My house is built on hallowed ground and land that was reclaimed from the sea. It suits the essence of me and calms my spirit to walk in my garden knowing that it was left for many years, an abandoned place until the house was built and the stony and sandy ground where nothing much grew except ancient plants; wild flowers that blew in on the wind. Then someone planted trees from all four corners of the earth and plants that should not have survived began to flourish as if the roots of these trees breathed new life into the earth. There have been only a few guardians of this magical place and I am honoured to be the current guardian. At first I tried to plant what I liked; tried to enforce my will on this holy place, but in time I realised something … you cannot force a garden to grow; to bend to your will. A garden evolves slowly over time of it's own accord mostly and we, as guardians, should allow it to guide us. In this way I have found peace and happiness here and I embrace the changes of my ever-evolving garden. I seldom buy anything new to plant. I wait for the winds; I wait for the seasons; I witness the changes and I grow and evolve as a person in much the same way as my garden does. It is a joy to anticipate each new season; each new wind; and to see what appears. There is always something unexpected appearing. Life is full of surprises; of serendipitous moments. I wonder sometimes about these old trees. I think whoever planted them was guided and perhaps the garden welcomed the dappled shade on what once was a desert. Certainly I feel myself sometimes directed to introduce a new species. Perhaps I am guided also by a hand that I cannot fathom. We are not meant to understand everything. If we allow ourselves to just be, we may find, without effort, how our path unfolds with relative ease. I have found this to be the case. All those years of struggle and now I can just let go … it really is that easy to be content.
p.s. I was compelled reluctantly to remove a Laburnum tree that I thought might be harmful to my cats. I had always wanted such a tree with it's beautiful yellow flowers … but in it's place a Forsythia grew with a profusion of yellow flowers. I did not plant it! Magic? Yes, I believe so! : 0)

I wander in the wilderness
my garden of delights
a jungle by the turquoise sea
a land so flat; the moon at night
shines down with silvery fingers
and touches the ground with magical spells
and come the breaking dawn of morning
all ills are banished and all is well
the dark and mysterious creatures
who loiter in the dusk
emerge in brilliant sunshine
with all-seeing eyes; an elephant tusk
protrudes and scythes the longest grasses
parts the meadow like the ancient sea
leaving behind a trail of crimson
flowers of sorrel and sweet harmony
reigns here as the King of the Jungle
seeks solace in the afternoon siesta
ignores the urban sounds outside
these walls; these trees; a back-firing Fiesta
alerts the songbirds from their idle rest
they flitter and flutter from tree to tree
and as I lie within the striped hammock
I swing and sing low to the sound of the breeze
a mist arises suddenly; springs up from the sea
settles a cloak; an air of mystery
around the shoulders of myself and the limbs
of the ancient trees as I sip my Pimms
I can barely keep my eyes from closing
the warmth of the air so cloying and deep
I find myself falling gently to the humming of bees
as I lapse now into a soundless sleep
I awake to find the blue sky black
lit by a billion diamonds or more
an infinite guide is laid out before me
the wisdom of ancient celestial stars of yore
some say when we see them
they have already died
long ago before our ancestors
what does this imply
do our eyes deceive us
or are we psychic or perhaps
we are more knowledgeable than we realise
all we need falls easily into our laps
but still we often ignore
the instincts that are given
override them; divide them
dilute them; we're driven
to only see clearly to the end of our noses
we fail to stop often to smell the scent of the roses
take stock; stand still
absorb the nature of all living things
for in this garden I discovered
nature brings happiness and happiness brings
peace of mind; plentiful bounty
the sweetest fruits of the earth
the love that will bind us
circumnavigate the world's girth
here I find every day all that I need
the flora; the fauna; all that set seed
and I've no desire to be anywhere else
as much as I desire to be here
in this garden full of Heaven
there is love; there is goodness that I hold dear
from the humblest of creatures
find the beauty in a fly
sing so loud like a blackbird
view the world through a child's eyes.

Coe Hall was built for English born William R. Coe and his wife Mai between 1918 and 1921, by the New York City architects, Walker & Gillette,
It was designed to look like an Elizabethan country house,
Built in April 1974 by EMD for the Soo Line as their SOO 799, the 2k horsepower GP38-2 takes a break in the SOO's downtown Fond du Lac yard ten years later as their 4409.
Built as Générale de Banque, Mons, Belgium.
Design (1969): by unknown architect.
Restoration (2021): A&G Atelier d’architecture.
Now: Rosa Parks Building Université de Mons.
The Japanese Tower was built in 1904 nearby the Royal Park of Laeken for King Léopold II. It is now part of the ''Museums of the Far East''.

In the distant right, Our Lady in Temse is a Gothic and neo-Gothic church with a Baroque tower from 1721, built on foundation dating around 770, partly rebuilt in 1886-1888 and restored between 1978 and 1994. Listed in 1983.
Further right, Temse City Hall was built in 1905 in the eclectic style with a 31 m high belfry.

Built between 1892 and 1897 during the time of the Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen (1870–1918), the church was designed for the Lutheran members of the Imperial German garrison stationed in Strasbourg.
Built in 1904 this abandoned schoolhouse is located in a field near The Dalles on Japanese Hollow Road. Back then there was a group of Japanese immigrants who lived on the roads end, thus, how it got it's name. Also known as Eightmile Schoolhouse.
Built on a disused rail corridor, The Goods Line in Ultimo is Sydney’s equivalent of Manhattan’s High Line – a strategic pedestrian connection through unique green spaces in the inner city.
Extending from the end of Central Station’s Devonshire St Tunnel to Darling Harbour, The Goods Line links key landmarks along the ‘cultural ribbon’ on the southern fringe of the Sydney CBD. These landmarks include UTS, Chinatown, the Powerhouse Museum and the ABC.
Each week thousands of university students, workers, visitors and local residents make use of the elevated city park, which offers a variety of leafy and relaxed outdoor environments along the route through the UTS campus between Central Station and Darling Harbour.

