north, destroying settlements as he went. A fortified position was established at Viseu, the Douro river was crossed and the Lima river was reached by 137 BC. Ultimately, according to Strabo, Brutus conquered the Minho River. At the end of Brutus' campaigns, Rome controlled the territory between the Douro and Minho rivers plus probable extensions along the coast and in the interior.

(...)

Amongst authors in Antiquity, the tiny Limia River between Northern Portugal and Galicia (Spain) was said to have the same properties of memory loss as the legendary Lethe River. In 138 BC, the Roman general Decimus Junius Brutus sought to dispose of the myth, as it impeded his military campaigns in the area. He was said to have crossed the Limia and then called his soldiers on the other side, one by one, by name. The soldiers, astonished that their general remembered their names, crossed the river as well without fear. This act proved that the Limia was not as dangerous as the local myths described." DDC-Calling

I gave her a call and she turned round and looked at me. We were on our way out to play ball!

The Calling is a public artwork by American artist Mark di Suvero located in O'Donnell Park, which is on the lakefront in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. The artwork was made in 1981-82 from steel I-beams painted an orange-red color. It measures 40 feet in height, and it sits at the end of Wisconsin Avenue in front of the footbridge that leads to the Milwaukee Art Museum.Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Mattiscombe South Hams Coast Path Devon.

"Ramblings"

Enjoyed a rather windy circular (watch your step and be bloody careful) walk via Start point car park with a lengthy stop off over looking Mattiscombe beach watching the waves roll in.

Gusty 50mph plus wind from the south, south east with nowhere to realy shelter along the coastal path unless you tucked yourself down on the beach so I was feeling rather weathered leaving when the forcast rain showers moved in late afternoon.

I was not expecting much in the way of bird spotting over the land as most were probably hunkering down amongst the gorse etc, but the seabirds were fairly active with some having a bit of hard time flying into a gusty 50mph headwind.

As expected our little hardy male Stonechats were occasionally showing and calling on top of the gorse busy announcing their territory along with attracting a mate I suspect.

With the weather over the next few weeks becoming a tad more settled down this neck of the woods and a little more in the way of early spring like conditions things should step up a gear as far bird spotting goes. So looking forward to welcoming back to South Devon some of our early spring migrants.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; ‘

A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal;

A time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

A time to mourn, and a time to dance.

Chief Doubleday, my partner and Crew Chief, and I were in the military district of Da-Nang, way up in I Corps, RVN. He went in the Public Information office to get the latest requirements for our assignment at the Construction Battalion Camp just outside town. I stayed with the jeep, as you never left anything unattended even for one second, ever.

* * *

This scene caught my eye. It was interesting to watch it play out. When we drove up a few minutes ago, the MP was alone, standing guard outside the PIO compound. A couple of minutes later, a little guy in blue and white striped pajamas with brightly colored balloons walked over to him.

The Guard maintained a military bearing as the little guy's balloons on strings floated around him. I have to hand it to him, he was as rigid as a British Royal Guard. :~)

What is the subject of this picture? All pictures must have a subject, a reason for being. In this case it is the colorful balloons, of course. What else could it be? If there were no balloons there would be no picture.

People didn't die all around me everyday in Viet-Nam. This was a short scene of real life, at odds with all the fighting and dying just outside of town. I liked the picture then, and I like it now, more than 40 years later, as I replay it in my memory. It brings a smile as I sit here looking at it even now.

I remember taking each Viet-Nam picture that I post here. Every one. Also remember the conditions under which it was taken. The sounds, the smells around me as I worked. I'm not talking about Flashbacks here. "Memories" and "Flashbacks" are two different things altogether.

I go through my pictures, calling up every memory I have about it. I've got to be sane, or else I wouldn't be able to call up these tiny details, records of that long ago war. The older I get the more important my state of sanity becomes. My short term memory is becoming a real problem. My long term memory is like a bear trap. That's what keeps me going most of the time.

Short term memory is just old age creeping up on me.

this horse was calling out to a group away in the distance

On what looks to be a fairly relaxed shaift, and long before the dawn of the digital age, a Lancashire Constabulary sergeant transmits to radio equipped patrols from the local control room based at Leigh Police Station.

The rack on the wall behind holds some of the ‘handheld’ portable radio sets available to officers of the time.

Though notoriously unreliable and plagued by bad reception in the early days, the widespread deployment of radio marked a great leap forward in police communications and ultimately brought about the demise of the iconic police whistle.

The collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archive which is currently being digitised, has produced a series of marvellously evocative images of policing in the past.

The latest gems to be unearthed are a series of images taken in and around Leigh during, we originally thought, the early 1970s. However sharp-eyed viewers have pointed out that they are more likely to be the late 1960s.

They come from a set of images labelled Lancashire County Constabulary Training Slides and depict various officers on patrol in the town centre, at work in the police station or undertaking a variety of other duties.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse of bygone Leigh. We will be publishing further images from this series in the near future.

For further images from this series please see the Lancashire County Police Training set

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,

For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats
