Even stuck at home with a sick kiddo, we did Valentine's Day in style. Not pictured: evidence of the Electra red moscato that was paired with the foie gras or the horseradsh crusted filet mignon that was paired with the 2014 Cab from Pride.
Happy Bokeh Wednesday! April 2, 2008
This was taken at the request of my husband. He even used his favorite wine glass for this. =)
I'm wondering how great this vintage will be. The 2005 and 2006 have been great, and I've got a bottle of reserva privada 2006 that I'm saving for a special occasion still.
2009 Knights Valley - actual foil, whole punch cork, lacking much of a nose, hints of oak conditioning, notes were there but this was otherwise tasteless.
2009 Standard - plastic shrink wrap 'foil', composite cork, do not mistake this for wine. artificial nose, chemically taste.
No big drinker here... but I do enjoy a nice glass of wine
now and then.
My son brought a particularly good cabernet sauvignon to a
dinner out (at The Capital Grille in Lombard, Illinois) with the
rest of the family last weekend. The meal and the whole
experience that evening was one of the best I've ever had...
please do yourself a favor and make a point to visit the
Capital Grille near you... but I digress. =)
It was a 2003 Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
The reviews are pretty strong... and words like 'berry, spicy,
fruit, black currant, drink now, other berries, currant, licorice,
rich, mocha' are used by those who try to describe what this
cab is all about. I guess... =)
All I know is that it was... superb... paired with a dry aged,
Kansas City bone-in sirloin. What a glass of wine!
What a meal! What an evening!
Thank you Eric (the son)... and The Capital Grille (the restaurant)!

1) Trius Brut VQA (not seen here)
Crisp, citrus; tiny bubbles. Nice palate cleanser.
2) Trius Riesling Dry 2007 VQA
Great brisk wine to help wipe away the creamy residue of the harvarti it was paired with. Light yellow in appearance, with pineapple and peach nose. Flavours were light mineral, citrus/grapefruit, white peach, with a background of mango (tropical) - due to the great growing environment Ontario experienced in 2007. Glen mentioned that this one is one of the best white wines in Ontario.
3) Andrew Peller Signature Series Chardonnay Sur Lie 2004 VQA
Limited availability.
We were told that the 'Sur Lie' means that this wine has a creamier mouth feel. This was paired with the brie. The wine was deep yellow in shade, while the nose had floral notes, yeasty, heavy on the vanilla and oak. The flavours were oaky, vanilla, butter, toasted cocoa and floral, and acidic.
4) Trius Merlot 2007
This was paired with the aged gouda, and were told this would be great with red meats (blood) too, as it pulls out all the tannins in the wine.
The wine had an even red colour, and smelled of brine and berries. It was very fruit forward with a hint of old oak barrels.
5) Andrew Peller Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 VQA
Darker appearance than the Trius Merlot. It was oaky, smelled of leather and fresh tobacco. This had a more tannic, tin-like taste.
6) Hillebrand Estates Showcase Merlot VQA 2004
Amazing with the Parmesan cheese, this was a dark red specimen that had a tinge of orange. The nose was a medium toast, oaky, with citrus undertones. The flavours were warm.
7) Hillebrand Estates Showcase Cabernet Sauvignon VQA 2004
Another dark red, hinting at orange specimen. The flavours were warm and slightly tannic.

I just want to thank everyone - my friends, contacts and passing visitors - who kindly take the time and trouble to view and sometimes comment on my images. It's always very much appreciated... so please accept this glass of wine, warming gently in front of the evening fire (it's my favourite goblet, by the way). Cheers! Sláinte! A votre sante!

HOT BARBECUE: Chili meets Erben wine
On June 19, 2015, the F. W. Langguth Erben winery from Traben-Trarbach moved the world of Erben wines from the Mosel to the Spree for an evening and celebrated the successful premiere of a new series of events with "Hot Barbecue". With the "Erben Tafelrunde", a series of pop-up events, the Langguth family business aims to bring its traditional brand closer to a young, urban audience in future. - Langguth's aim is to offer participants in the events an unusual, surprising brand experience around Erben wines that can be experienced with all the senses, thereby promoting the basis for an emotional bond.
The premiere took place at a location that is still considered an insider tip even in Berlin - an old crane house (Kranhaus Café) in Köpenick, located directly on the River Spree. Around 40 guests, including members of the growing "Erben Gemeinschaft" brand ambassador community and Berlin food and gourmet bloggers, were able to travel to and from the historic harbor on the solar-powered catamaran SOLON. True to the motto of the evening "Hot Barbecue: Chili meets Erben Wine", the program was designed as a culinary crowd-pairing experiment, in the course of which various chili sauces, presented by chili expert Felix Eichholtz from Pfefferhaus Berlin, were combined with various wines from the Erben range. These were accompanied by exquisite barbecue dishes, authentically prepared in the "smoker" by BBQ master Adam Ramirez from Texas from "The Pit - Real Texas Barbecue". In contrast to classic wine pairing, guests were served a selection of three heirloom wines per course at the crowd-pairing event. The idea behind crowd-pairing is not to let wine experts decide which food-wine combination goes best together, but to let the crowd decide by voting. The kick-off of the pop-up event series ended up being a complete success for the organizer and the participants.

The DNC brought the busiest day that Invesco Field has probably ever had. What a day. It was a day that I won't soon forget. I wish I would have been able to watch more of the event, but I had a job to do. Today was no different.
After my "playing hooky" the yesterday, I came into a newly stocked warehouse, which I was not expecting at all. I went through feelings of anger and self disappointment, but that didn't last for long as there was an entire stadium to stock. My crew has been reduced to five people and only four showed. Thankfully we had around ten temps for the day. I did my best to place people in certain tasks for the day. Before I knew it, things had sped to pace I have never seen before there or at any previous job.
I started at 7am, temps arrived around 9am and at Noon we had a crew from the Dallas Convention Center (who have been here all week) come and lend assistance and who does the Director of Operations have them answer to? Me of course. So I had around twenty people looking for me to know what to do. So I did my best and being the leader everyone at work wants me to be. Still unfamiliar territory, but I wasn't about to give in and say I couldn't do it.
The speed at which time flew by was insane. The Dallas crew, which included people far above my rank and pay kicked so much ass. I wish I had people that worked that hard, fast and efficient. It took 12 hours, but we took an empty stadium and made it ready for game day tomorrow. It's not a Broncos game, just the CU vs CSU game, but it might as well be a Broncos game due to it's fan turn out.
My day went smoother than any other day I've had at this job and I shined more than I have ever done. So here I am enjoy a couple glasses of wine (and some cocktails too).
Tomorrow is going to be easy and then I have two days off to enjoy. Monday is dinner and wine at Cru and Tuesday is Yelp Denver's Elite event. I'm actually going to bowl for the first time that night. I'm not worried about embarrassing myself, it's about about having fun. Quite a difference I've made in the past few months, let alone the last few years.
I can't wait for the day when I a behind a desk again doing computer work.