Built on the French Gothic style the green turreted Dunfermline City Chambers in Bridge Street was opened in1897 replacing the Old Town House which was completed in 1771. This photo was taken from Dunfermline Abbey churchyard.
Built in 1920s, this square building covers a whole city block with a large court yard within. It houses world's largest spice market.
Built in 1646 by Lama Zhabdrung Nawang Namgyal and strategically located to thwart Tibetan incursions into the rest of the country, this Dzong became one of Bhutan’s strongest and most important fortresses.
The name “Ringpung Dzong” literally means “the fortress of the heap of jewels”.
Built on location for the filming of Superman returns, this barn remains (much to the delight of photographers) on a property in the Liverpool Plains in NSW Australia.
Built in the late 1860, the bridge suffered severe flood damage in 2020. A 2.6 million dollar grant from the Commonwealth of Kentucky enabled Flemming County to restore the Hillsboro and the Ringo Mill's covered bridges. Master covered bridge builder Arnold M Graton started construction but died at 87 yrs old and a relative Tim Dansereau finished the projects. A reopening ceremony was held in October, 2025.
Happisburgh, an old Viking settlement, where they sacked the original church before this on was built 1086.
Built in July 1952, OSR 383 is celebrating almost 73 years young and still hauling freight in 2025. Quite the impressive feat, but a lot of credit should be directed at the Ontario Southland employees who work tirelessly to keep their fleet going. In the photo above, ex-SOO 383 takes the solo lead of the Woodstock Job heading west through Beachville easily handling 10 cars on the drawbar.

Illicit rubbish dumping is out of control across the UK, perhaps our new Prime Minister could get the ball rolling on that one without making his rich friends even richer :-).

Built for the third round of the RogueOlympics on Roguebricks. After seeing this week’s theme was “Bon apetit”, I knew I had to get an entry in – though I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to build. Then I had an idea for how to make the radish slices, and the rest of the build came together from there.

Built for the Colossal Castle Contest, Manor category. There's a full interior via pull out rooms: dining hall, armory, storage room, barracks and bedroom. The doors and trapdoor are functional.

Originally built as a private residence, said to have been occupied in 1795 by Benedictine monks expelled from France.
The building was licensed from the early 1800s, at least since 1817. Listed in Bagshaw's Directory of 1850. Known by various names, Tranmere Inn & Ferry House, Castle Hotel and became the Royal Castle by 1870. Acquired by Threlfalls brewery in mid 1890s and selling Whitbread beers into the 1980s.
Later known as Hotel California, Mr Davidson's Bar then Revolver before closure in 2018.
After closure the site was abandoned, vandalised then fire bombed on two successive nights. The property is now unsafe and photos of the interior show substantial damage.

Built in 1731-1736. Situated in Radishchev's Family Estate Museum, Radishchevo village, Kuznetsk District, Penza Region, Russia.
It was built from plinth and stone up to 1156. It is a cross-domed temple, which has an architectural type unique to Old Russian art. The central volume of the building has the shape of an equilateral cross, originally the temple had a distinctly cross-shaped outside. It was painted from top to bottom in the 30s and 40s of the 12th century by unknown masters from Greece. The uniqueness of the frescoes is in high artistic quality, in a thoughtful iconographic concept, and also in the fact that almost the whole complex of paintings has been preserved. In style they do not have chronological analogues in Russia and resemble Byzantine mosaics in some temples of Sicily of the same XII century.

Built in 1943, Piper J-3C-65 Cub G-BDEY was built as a L-4H Grasshopper and issued with the United States military serial 43-30238. When production ended in 1947, 19,888 Piper Cubs had been built. G-BDEY is seen at Gloucestershire Airport on 7th January 2024.
Built in 1963 and now withdrawn from service, this Westland Wessex HC.2 XR498 in No. 22 Squadron search and rescue yellow was in the static display at RAF Cosford air show on 11th June 2023.
Built at the end of the 10th century by Don Sancho Abarca de Navarra, the castle of Hondarribia always fulfilled an important military and defensive function on the Bidasoa. It is, in fact, that function that explains its architecture: a large mass of solid ashlar, of great height and with hardly any gaps, covered by a large barrel vault also made of stone. Although the site of important episodes and the site of royal guests, the castle was in terrible condition after the last wars of 1794 and 1808. Privately owned and faced with the possibility of passing into foreign hands, the town hall bought it at the beginning of the 20th century.
Built in 1969 as Penn Central #810, a self powered "Metroliner EMU", Amtrak #9634 brings train #450 into Meriden on a cold and damp March morning. 54 years of roaming the American passenger rail network.

Built in 1898 by Joseph J. Daniels, this Burr Arch Truss bridge is 165 feet in length. This bridge spans Big Walnut Creek west of Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana and is also known as the Shoppell Covered Bridge. It is the third of nine bridges I found in Putnam County on my recent covered bridge excursion.

Built between 1889 to 1895 on several farm tracts totaling about 2,000 acres that had been purchased by George Washington Vanderbilt II for the purpose of constructing this house. The chosen site located in Asheville NC permitted G.W. Vanderbilt a view of the surrounding mountains. At 178,926 square feet, Biltmore house is the largest privately owned home in the United States, It features 250 rooms, including 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces.
