Today I have taken in Paul's Challange and asked Steve to give it a go. :-)

For the Ming Thein B&W challenge: No facebook, comments on the blog under the name Klas (email j u n k (a) k . flum.net

This image is my entry to the Ming Thein B&W Challenge. Inspired by Mings writings I decided to not pick the best of my old stuff or hunt through my archive for something that would be suitable for B&W conversion.

This photo is taken for the challenge. Lightning and composition was planned from the beginning and I had a clear(ish) picture in mind of what I wanted the finished black and white picture to look like.

The result may not be the most stunning picture in the world and I have no hope of winning the challenge, but it's been a great learning experience and that's much more important.

Strobist info:

A more detailed lighting description will follow later.

Three speedlights have been used. One big keylight, a combined kicker/backlight and a improvised strip to get the highlight in the vase.

Since this was destined for B&W, I wanted as much texture as possible from the flowers and the leaves. The vase is secondary so no contours, but it's my hope that the highlight together with the refraction gives enough indication of the form and takes away any impression of the tulips hanging in the air.

Day 3 of the daily B&W challenge. Today: Coffee Currency

Sorry - it was cold and wet today, and I had to force myself to go to Starbucks ;-)

The B&W Challenge, is like a chain letter with cameras. Participants are required to *capture and post* five black and white pictures over five days and, with each posting, nominate a person to do the same. Notice the *capture and post* bit. That means exposing the image on the day you sharet it...no digging through your 100 TB hard drive and choosing your best ever shots of the past two decades. Get out there and take spontaneous pictures, damnit!!

Today I nominate Leslie Jacobs!

I have been nominated by Bella Lisa to do the B&W challenge for 5 days - this is #3. My third nominee is Elisabeth Liddell.

Today's photo is one of the castle tower that stands on the Northern edge of the village near the church and manor house.

The site may also have been the location of the pre-Conquest manor of Earl Morcar, close to the possible site of the suggested early monastic foundation. By the time of the Domesday Book the estate was in the hands of the King, and subsequently it passed to the Kyme family, and they held it as a demesne manor until it was acquired by the Umfraville family.

This slender fourteenth century tower is all that remains of the castle which was built between 1310 and 1381, it was surrounded by a moat, which still survives as an earthwork. It was built in coursed limestone ashlar. for Sir Gilbert de Umfraville, who

was descended from a relative of William the Conquerer. What remains today is a 4-storey, square tower 77 ft high, with square projecting stair tower at the south-east corner which rises slightly higher than the main tower. It has a deeply chamfered plinth and two chamfered upper floor bands, topped with chamfered battlements. The south, entrance front, bears scars on the ground and first floors of the later attached house which has since been removed. The floor of the first floor room is reputedly patterned; hence its name 'The Chequered Chamber' though this is not at present visible. No floors, ceilings or roofs survive higher up, though evidence for them

does survive. The circular stone spiral staircase survives intact, with at the top a central newel post which rises as a colonnette to support the panelled vault above. The lower contains no fireplaces or guard robes, and it was presumably intended purely for

defence, it stands within a large moated site. The attached house was demolished between 1720 and 1725, when chimney-pieces were bought by Mr Chaplin for Blankney Hall. This tower is the earliest of a series of fortified towers built in this part of Lincolnshire, it is the only one built of stone, the later ones like Tattershall Castle, The Tower on the Moor at Woodhall Spa, the Hussey Tower at Boston and Rochford Tower at Skirbeck are all built of brick.

I have also been challenged to take part in the B&W challenge to post one mono image per day for five consecutive days. This is my second image.

On each day I must choose another contact on Flicker to do the same. Can I ask if tobes987 (Toby Stokes) would be interested in joining the challenge.

The volcanic Aeolian Islands are in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily, named after the demigod of the winds Aeolus.

The largest island is Lipari. The other islands include Vulcano and Stromboli.

December 2014 1 of 5 day B&W challenge (by Bobbi - link in second comment)

Just post one B&W image each of five days. They can be archive or new shots. Just put them together in one place, tagged, and the idea is to nominate someone each of the five days. I have invited Hapsnaps today :-)

While out with my mentoring group we practiced some panning shots. While not a stunning example, I'm reasonably happy with the results, plus it counts towards my B&W challenge.

I have been nominated by Mervyn Head to do the B&W challenge for 5 days - this is #1. My third nominee is RogerReg

Colin in the snow. A blue roan cocker spaniel seems an obvious model for a black and white photo.

Two different people tagged me to do the Black & White Challenge. I will be posting seven different B&W images taken one a day last week.

It feels a bit chain letterish to me to challenge seven other people, so while I decided to have a go myself, I will not be naming other people to ask them to do the same. Feel free to join in though if you want to have a go.

I have been nominated by Mervyn Head to do the B&W challenge for 5 days - this is #1. My fourth nominee is moroseduck.

This shot was taken on one of my neighbours fields alongside the drive to out home. The sheep use it to scratch their various itches. The wool left was streaming out in a robust Northwesterly.

The start of my BW Challenge, thats currently circulating round the social media sites. The idea is you take a black and white photo everyday for 5 days, and then nominate someone else to do the same. Me and my friends have really taken to it.

I'm going to try and have a theme running through my five images. This is the first of them. Enjoy.

The back door, RUN TO THE BACK DOOR; the voice in my head was screeching at me. Someone was trying to get into the house, the door knob was rattling and the door was shaking. I knew I had to get out of the house, my only chance was the back door. I grabbed my boots and ran towards the back door. The sound of someone or something kicking the door echoed throughout the house. I turned to look, as I did this, I stepped on the dog's squeaky toy! Damn dog, he has ripped the squeakers out of every other toy in the house except this one. I kept moving towards the door. I slipped on my boots as quickly as I could, I quietly tried to open the back door. It wouldn't open. I was yanking on the door knob not realizing it was locked. I noticed the cast iron frying pan on the kitchen table, It was very heavy, I knew it would help me to defend myself. I figured out that I needed to unlock the door, I slipped out the door. I was outside and safe, OR SO I THOUGHT. I turned to run to the neighbor's house and this is what I saw. I let out a blood curdling scream......

This is part of the B&W Challenge, I am nominating neurosheep to complete this challenge.

The howling coming from the bedroom was terrifying. I ran to the bedroom, terrified of what I would find but I had to open the door. As I opened the door, Buddy who was sleeping, woke up with a start.

"What's wrong Buddy?"

"I had the worst dream mama, you were being chased all over the house but some demonic thing."

Oh baby, it was just a nightmare, I told you not to eat so much bacon after supper or you would have bad dreams."

"You're right mama, can you sleep with me tonight?"

"Of course, roll over."
