On my last London trip I revisited the rebuilt Tottenham Court Road Underground Station. The new exits were opened in December last year. Work is ongoing for 2 more exits and links to the eventual platforms for Crossrail still under construction. This is the new south plaza exit featuring the latest in a series of artworks by the French artist Daniel Buren. I was setting up to get a reflection shot when the man engrossed in his smartphone walked into the composition – perfect!! The escalators for the exit are to the left of where the picture was taken.

The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10 mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing processed with Photomatix Fusion Real Estate setting for a natural look. I used Topaz DeNoise and Topaz Clarity. Not much more processing was needed apart from tidy up with the heal brush and a brightness adjustment layer.

The Church of St. Florian is a historic church in Kraków, Poland, located in Kurniki Street. Legend has it that in 1184 oxen carrying the remains of St. Florian – the future patron saint of Poland – the relics miraculously grew too heavy to be taken any further into the city and remained in Kleparz until it was decided for the Church to be built at that exact spot. The martyr had nothing do with Poland before his relics were brought from Rome to Kraków. Kraków needed a saint for political reasons, in order to reaffirm its role as Poland's capital, which was contested by the city of Gniezno.

The Woudagemaal, being the largest steam pumping station in the world, impresses. The huge machine hall are four steam engines, coupled with four powerful flywheels, which are still operational. The steam engines and flywheels driving eight round centrifugal pumps (also called Jaffa pumps) that move about 6 million cubic meters of water per day.

Thank you very much for your visits, faves, and kind comments.
CATHEDRAL OF STEAM
The special brick building is sleek and sober of character. The modest facade ornamentation and the horizontal wall classification of the Woudagemaal are typical characteristics. The interior of the machine hall - looks like a cathedral - obvious bears features of the Berlage's rationalism, such as steel trusses, the use of stone, oak, sophisticated colors and lots of trimmings.
HISTORY
The Woudagemaal was built at the end of the steam era. In the 19th and the first half of the 20th century large parts of Friesland were under water during the winters. To counteract flooding in Friesland it was decided in 1913 to build a pumping station at Lemmer.
The Woudagemaal was opened in 1920 and has still today - as largest working steam pumping station worldwide - a practical function in the Frisian water management.
STEAM, WATER AND ARCHITECTURE
The pumping station is named after ir. Dirk Frederik Wouda (1880-1961), then chief engineer of the Provincial Public Works. He was responsible for the design and the construction of the pumping station in the style of the Amsterdam School. The calculations of the mechanical installations were done by Ir. Wouda from the Technical University of Delft, while he was assisted by Ir. JC Dijxhoorn.
MONUMENT ON STEAM
Until and including the construction of the electric Hooglandgemaal in Stavoren (1966) the Woudagemaal was used to control the level of the Frisian waters. The pumping station is now only in action at extremely high water.
The whole of the structural building and the technical installation of the Woudagemaal is a protected monument. Since 1977 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Prince Zomahoun, little son of the 23th king of Dassa, who is supposed to have died at 115 years old, after a 35 years long of reign.
He keeps the wooden horse of his ancestor, the King. The King was fed up to see his horses dying, so he asked a portuguese merchant he was dealing with to bring in Benin a giant horse made of wood, to use it when he was walking outside of his Palace. In 1903, he received it and used it a lot. The horse rolls and was pulled by strong men. He had a huge prestige with it.Prince Zomahoun refused huge amounts of money from collectors and museums from all around the world.

Ikigai (生き甲斐, pronounced [ikiɡai]) is a Japanese concept meaning "a reason for being". Everyone, according to the Japanese, has an ikigai. Finding it requires a deep and often lengthy search of self.
2016 started with a few dull and gloomy sunrise, but suddenly sprung into life for the past 5 days. I needed no further invitation to grab my gears out and capture the first sunrise on my photostream for the year 2016.

Occupying a prominent coastal position overlooking the Irish Sea, Dunskey Castle has been the site of a fortification since at least the fourteenth century. Destroyed by Sir Alexander McCulloch in 1489, it was rebuilt in the form of a L-plan tower house and was later substantially extended. The fortification was the home of the Adair family for three hundred years.Dunskey Castle was substantially rebuilt in the early sixteenth century by Ninian Adair who had previously constructed the Castle of St John in Stranraer. The new castle took the form of a three-storey L-plan tower house. A barmkin (curtain wall) ran around the perimeter of the promontory enclosing all the ancillary buildings and included a watch tower.

Street art in Lisbon is flourishing. For over a decade the city's supported urban artists. And now even local government embraces the medium. A trip to Lisbon is incomplete without a tour of the city’s street art. Alfama is the oldest district of the city- the “old town” as it’s known locally. In this district, visitors will find plenty of crumbling bricks and ancient architecture with some sort of street art on them.
