Chopta - Uttarakhand - India

Red-browed Finch snacking on grass seeds. I had to crawl on my stomach ever so slowly towards this little guy and was able to get reasonably close enough to get this shot.

Also called the Large Pied Wagtail. This bird is medium-sized and is the largest member of the Wagtail family. It is a resident breeder in India and is endemic to the Indian subcontinent. Often seen on the ground as well as on wires or other man made structures. Clicked at the Banasura Sagar Dam in Wayanad district.

For the past few days I had been seeing a new yellow bird in my backyard, never seen before. So I was on the alert and got lucky when one of them landed close on the branch of the jackfruit tree. Was delighted to note that it was the Yellow-browed Bulbul, a gorgeous bird found in the Western Ghats, southern India and Sri Lanka. There are three known sub-species and this particular one is the Acritillas Indica Indica that is found in the Western Ghats in Kerala though they are known to frequent the coastal areas too. This Bulbul lacks a crest and has the upperparts olive-green with a prominent yellow brow and goggle with the underparts being all yellow as seen in the shot.

Although coucals are related to cuckoos they are not brood parasites.

These mid sized birds are no easy subjects as they move around in bushes and thickets all the time. Early in the morning is the best time in my experience.

Eumomota superciliosa

Türkisbrauenmotmot ...aus der Familie der Sägeracken!

Wikipedia: In Costa Rica it is known as momoto cejiceleste or the far-less flattering pájaro bobo ("foolish bird"), owing to its tendency to allow humans to come very near it without flying away.

The turquoise-browed motmot is a well-known bird in its range and has been chosen as the national bird of both El Salvador and Nicaragua

The highlight of my birdwatching year was our spring break in Yorkshire to catch up with this visitor from the South Atlantic that returned to Bempton on 30 March 2022 and was resident on and off until the start of August. Without question, my Bird of the Year and I really hope it has escaped the dreadful Avian Flu that has ravaged our seabirds this year.

I hope 2023 will bring respite to the birds and our wildlife in general as well as those people still suffering from barbarous aggression. May your own New Year be filled with peace, prosperity and wonderful photographs. As always your comments throughout the year have been much appreciated. Happy 2023!
