-----------

Birds are small to large, warm-blooded, egg-laying, feathered, bipedal vertebrates capable of powered flight (although some are secondarily flightless). Many scientists characterize birds as dinosaurs, but this is consequence of the physical structure of evolutionary diagrams. Birds aren’t dinosaurs. They’re birds. The logic & rationale that some use to justify statements such as “birds are dinosaurs” is the same logic & rationale that results in saying “vertebrates are echinoderms”. Well, no one says the latter. No one should say the former, either.

However, birds are evolutionarily derived from theropod dinosaurs. Birds first appeared in the Triassic or Jurassic, depending on which avian paleontologist you ask. They inhabit a wide variety of terrestrial and surface marine environments, and exhibit considerable variation in behaviors and diets.

There's nothing like a feed of Paspalum seed. If you're a Red-browed Finch that is. This is a typical feeding action of these birds. They fly onto the seed stalk, weigh it down to the ground and then have a good feed.

With Yellow-browed Warblers becoming an increasingly common visitor across the UK and a lot of reports over the past few weeks, another one being in MK a couple of weeks ago, I was hopeful that this year would deliver my first one and after many fruitless walks listening out for them recently, I bumped into this one by the local brook this morning.

It gave itself away with several calls, fortunately most of which I managed to catch on video before it continued to forage silently among the willows for the next 20 minutes or so after, briefly showing itself among some of the less densely covered branches in the second part of the video. It may not have been the best view but I'm still over the moon to have finally found one, especially so close to home.
