The head of the world's largest axe (built in 1991) in Nackawic, New Brunswick, Canada.

The axe stands 15 meters (49 feet) tall, with a blade that is 7 meters (23 feet) wide and weighs over 55 tons. The handle extends another 50 feet into the air. The axe was designed and built by B.I.D. Canada Ltd (of Woodstock, New Brunswick) and was presented to the town on May 11, 1991, to commemorate its selection as the Forestry Capital of Canada for that year. The axe is a significant landmark and a tribute to the forestry industry in the region.

In 1991, Nackawic was designated the Forestry Capital of Canada. The head of the axe contains a time capsule embedded within it.

New Brunswick seems to have a "thing" for creating and featuring the world's longest or largest structures, both as a source of pride and of course for tourism.

Auburn built some of America’s best known and most stylish cars in the late 1920s and 1930s. The 851 Speedster, powered by a supercharged Lycoming engine, was introduced for 1935. The boat-tailed body was the work of Duesenberg designer Gordon Buerhig. All Auburn Speedsters were tested to over 100mph by the record breaker Ab Jenkins, as recorded by the autographed plate on the dashboard.

Entrepreneur Errett Lobban Cord rescued Auburn from obscurity in 1924. He acquired Duesenberg and the engine manufacturer Lycoming in 1926, before creating the new Cord marque in late 1929. Auburn was one of only two American car manufacturers to actually increase their sales figures during the great depression of 1931. After that Auburn’s sales dropped and the 851 was to be the company’s swansong, with production ending in late 1936. Cord and Duesenberg ceased production soon after.

Built in 1947, the Sabine Theatre is most likely the 1947 project for the Southern Amusement Company that is found in this list of drawings by Lake Charles, Louisiana, architect John M. Gabriel. It was acquired by the town of Many in the mid-1990’s and is now used for live theatre by the Sabine Parish Players, as well as musical performances, occasional movies, and other community events. It was also featured in the “downtown scenes” in the movie The Man in The Moon.

Loved the symmetry of this living room built-in. There is actually a tv behind the mirror. The glass is supposed to adjust when the tv is turned on, but I couldn't figure out how to work it so I left it alone before I broke something. :) If I could re-do this shot, I would have simplified the objects on the glass table and maybe just leave the orchids in front of either side of the fireplace.

Mostly ambient light with a little touch of strobe bounced off the ceiling in the right side adjacent room. Flashpoint 360 Streaklight at around 1/8th power I believe.

Built for John Eugene DuBignon in 1884. Architect unknown. Jekyll Island, Glynn County GA.

Built by Levi and Elizabeth Lukens at this site. They were Quakers who purchased 1,000 acres along Caesar's Creek and had a grist and saw mill. Built of beech logs the cabin measured 18'X20'. Later a lean to kitchen and siding were added. Needs some extensive work as some of the beech logs are rotted through and causing the corner to slip away from the cabin.

Built in the closing years of the 16th century the Rialto bridge is the oldest and most elaborate of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice. It has become one of the architectural icons and top tourist attractions of the city. A centre ramp and two side ramps lead up to a central portico. On either side of the centre ramp are rows of covered shops which occupy some of the City’s most expensive real estate.

If you are coming from Piazza San Marco* and cross over the bridge going west you will find yourself in the Rialto Market with its fresh fruit and vegetable stalls, fish vendors and rows of expensive boutique shops.

Built in 1865 in Victorian Carpenter Gothic style, the former Holy Trinity Church of England can be found on a rise along Morses Creek Road in the little alpine town of Wandiligong. Built of weatherboard it is a charming example of wooden churches built all over Australia in little country towns. Unusually, it features Elizabethan loopy bargeboard gingerbreading. It is unpretentious and looks like a picturesque country village church, nestled into its surrounds which are full of tall elm trees and surrounded by a pretty white picket fence. The church was last used as a place of worship in the mid 1960s. Originally containing rather ornate stained glass which has subsequently been replaced with plain glass windows, the former Holy Trinity Church of England has since been converted into a residence, named McKenzie. Although an extension with skylights has been put at the rear of the building, the designs are sympathetic with the original 1865 building and are not visible from Morses Creek Road.

Victorian Carpenter Gothic style emerged where timber was the mail building material or where transport and portability were considerations, and most buildings were simplified versions of Victorian Gothic buildings, although some did have very beautifully ornamental wooden gingerbreading and fretwork.

Wandiligong is a town in north-eastern Victoria in the alpine region around 330 kilometres from Melbourne. Established in the 1850s as part of the Victorian Gold Rush, Wandiligong became a hub for many gold miners, including a large Chinese community. At its peak, the town was home to over two thousand inhabitants and boasted shops, churches, a public library, halls and even an hotel. Much has changed since those heady days of the gold rush, and the picturesque town nestled in a valley and built around the Morses Creek, is now a sleepy little town full of picturesque houses which are often let to visitors to the area. The whole town is registered with the National Trust of Australia for its historic landscape and buildings of historic value.

Had a great shoot with Miles, Christina, Steve, and Tim recently. Ryan was able to join us in the morning but couldn't stick around for the second half of the day. It was great to get out and shoot again, haven't done enough of that lately.

