It's easy to see why these shrubs get their common name.

Hope everyone's having a good week.

How beautifully leaves grow old. How full of light and color are their last days.

An old-fashioned spring favourite that is found in many gardens.

Thank you for stopping by and for leaving me a comment. Have a great day!

The bleeding heart plant (Lamprocapnos spectabilis) gets its common name from its puffy, heart-shaped pink flowers that dangle from long, arching stems. Beneath the heart shape is a protruding white petal that looks like a drop—hence the "bleeding" in bleeding heart. In fact, the bleeding heart flower's meaning is said to be about unrequited or rejected love, as well as love and romance in general.

"Nature never did betray the heart that loved her."

-William Wordsworth

The story behind the bleeding heart flower is as follows: There was a young Prince who fell in love with the beautiful Princess of the land. He devised a plan to try to win her heart by presenting her with a magnificent gift each day until he won her heart.

Male gelada (Theropithecus gelada), an old world monkey also known as a "bleeding heart monkey" for the bare patch of skin on their chest. They are found only in the Ethiopian Highlands, with a large population restricted to the Semien Mountain region and are the only primates that are primarily grazers.

Those of us with a fascination for the odd and unusual, will love bleeding tooth fungus (Hydnellum peckii). It has a weird appearance straight out of a horror movie, as well as some potential medical uses. What is bleeding tooth fungus? It is a mycorrhiza with serrated basal spines and oozing, blood-like secretions topside. A mushroom with a flair for the dramatic that is native to the Pacific Northwest.

An eastern tent caterpillar visits a white bleeding heart group of flowers, which dangle from their vine in a row. Both are seen in late spring. The caterpillar eventually turns into a moth in the Lasiocampidae family. Texturized.
