A couple of macro shots from the garden for a change, taken using the Fuji MCEX-16 macro extension tube.

This one is a close-up of a bleeding heart - the common name for the dicentra spectablis - sat on our newly painted garden bench.

One of the flowers on the Bleeding Heart shrub in the garden. It comes back year after year and always produces masses of these unusual flowers.

With respect to photography, my weekend has been uninspired. I took some pictures of the moon and the day's sunset at the end of the day on Sunday, then reviewed the images in my computer and decided none of them was worth posting. Apart from that, I didn't take a single picture all weekend; but wanting to upload something to my stream, I looked through my archives and found two new dance photos, including this one, that I thought worth sharing.

This was taken during a recent dance exhibition sponsored by the Phoenix-area Fred Astaire studios, and held as a benefit for MS patients. (The studios do this twice each year.) The image shown here is one of 39 that I took during a riveting performance to the Leona Lewis smash hit, "Bleeding Love." It is the fifth picture from that same dance that I have added to my Flickr stream, and I do not rule out the possibility that I might eventually upload one or two more. So stay tuned. (My favorite shot in this particular series is this one, in spite of its flaws.)

Taken at a showcase exhibition at the Mesa Arts Center, sponsored by the Phoenix-area Fred Astaire studios as a benefit for MS patients. This is the same couple shown in several other images in my stream, including this one, which tells the story behind the series. I took 39 pictures of this couple during their very riveting performance, of which a good percentage turned out quite well.

Dicentra spectabilis

Anemone sylvestris

Bleeding heart is a wonderful old fashioned clumping garden flower originally from Asia. It's easy to see where the name comes from as the individual flowers resemble tiny hears, each with a drop of blood at the bottom. It blooms freely in the Spring and then dies back in the heat of the Summer. If kept well watered and not in hot sun, the plants will last a lot longer and keep blooming.

Anemone sylvestris is a nice Spring blooming anemone that spreads by seed to form large colonies if given the chance. Sometimes called Snowdrop windflower, this plant prefers partial or bright shade but will do in sun if it's not too hot and dry. The blooms are profuse early on in May but can extend far into the season or rebloom later in the Fall. The buds curve down but open face up.

I like the leaves in the background almost as much as I like the delicacy of the flowers in the foreground. Taken in my neighbor Janet's garden.

You'll find more of Janet's flowers in Janet's Garden and all my favorite flower shots including many from Janet's Garden in Flowers.

Two versions of the same photograph, both Straight Out of the Camera (SOOC).

For the past few weeks I've had my Olympus set up to shoot RAW+JPG. The JPG version's been getting further in-camera processing; it's square, and it's turned to what the software calls "Gentle Sepia." The result's been that I get two very different versions of every photo I take. Thought I'd share a pair, today.

This camera setup actually means I'm shooting the sepia version, as that's what the viewfinder shows me; essentially the RAW photo is an incidental byproduct. Which version I post, it turns out, has been unpredictable--which might be the point of taking two pix with each shutter click.

I'm not really an SOOC shooter, by the way. Almost always my photographs get tweaked ("photoshopped"), though it's unusual for me to do fancy processing. I'll likely talk a bit about that tomorrow.
