York has, since Roman times, been defended by walls of one form or another. To this day, substantial portions of the walls remain, and York has more miles of intact wall than any other city in England. They are known variously as York City Walls, the Bar Walls and the Roman walls though this last is a misnomer as very little of the extant stonework is of Roman origin, and the course of the wall has been substantially altered since Roman times. The walls are generally 13 feet (4 m) high and 6 feet (1.8 m) wide. They are the longest town walls in England.

La Salve is a quarter in the 2nd district of the city of Bilbao, Spain. It gains its name from the fact that sailors, returning from sea, would first see the tower of the Basilica of Begoña at this point as ships returned up the river Nervión, which runs through the city. According to folklore, they would start praying to the Virgin Begoña, the patron saint of the region, thanking her for protecting them during their time at sea.

Today, the main landmark of the area is La Salve Bridge, popular name for the Princes of Spain suspension bridge, built in the 1970s to provide a northern access over the river to the city. This bridge gained popularity when the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was built right under it, literally merging its structure into the museum's.

What's happening behind the dark bricks of Hotel Richmond in Tomintoul, Cairngorms National Park, Scotland?

The Assembly Hall is in the neo-gothic building situated directly East of Edinburgh Castle. With twin turrets forking above the skyline it is clearly visible as you climb up the Mound.

The mid-19th century hall is equally impressively with its huge vaulted ceilings and spacious courtyard. With its coats of arms, Victorian portrait paintings, and wooden panelling it harks back to a different era.

The Assembly Hall is the annual meeting place of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Dating back to the 14th century, The Shambles was historically a street of butchers' shops. The name "Shambles" is believed to come from the Anglo-Saxon word "fleshammels," meaning shelves or benches where meat was displayed. The overhanging buildings and narrow street were designed to protect the meat from sunlight and provide shade. Hooks used by butchers to hang meat are still visible on some buildings today. The street is mentioned in the Domesday Book, indicating its long history.

Llantysilio Church near Llangollen, Denbighshire, North Wales, sits on uprising land from the banks of the river Dee close to the local beauty spot of the Horseshoe Falls and source of water for the Llangollen canal. It is dedicated to St Tysilio who lived in the 7th century.

It was built in the 15th Century and then restored and modified by the German born Charles Beyer, one of the prominent engineers of the Victorian Era, and noted philanthropist, who died in 1876 whilst at residence at nearby Llantysilio Hall, only months after moving into his new mansion house, which he had just built and fitted out. He was buried in the church yard in the grounds of his 700-acre Llantysilio Hall estate. His gravestone of Aberdeen granite weighs over 2 tonnes.

St Giles' Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is the principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh.

The oldest parts of the building are four massive central pillars, often said to date from 1124, although there is very little evidence to this effect. In 1385 the building suffered a fire and was rebuilt in the subsequent years. Much of the current interior dates from this period. Over the years many chapels, referred to as 'aisles', were added, greatly enlarging the church and leaving it rather irregular in plan. In 1466 St Giles was established as a collegiate church by Pope Paul II.

Chester has the longest and most complete circuit of historic walls in Britain!

The Walls are about two miles long and were first built by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago. They were extended and developed in the Saxon period 10th century. During the 12th century, the Normans rebuilt and extended the Walls so for the first time since the Romans, the Walls formed a completed circuit around Chester.

Starowiślna Street, a significant thoroughfare in Kraków, was originally laid out as part of Kazimierz's town plan in 1335. It was initially known as Wawrzyniecka Street. The current name, in use since the 19th century, derives from the former Church of St. Lawrence, which once stood on the street. The junction of Starowiślna and Dietla streets is historically important as Starowiślna connects Krakow with Podgórze. This connection was strategically significant for Krakow's growth. Dietla Street was a major street in the Kazimierz district.

Micklegate Bar was the most important of York’s four main medieval gateways and the focus for grand events. The name comes from 'Micklelith', meaning great street. It was the main entrance to the city for anyone arriving from the South. At least half a dozen reigning monarchs have passed through this gate and by tradition they stop here to ask the Lord Mayor's permission to enter the city. The lower section of the bar dates from the 12th century, the top two storeys from the 14th. The building was inhabited from 1196. Like the other main gates, Micklegate Bar originally had a barbican built on the front, in this case demolished in 1826.For centuries the severed heads of rebels and traitors were displayed above the gate, the many victims include Sir Henry Purcey (Hotspur) in 1403 and Richard, Duke of York in 1460. The last of the severed heads was removed in 1754.
