The defensive structure that was already present when the town was founded by the Romans was integrated over time with towers and bastions. The Rocchetta (small castle) built by Egidio Albornoz in the 14th century is still visible, together with the Rocca (castle) of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta that was added in 1450.

The current structure of the monument is due to Giovanni della Rovere, Prince of Senigallia, and son-in-law of Federico III da Montefeltro, the Duke of Urbino. It was the Duke Federico who offered Giovanni the best architects of the time: Luciano Laurana and Baccio Pontelli. The works started in 1478 with the purpose of adapting the castle to the new defensive needs. In 1503 the Rocca was conquered by Cesare Borgia, the author of the famous massacre carried out in Senigallia and described by Niccolò Machiavelli.

Rocca Roveresca is a unique monument because it was not only a fortress, but also a noble palace, and the seat of an artillery academy founded by Guidubaldo della Rovere in 1533. After the extinction of the ducal dynasty, when the town returned under the domain of the Church in 1631, the castle was used as a papal prison and an orphanage.

Today it hosts art exhibitions and prestigious cultural events.

On a visit to our native Suffolk I noticed this house built into the city wall. I should have loved to have a peek inside.

Mistreated Modernism.

A gorgeous mid-century building being let down by those that just don't care.

The Lake Placid Club built the first ski jump on this site in 1920, using the hillside itself as the jump surface. The jump was referred to as the Intervales 35-meter jump. On February 21. 1921, the first competition was held at this site, drawing 3,000 spectators. The record jump for the day was 124 feet, set by Antony Maurer. In 1923, the jump was enlarged to fifty meters, and in 1927, a new steel tower was built, raising the jump to 60 meters. In 1928, the tower was raised to 75 meters; this was the tower used for the 1932 Winter Olympic Games. In 1977, the old tower was demolished to make way for new 70 and 90-meter jumps, used for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. In 1994, the landing hills were re-graded to bring the jumps into compliance with current rules, and increasing their height to 90 and 120 meters 170

Built in the 14th Century, St Michael's church is the oldest building in Betws-y- Coed. The church houses the fine stone effigy of Gruffydd ap Dafydd Goch, a Norman font, and many interesting features. Displays in the church tell its history, and the church yard with its majestic yew trees makes a tranquil resting place.

Built in 1879, Oriel Chambers is a Grade II listed building which, since 2006, has housed the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation. It is located in the city of Kingston upon Hull.

With the California Gold Rush, settlements sprung up rapidly where none existed before. French Corral was one of these. In these hastily constructed camps though, fires were an ongoing problem, often razing settlements to the ground, many more than once.

Banks ended up needing to engage stonemasons to build fireproof buildings to gain the confidence of their customers. This Wells Fargo Express is an excellent example of these fireproof constructions, not just the switch from wood to brick, but also the iron doors and shutters they used. Wells Fargo pretty much had a presence in every mining community in California, with not just banking, but before railroads reached California, freight and express services too.

In many cases, their building remains the only real evidence that a gold rush town even existed. This one would have sat beside hotels, saloons, a hardware store, and a post office, all made from wood or canvas. Now, it stands largely alone, like a farm building rather than part of a town. Appropriately, I took this picture during fire season and the entire sky is a haze from grass fires close by.

Wells Fargo was founded in 1852, and this building was constructed the very next year.

This house is still inhabited.

If I won the lottery I'd keep it as original as possible.

Similarly built to Mercat Crosses found across Scotland, the Culross iteration dates back to the 17th century. Though rebuilt in 1902 to preserve its integrity, the cross marks the heart of the town. Its cubical head has four distinctive sides, including the Culross coat of arms, the initials and coat of arms of its restorer, and a monogram for King James VI, alongside a unicorn – Scotland’s national animal.

Built in 1974, the sign became known as the “gateway to the Cross”, featuring on music videos, TV, famous photographs and as a landmark meeting point.

Considered the largest billboard in the Southern Hemisphere at 41 metres long and 13 metres high, the sign is comprised of two sides – the right being the traditional red and white Coca-Cola sign and the left being a flex-faced sign that’s used to display the latest Coke campaigns.

One of my attempts at the "Macro Mondays" theme "Treasured".

While I initially thought I wouldn't have a lot of options for this theme (because I don't really 'treasure' a lot of old items - apart from my lenses...) it turned out there were a few after all. This is an old perforator that belonged to my wife's grandfather. I don't know the exact age but it could have been made anywhere from the 30s to the 50s and it still works perfectly fine even though it was probably used heavily every day for decades in it's earlier years. It's really well constructed, quite heavy and mounted on a beautiful wooden plate. It might not have got any monetary value but for us it certainly is a kind of treasure nonetheless!

The longer side of the image is around 6.5 cm!

BTW. for anyone interested in these things: This is taken with a lens probably the same age than the perforator! The Perigraphe is a really interesting lens design from the French manufacturer "Som Berthiot" and while it is certainly not a fast lens (wide open at F 14) I feel like it has a really nice rendering and it features a wide image circle!

Shot with a Som Berthiot "Perigraphe 90 mm F 14" lens on a Canon EOS R5.

Homebuilt in 1956 (one year after the production ended) from new and used spare parts.

The marbachsee was originally built between 1978 and 1982 by the Mümling Water Association, which operates the reservoir, for flood control purposes, but has officially also served as a recreational area since 1986.

The primary reason for building the Marbach Reservoir was flood protection for the towns and villages downstream. Because the Marbach stream has a relatively large catchment area, the Mümling's discharge capacity could easily be exceeded after periods of rain or snowmelt. Since the dam's completion, the Marbach's flow into the Mümling can be controlled.

A small hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 80 kW was attached to the Marbach Reservoir. At full capacity, the Marbach Reservoir is the largest body of still water in the Odenwald region.

Another reason for constructing the Marbach Reservoir was its use for recreation and leisure. Activities possible there include swimming, boating, windsurfing, sailing, fishing, and hiking.

The Marbach Reservoir is divided into three sections from west to east:

"Bird sanctuary" with a nature reserve island; officially not a bird or nature reserve

Bathing area with a beach, sunbathing lawn, and bathing islands

Surfing and sailing area for boats with a sail area of up to 3.5 m².

Built by the British in the year 1896.

Built in 1931, the lighthouse continues the use of a fifth order Fresnel lens that was first used in 1891, in the original lighthouse. The foreground pale brown is due to the shallow but rough water, kicking up sand, while the deep blue is deeper water.
