An overshoot grist mill was built in 1868 by John P. Cable.
John P. Cable built his grist mill in Cades Cove. He was a descendent of Peter Cable, a Pennsylvania Dutch farmer who had arrived in the area in the 1820s and designed an elaborate system to drain the swampy lands located in the western part of the cove.
John Cable was the only person in Cades Cove to use an overshot water wheel, a gravity wheel which harnesses the force of gravity acting vertically on the water as it travels from the top to the bottom of the wheel. Cable Mill's power was supplied by Mill Creek, although a connecting channel was dug to Forge Creek so the mill could tap both streams when water levels were low.
Cable Mill took double advantage of its waterwheel by using it to power saw mills as well. This revolutionized the way homes were built in the cove, as people switched from using logs to lumber and frame construction. The Gregg Cable house still stands as an example of a frame built house in Cades Cove.

April's little boy, Cable. I love how he comes off all spunky despite the brilliant shock of pink hair.

The hike/climb to the summit of Half Dome is something that has to be experienced, first hand, to be full appreciated. The views on this hike are awe inspiring. There are many accounts of this hike on the internet with many different views about preparation and difficulty. We would recommend two things. Start as early as possible if you are starting from the valley floor (we were on the trail at 5:15 am)... and take your time! Pace yourself, stop and take in the scenery often. And, yes, the cable climb at the top can be a daunting experience. If you look closely at this image, you can see the cable climb up along the left side of the frame. Those little specs are hikers making the slow progress to Half Dome's glorious summit. 24" x 36" poster available at www.joewestphoto.com. Follow the link below.

Cable beach is famous for its sunsets, not sunrises, but since I was in the pub for the former, a shot of a still fairly impressive example of the later will have to do.
Read more about the sunsets and moon-rises on my blog.

Juneau. The capital of Alaska. I came out on deck after being in the engine room all morning to the sight of a huge, beautiful mountain right next to us. So I vowed that I would go ashore at lunchtime to get a picture. I have some good ones of the cablecar (no idea how to spell this...) but I wanted the mountain in there too, to remember the awesome feeling of coming out from the dirty smelly bowels of the ship, to fresh air and beautiful scenery
