White-browed Antbird - Myrmoborus leucophrys erythrophrys - Белобровая муравьеловка

Barrow, Alaska, was practically nonexistent sixty years ago when my father was stationed at Point Barrow; but even then Browers Cafe was ancient. Originally built as a whaling station in the Nineteenth Century, it was a general store during my dad's time there.
These days, it's a very nice restaurant where I had a cheeseburger which was excellent verging on spectacular, and some Chinese dumplings which weren't quite so much.
Out back of the restaurant, on a long beach running down to the Arctic Ocean, are the skeletons of two whaling boats and one (partial) whale.

This is the only deer in which the female carries antlers. The antlers are long, sweeping beams with forward-pointing brow tines. Males shed their antlers in November-April, and females in May-June. The feet are very large with deeply cleft hoofs that aid in walking on snow and soft earth. When they walk, a clicking sound it made by a tendon slipping over a bone in the foot. Weight can range up to about 700 lbs. Reindeer live in herds that persist for many years. In North America, naturalists have identified about 30 herds which do not mix with other herds, and which migrate together. The herds range in size from 20 to 200,000. In Europe they have been semi-domesticated for 3,000 years. They are allowed to form herds and move about freely, but some selective breeding is done. One fawn is born when the herd arrives at its summer feeding grounds. For the first several weeks the fawn is hidden and the female comes to nurse it several times per day. In just a few weeks it is able to eat on its own and must be ready to migrate in the fall to the winter feeding grounds.

Looking onto Everton Brow from the ridge. The City was going through a misty stage during early February.
The red block sits on a plot previously occupied by flats, these went around 2000 give or take (not too sure there!).
Everton Brow is one of the older routes in the area, linking the old village to the river.

The Black-browed is an Asian barbet native to Peninsular Malaysia & Sumatra, where it inhabits foremost forests between 600 and 2,000 m altitude. A loud but sluggish & difficult-to-see canopy inhabitant of highland forests in peninsular Malaysia & Sumatra. Note the leaf-green body, brightly coloured face, & heavy black bill. More often heard than seen; listen for its long, unending series of hollow-sounding notes. Like many other barbets, it can be difficult to locate when singing, but can sometimes be seen at fruiting trees. Formerly regarded as the same species as Taiwan, Indochinese, and Chinese Barbets.
