Junk from my basement including a broken machine caster wheel with a very used finishing, washer a few broken drill bits and a rusty drywall screw. Never know when you might need stuff like this!
An icy & broken chain link fence is used as a barrier to keep people from wandering into unsafe conditions. This icy fence was pretty buried in the sand which is allowing ice to form as waves crashed into it.

Happened upon this forlorn scene while walking the fence line in an old cemetery recently. Sadness in these places, like many things in life, is not of a uniform thickness. It ebbs and flows, and often has much to do with where you are standing at any particular point. Just like some days seem intolerable, while other days, possibly in the same week, seem not so bad or even pleasant. On this brilliant blue sky day, I had not even the slightest intention of visiting a cemetery. Places to go, people to see, that sort of mentality. But suddenly there it was. A rural cemetery, very small and largely unvisited except when time comes to bury someone. And this one abutted an Amish farm. Literally graves one one side of the fence, fertile farmland just beyond, separated by only a few feet. They were so close I wasn't even sure if I was entering the cemetery or the farm. I just pulled onto a gravel road and happened to find myself on the death side of the fence.
As I explored the graves in the old section, my attention kept getting drawn to the farm side of the fence. Something about the visual contrast was very appealing. Lush crops in bright sunlight while I stood among weathered gravestones in the shade of old trees; cows mooing in the distance. I found myself wanting to be on the other side of the fence. I wanted to view the cemetery from the other side. Yet it was oddly compelling to straddle these two worlds, so I remained close to the fence line. I came upon this tiny figurine as I made my way out of the grove of trees and reemerged into sunlight. There the sadness of this place pooled up around me. It was the broken wings that got to me. They lay in the grass like the useless appendages they had become. It put me in mind of a bird with a broken wing that will never fly again. The posture of the cherub suggested it was resigned to its fate. It seemed indifferent to the blue sky overhead which taunted freedom. The barbed wire fence line echoed the sense of confinement and reinforced the concept of boundaries.
The morning dew soaked through the knees of my jeans as I kneeled down to take the photo. It's happened so often I barely even notice. The sun glare off the screen of my phone was dazzling but it didn't really matter. I shot blindly holding the phone in different positions. I trusted I would get the photo. The decision to stop at this cemetery had at first seemed impulsive and spontaneous. Now it felt as if I had been guided to this exact spot.

I Broke Again Today
I broke again today,
A million little pieces
Not so’s you would notice
My heart has died a thousand times
I broke again today
The pain it never ceases
There’s nothing in this world
Could ever change this paradigm
I tried to call again last night
To hear your voice on the other side
Maybe you still think of me
Of who we used to be
Before we said that last goodbye
Sitting alone here in the dark
My soul covered with love’s scars
Reminders of the joy, the pain
The costly price we paid
You played me like an old guitar
I broke again today
A million ice cold pieces
There’ll be no goin’ back
No hope, no future in my tears
I broke again today
My hand all eights and aces
Outside a storm still rages
Now I’m forced to face my fears
Yes they are broken men ...... a sad sight but hope is still alive within ..... hope all have a brilliant day
What better way to mend the broken neck of a concrete garden goose than with Duck Tape? So now we have a Ring-necked Goose watching over the garden!
I've got a 40-foot shadow thanks to the low sun just rising over Broken Bow, NE. The DPU on another BNSF hopper train is rumbling through the quiet crossings in town, hustling the empty hoppers back to Alliance and eventually the Powder River Basin.
Oh no no oh no
Not broken
In two not you
Like the seed you grow
Under it all
You're roots take hold
Smooth out the creases
Then you'll see
And when you fall
Down in between them all
Here you are whole
Not broken
On and on hold on
Not broken
Just loose at the seams
Oh no no don't let go
Just listen
Goodness increases
You will see
And when you fall
Down in between them all
Here you are whole
Not broken
Leave it behind
All of the pain inside
Here you will be
Not broken
Through the crowd, patchwork souls
Move closer
Closer
And when you fall
Down in between them all
Here you are whole
Not broken
Leave it behind
All of the pain inside
Here you will be
Not broken
You will see
You will see
Even a broken windmill can be photogenic in the right light. I drive past this thing all the time and this was the first time I ever felt inspired to shoot it.
