Durga puja (Bengali:দূর্গা পূজা,),‘Worship of Durga’), also referred to as Durgotsava.
Durga Puja festival marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura.Durga Puja is widely celebrated in the Indian states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Tripura and West Bengal.
Somewhere inside these complex edifices is a stage on which Durga reigns, standing on her lion mount, wielding ten weapons in her ten hands. This is the religious center of the festivities
The word pandal means a temporary structure, made of bamboo and cloth, which is used as a temporary temple for the purpose of the puja.
Creation of the idols
The entire process of creation of the idols (murti) from the collection of clay to the ornamentation is a holy process,
supervised by rites and other rituals.
On the Hindu date of Akshaya Tritiya when the Ratha Yatra is held,
clay for the idols is collected from the banks of a river, preferably the Ganges (Hooghly in Calcutta/Kolkata).
There is age-old custom of collecting a handful of soil (punya mati) from the nishiddho pallis of Calcutta,
literally ‘forbidden territories’, where sex workers live, and adding it to the clay mixture which goes into the making
of the Durga idol.After the required rites, the clay is transported from which the idols are fashioned.
An important event is 'Chakkhu Daan', literally donation of the eyes.
Starting with Devi Durga, the eyes of the idols are painted on Mahalaya or the first day of the Pujas.
Before painting on the eyes, the artisans fast for a day and eat only vegetarian food.
Goddess Durga Rides a Lion and vengeance to kill a demon residing in city of Mysore ,named after Mahishasur,
the very demon which was slain by the Goddess.The original Indian name was Mahishur. Along with these central statues, Idols are also made of other Gods and Goddesses.
As it also includes the worship of Shiva, who is Durga's consort (Durga is an aspect of Goddess Parvati),
in addition to Lakshmi, Saraswati with Ganesha and Kartikeya, who are considered to be Durga's children are crafted.
Worship of mother nature is also done, through nine types of plant (called "Kala Bou"),
including a plantain (banana) tree, which represent nine divine forms of Goddess Durga.

I've realised that, despite Black-browed Albatrosses being one of the most common albatrosses on the east coast, I have very little good photos of them.
After 3 days of searching we finally managed to see one of the rarest birds to visit the UK, a Black-browed Albatross. It was about 800 yds out to sea but then flew inland and ended up gliding at head height right in front of us. We saw it later with a nesting Gannet colony. An incredible experience.
This image originated from a box of personal slides taken by Muriel Sibley and recently discovered in our archive. However of the 600+ images found many are of Formby past and this is just one of them. FCS September 2018.
After lot of deliberations, breaking my all piggybanks and savings accounts, I finally ordered for Canon 600 f4, Wimberley Gimbal Type Tripod Head II and Gitzo GT5541LS Systematic 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs. They will be delivered in 4 weeks and hopefully after that I should be able to catch some good shots
The White-browed Fantail, Rhipidura aureola, is a small passerine bird. This species is found in forest and other woodland. Three eggs are laid in a small cup nest in a tree. The adult White-browed Fantail is about 18 cm long. It has dark brown upperparts, with white spots on the wings, and whitish underparts. The fan-shaped tail is edged in white, and the long white supercilia meet on the forehead. The throat and eyemask are blackish and border whitish moustachial stripes.
The White-browed Fantail is insectivorous, and often fans its tail as it moves through the undergrowth.
A pretty lucky shot as I managed to get this composition full-frame, despite moving bird and moving boat. I definitely miss my old zoom lens on pelagics!

This is a group of "Pit Brow Lasses" from Wigan at the turn of the 20th century. These girls had a tough time, working on the surface of the coal mines, lugging coal, but they have scrubbed up for this picture and put on their best aprons and shawls.
I think it really shows their personalities.

Angels' pitcher Nick Adenhart was among the three killed in a crash in Fullerton when a driver ran a red light, an associate of the rookie player said this morning. The crash occurred only hours after the 22-year-old appeared in Wednesday night's Angels game.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight at the intersection of Orangethorpe Avenue and Lemon Street in Fullerton, said Lt. Craig Brower of the Fullerton Police Department.
Several witnesses told police the driver of a red minivan ran a red light at the intersection, hitting a silver Mitsubishi carrying four passengers. Two people in the Mitsubishi were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, authorities said. Two others also in the Mitsubishi were taken to a nearby hospital, where one was later pronounced dead, Brower said.
The driver of the minivan fled on foot, but police found him about a mile away and took him into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run, Brower said. Further charges are pending as the investigation continues, he said.
A passenger in the minivan was taken to Western Medical Center, authorities said. The condition of that person was unknown. A third vehicle also was struck, but there were no reports that anyone inside was hurt. Authorities said the intersection will be closed at least until noon as the investigation continues.

DEVELOPING: A starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels was killed after a game early Thursday in a hit-and-run accident, FOX News confirmed.
Police said a minivan driver ran a red light in Fullerton, Calif., striking two cars in a crash that left three people dead. A representative for the Angels told FOX that pro-baseball player Nick Adenhart was among those killed.
The Angels said they were saddened by the news and would release a statement shortly.
Adenhart, 22, had just pitched a game against the Oakland A's mere hours earlier.
University of California, Irvine Medical Center spokesman John Murray told The Associated Press that the rookie pitcher died Thursday morning after undergoing surgery.
Another of those killed was also reportedly connected to the team, according to TMZ.
The driver who allegedly fled the scene on foot was caught, arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run, said Fullerton Police Lt. Craig Brower.
Brower wouldn't immediately release the names of the victims to FOXNews.com, saying police were waiting on positive identification from the coroner and attempting to notify the families.
The three killed were in a gray Mitsubishi, which slammed into a light pole after the van struck it, Brower said. Another vehicle also was hit.
Two people in the car died instantly and Adenhart died at UC Irvine hospital a short while later.
A fourth occupant is in critical condition, also at Irvine.
A passenger in the van suffered minor injuries.
Adenhart was the Angels' No. 3 starter, making his season debut Wednesday night.
The right-hander earned a spot in the starting rotation on an injury-plagued Angels staff by impressing manager Mike Scioscia late in spring training.
He was born in Silver Springs, Md

A pair of Black-eyed Albatrosses skirt the surface of the southern ocean looking for fish, showing both the top and bottom surfaces of their wings for the camera. They followed alongside our ship for miles as we sailed toward Antarctica. They get their name from the distinctive dark eyebrow visible here.
The Black-browed Albatross lives in the circum-polar regions of Antarctica and neigboring islands. They have been seen as far north as the United States and the North Atlantic, even Scotland. It's body is about 3 feet long, and it's wingspan 7-8 feet, making it a medium-sized albatross. Like all albatrosses, it has a salt gland which allows it to drink salt water.
