Old gristmill at Cades Cove. Still in operation. Smoky Mountain National Park, Tennessee.

This is the Cable Grist Mill at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains. Milling lay at the heart of the small community which inhabited Cades Cove from the 1820s to the 1940s. Built between 1865 and 1868, the mill was the economic core of Cades Cove and has been brought back into operation as an historic mill. Cable Mill is the only surviving original mill in the area and was restored in the early 1930s. Today, the mill is in operation daily between April and October and visitors can catch a glimpse of what life was like for Cade Coves’ early settlers by seeing it in action.

Macro Mondays: Cable

Foto: cable ferry Dieren The Netherlands

The cable ferry is a phenomenon that you still regularly encounter in our river country. A cable ferry is a fine example of the ingenuity of the former inhabitants.

If a river flows fast enough, you can ensure that the current pulls the boat to the other side. It is somewhat comparable to a kite with two strings that you can control. The cable ferry is recognizable by the cable to which it is attached, which is secured with an anchor in the middle of the river. Often, there are a few small boats to guide the cable.

Cable-stayed bridge across the Dnieper in Kiev

As a mountaineer and photographer, i say that adventure begins where you leave the beaten path.

The 1894 Cable Building at 611 Broadway near Houston (pronounced house-ton) St in Manhattan. The palazzo styled plant/building had offices for the former Broadway and Seventh Avenue Railroad Company. The four 32-foot winding-wheels that carried the cables that pulled the cable cars were housed in the basement of the building.1,000 horse power steam engines and 18 boilers were also in the basement. In order to isolate the vibration from the heavy machinery, the basement had to be dug 46-feet deep. The company had a fleet of 125 cable cars serving 100,000 passengers daily. The cable cars ran from Battery Park to 50th St along the above mentioned avenues. The Angelika Film Center is now in the basement of the building. The rest of it tenant offices. It's a really stunning building.I love the carved detail on the course band that's underneath those two rows of windows at the very top wikimapia.org/3638736/The-Cable-Building

I have a drawer stuffed with old, obsolete but may one day be useful cables. The image is about 70mm square. HMM and thanks for any views, faves and comments.

I messed with layers here to see how crystal sharp I could make the water. It's a technique that has promise I think.