This post is a bit tongue in cheek, though I have to confess I've thought this way myself many times.

Hope you all had a happy Memorial Day Weekend!

#410

Built between 1886 and 1890. Kuznetsk City, Penza Region, Russia.

Built as Milwaukee Road SD40-2 #3026, Maine Central #609 (Pan Am) leads HLCX #7014 and train POED passed a loaded coal train with CN #2445 third out. Three locomotives that likely would never have met if it weren’t for the eclectic group of SD40’s Pan Am purchased, and the run through power agreement they have with Norfolk Southern. Most notable out of the three is the #609 which, in late 1975, was painted in Milwaukee Roads 1776 Centennial paint scheme and renumbered to MILW #156. After its long life and retirement on Pan Am, it was purchased by a private company and has been renumbered to BUGX #156. Possible centennial repaint in the future?

Built in 1838, second oldest railway bridge still in service in Germany (the oldest being the Brücke Kornhain between Dresden and Leipzig). It was built for the Taunus-Eisenbahn between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden via Höchst - itself one of the very first railways in Germany - renovated a couple of times, but never destroyed. Second roll that looks like it's been taking up the patterns of the backing paper... I must have been storing exposed rolls too long.

Gdańsk Town Hall

Ratusz Głównego Miasta. Oddział Muzeum Gdańska

Gdańsk Main Town Hall is a historic Ratusz located in the Gdańsk Main City borough of Śródmieście. It is one of the finest examples of the Gothic-Renaissance historic buildings in the city, built at the intersection of Ulica Długa and Długi Targ, in the most popular part of Gdańsk. The Main Town Hall in Gdańsk houses the History Museum of the City of Gdańsk.

The Main Town Hall in Gdańsk is located on Ulica Długa, part of the Royal Route.

The oldest fragments of the town hall come from 1327 to 1336 - the building was then much smaller in size, which led to its expansion in the subsequent years.

The first major expansion of the building began in 1378. The tower was complete in the years of 1486-1488; the building of which was led by Henryk Hetzel. The tower was completed by Michał Enkinger, with a high dome in 1492.

Heavily damaged in WW2, with the loss of the top of the tower, it was carefully repaired and reconstructed, largely complete by 1952.

Built for the golden age of rail transport the imposing station was officially opened on November 2, 1919. Designed by the Winnipeg firm of Pratt & Ross (where Canadian Northern was based) they also created the magnificent Electric Railway Chambers in that city. For their west coast landmark: they used a more restrained neo-classical design than the CPR's downtown station.

Built for the LUGOLA community display window at the Glendale Lego store.

Built in 1888, this Queen Anne-style house was built for Herman Weinhardt, president of the Niemann and Weinhardt Table Company and a West Park Commissioner. The house is clad in red brick with a gabled roof, exposed rafter tails, decorative sawn wooden trim, a side porch with turned columns, a shed roof, decorative sawn brackets, spindlework, and a sawn balustrade, front feature windows with decorative stone and patterned brickwork surrounds, a front entrance porch with brick archways and columns, a rough-hewn battered stone base, scalloped wooden shingle cladding at the front gable, and decorative cresting and finials at the roof. The building is a contributing structure in the Wicker Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and designated a Chicago Landmark in 1991.

Built in 1108-1113, St. Michael's Cathedral was of particular importance for the people of Kiev, because it was dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the heavenly patron of Kyiv.

St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery is a functioning monastery in Kyiv. The monastery is located on the right bank of the Dnieper River on the edge of a bluff northeast of the Saint Sophia Cathedral. The site is located in the historic administrative Uppertown and overlooks the city's historical commercial and merchant quarter, the Podil neighbourhood.

Originally built in the Middle Ages by the Kievan Rus' ruler Sviatopolk II Iziaslavych, the monastery comprises the Cathedral itself, the Refectory of St. John the Divine, built in 1713, the Economic Gates, constructed in 1760 and the monastery's bell tower, which was added c.1716–1719. The exterior of the structure was rebuilt in the Ukrainian Baroque style in the 18th century while the interior remained in its original Byzantine style. The original cathedral was demolished by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s, but was reconstructed and opened in 1999 following Ukrainian independence in 1991.

Built along the northern side of the former 1820's toll road these are clearly part of the city's outward expansion during the later Victorian boom times of the cycle and engineering industry, and were where middle management might have lived, the upper-most floors being the servants quarters, though by the 1950's that standard of living would have been long gone and indeed the houses would start to be subdivided by landlords into flats and bedsits (with the bed room sharing the sitting room) as Coventrys population outgrew the available housing stock and High Rise flats where seen as the answer.

Built between 1900 and 1902 to designs by W.Kromhout and H.G. Jansen in the Berlage style, the legendary American Hotel on Leidseplein with its monumental façade is an important example of architectural Art Nouveau.

In 1927-1928 an expansion was added by G.J. Rutgers.

Its outer graciousness extends to the interior which still feature original stained glass windows, and vanities lined with elegant granite surface.

Both the expansion and the café are National Heritage sites.
