Bit of a strange mengdeni with a spotted neck. Pseudonaja affinis are the dominant (only?) species of brown found less than 50kms south. The odd dark scales are typically an affinis trait, possibly some funny business where the distributions meet/ overlap?

A bit of spam - a lot of images I took last summer when Bristol hosted the Gromit Unleashed public exhibition.

Bits and pieces of cow or is a pig? On a local market in a Miao village in the southern parts of China.

More of the Pink Penguin basket without the handles. I almost thought I had ruined this one, and then decided to add the centre strip and the bow and selvaged it.

1936 GIBSON-MADE KALAMAZOO KTG-11 TENOR GUITAR

A customer sent this nice old KTG-11 in for repair a bit ago. He's had a number of Kalamazoos come through my shop for fixing-up and this one will mix nicely into his collection. I've always liked this tenor version of the KG-11 model as it's built a little lighter than the 6-strings and they tend to have a lush, rich, and punchy sound to them. Something about fifths tuning one on of these is just delightful.

The instrument arrived in good order save that it needed a neck reset desperately. There's plenty of wear and tear to the finish but structurally it arrived in better shape than usual for an old Kalamazoo. The original saddle was non-modified, too, and so I was even able to reuse it at its full original height after work was done.

Repairs included: a neck reset, fret level/dress, new customer-supplied geared banjo pegs for the headstock, replacement endpin/bridge pins, side dots install, cleaning, and setup.

Setup notes: it plays bang-on at 1/16" overall action at the 12th fret. Strings are 42w, 30w, 18w, 12 for GDAE octave mandolin tuning. The neck is straight.

Scale length: 22 7/8"

Nut width: 1 1/8"

String spacing at nut: 7/8"

String spacing at bridge: 1 3/16"

Body length: 17 1/8"

Lower bout width: 14 5/8"

Waist width: 8 7/8"

Upper bout width: 9 3/4"

Side depth at endpin: 3 15/16"

Top wood: solid spruce

Back/sides wood: solid mahogany

Neck wood: mahogany

Bracing type: ladder

Fretboard: Brazilian rosewood, ebony nut

Bridge: Brazilian rosewood, bone saddle

Neck feel: medium C/V shape, flat board

Condition notes: it has a ton of scratches all over the body but no cracks. How about that? Tuners and pins are replacements but otherwise it's all-original.

I was able to reuse the original saddle at its full height. All I did was modify its back-edge profile to get the strings to mount more cleanly. I scrounged bridge pins from my bins -- these are nice ebony ones with a brass ring in them that fits-in with the gold tuner pegs.

The new tuners, with their yellow transparent amber buttons, are too cool.

On a walk around the city to catch up on events November 24 Christchurch New Zealand. The last time a saw Tall Toy he had block on a string coming form his mouth.. it must have got broken.

This is 'Tall Toys' Giraffe No.16 by Artist Martyn Giles... I walk past this one the other day again and he has some damage... the string with the hook is gone, Giant fibreglass Giraffe sculptures, reaching 2.5 metres high, are now standing tall on the streets, parks and public spaces of Christchurch and surrounding areas until 24 January 2015. At the end of the public art exhibition, in February, the Giraffes will be auctioned so we can all be part of raising money for local charities and turn the city’s Summer of fun into a helping hand for those who are in need.

The best bit about Pisa is watching people pose to have their photos taken as if they're holding up the leaning tower (or in some cases pushing it over).
