Remnants of the old railway line are still visible on the Coastal Link path along the River Adur in Shoreham. I liked the warm rusty colour on this buffer in this evening's light - slowly being reclaimed by the undergrowth.

The headstock of R 707, showing the buffers with the VR style scoop out of them (not sure why that was), the knuckle coupler which presumably swings out of the way to reveal a hook for the link-and-hook coupling method, and the class and number plates as well as the cowcatcher. One face of the HDReye's buffer board. Notice the hole in the center for one eye to look through. The layout guy was not happy with needing to leave a large hole in the center of the board.

Larry Maxim, a watershed forester with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, examines the effects of the Woolly Adelgid on some Hemlock trees at Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont, Maryland, on Sept. 7, 2011. The adelgid has killed many of the hemlocks in the park, but the DNR is doing some experimental buffer plantings to see how to best grow new trees.
