It's wild to think of a time when a little bit of iron could change someone's life. I'm out in the brush behind the old John Charlton homestead – demolished a decade ago, and abandoned at least a generation earlier. Here's a couple fine examples of what was called the "sulky plow", a two-wheeled conveyance patented by John Deere in 1875. Coincidentally, that's the very same year this farmland was cleared, though these implements certainly came a little later. Mount Rose was never on the cutting edge of technology. Hauled behind a horse, or more likely a team of horses, this was the first invention to finally give a farmer freedom from having to walk his fields all day. Their incredible density has held a century-plus of rust at bay, little sign of breaking down or wearing away. The wheels were then just as you see them now, no wood or rubber, just solid bone-shaking metal straight through. A hundred thousand hours of back-and-forth travel haunts them, cutting endless furrows in the earth. Used up in incessant effort till the day that tractors came to town. They've been slowly swallowed by young growth rising on the banks of Sabeans Brook, locked up in a kind of organic prison. They'll never be freed from the stories they carry.

An interesting bit of 20th century history: Herbert Hoover, before assuming the US presidency, was head of the USFA ("food administration") during the first World War. In this capacity he organized large scale relief efforts in Europe that saved many lives. This sculpture of the Egyptian goddess Isis was a thank-you gift from Belgium's "school children, refugees and soldiers" in 1922.

Horticulture book, photocopied pages from an 1800's Chemistry book, the beginning of a roll of double sided tape, a fruit sticker, a bit of wallpaper sample, a piece of red paper that I picked up in the parking lot and have been saving for over a year, the tag from an antique sign we purchased, a photo envelope and a map bit leftover from another project....whew....
A bit of a mess but they're cute so nevermind, I finally managed to get one with the whole tail in the frame. By the way the title of the chaffinch picture came from the TV show The Mighty Boosh, the legendary episode with the never-before-attempted Four Way Crimp...........Alan-Arachnid, the Spider Provider ! Bit hard to get was this one.. I think I saw it only twice in these colours... Well, at least I have it.

Third pic is the block I made today.
It always takes more time than I imagine.
I am hoping the final layout will just jump out at me as I make more blocks.
A little bit bored waiting for the taxi to take us to the wedding place, found a way to entertain ourselves. The idea was we had to turn on the camera timer, and then 10 seconds to come up with an idea of an artistic picture. In this one, each one of us got our desired weapon of choice.
Mine, as I just realized, was the quickest and most painless one. Don't you think?

I found a packet of white squares while I was cleaning and organizing and decided to use them to explore ideas.
I am taking inspiration from a piece that I had done in a previous class.
