Steenokkerzeel, BELGIUM (studio)
Now that I have a nice big studio, I might as well learn how to take pictures in it. I find it much more difficult than shooting on location. That's why I'm doing a series of test shoots to try stuff out. The fantastic Kailyka helped me out on this one.
LIGHTING INFO:
I know I move my lights around a lot in function of the mood, the story and the model's features. That's why I figured to keep it rather simple in the studio. This one is made with one Elinchrom Ranger head in a medium Chimera softbox to camera right (pretty high up).

I was asked to give a demonstration about the way I work with off-camera flash on an event for the Belgian Federation of Professional Photographers. I gave a presentation for 20 minutes together with my buddy and wedding photographer Pieter Van Impe. Later that day we did a 45 minute live shoot.
I wanted to show how I improvise with the model and the location, so I didn't prepare anything. It wasn 't easy to look for backgrounds, set up lights, make pics and at the same time explain what I was doing to 60 photographers. So it's not my best work but I hope I gave an idea of the endless possibilities of small flashes.

Last Saturday my wife was out with her friends and my parents kidnapped my kids, so I unexpectedly ended up home alone. Since I received some new studio lighting equipment last week, I couldn't resist setting up a quick improvised test shoot. I asked on Twitter if anyone wanted to pose for me and Lut, the wife of a fellow photographer, volunteered. Thanks Lut for being so stunning and patient.
Here the main light is a Hensel Expert Pro 500 monobloc with a beautydish. A Sunbounce micro-mini below and a pro to camera left, are used as fill light. A second Hensel monobloc with a softbox was placed on the opposite side to get a tiny bit of hair light.

Just a snap from the family holiday in France. As a professional photographer it's tempting to lug around all that gear on holiday but I find it important to step away from photography from time to time and just focus on my family. I only took 400 images in two weeks and mostly just with my small digicam (and a waterproof housing).

I really needed to do something different in the studio. After being inspired by a lecture of Paulo Reversi, I set all the flash/studio gear aside and go back to basics. I spent 70 EUR in the DIY store on a pair of halogen worklights and shower curtains (to make a large lightsource) and a couple of rough blankets as a background.
Shot with my Hasselblad 500cm on Ilford HP5+
Shutterspeed was 1 second (no surprise I used a tripod then)

A while ago I did a model shoot with the fantastic Kim Van Noten. We didn't have a real plan except for having fun while creating pictures. Ake was my kind assistant for this shoot and she also shot some video.

LIGHTING INFO:
The main light is natural light. I added a snooted SB-24 behind the model to create a warm summer feel to the image and separate the model fom the background.
I made a video to show how we did this:

The guys from Canon asked me if I could do some workshops at the Canon Eos Discovery Days. It was a bit weird for me to do this in front of such a huge and diverse audience in a really short time but it was big fun and I met tons of great people.
For those who couldn't be there or didn't understand my very special interpretation of the French language, I decided to try to replicate my workshop on my blog. 3 new posts are coming up.
LIGHTING INFO

I had a new lighting idea that I wanted to check out. I made two small striplights out of the boxes of Manfrotto/Bogen lightstands. I just cut a whole for the flash, added some wrapping fabric as an internal diffuser and put 3 layers of tracing paper on the front. The lighting idea isn't yet exactely what I want, but I'm getting there.

LIGHTING INFO:
An SB24 to camera right, provides the dramatic light in this picture. By placing it really close to the background (a wooden shed), it brings out the texture of the background really nice. The flash was set to 1/2 power to overpower the ambient light. Triggered with PW's.

I just got myself a Peleng, that's an 8mm russian fisheye lens. It's full manual and a bit awkward to use but I allready saw some stunning shots made with it. This is not the kind of lens that will sit on my camera for a whole wedding but I hope I will be able to create a few original shots with it.

Met up with some friends at a workshop. We didn't follow the workshop (we already had before) but just had some fun outside. We borrowed some gear and models from Calumet and Sunbounce who organized the workshop.
Have you ever wondered who bends the special German Steel of the California Sunbounce Sun-Movers? Well ... meet Waldemar. He also drives the van across Europe during the Sunbounce tour. He's a very sweet guy but he has this KGB killer look that I wanted to photograph. Lit with just a beautydish straight above his head. Love the detail of the H4D.

I've been teaming up with the famous wedding photographer Mike Larson (www.mikelarson.com) for 3 workshops organized by Calumet Photo and California Sunbounce in Belgium and Antwerp. To be honest Mike did most of the work and I just demo how I use Sunbounce reflectors in combination with off-camera flash to create a natural look. Long days but lots of fun.
By the time we were going to do some live shooting the sky cleared and we even got some nice sunlight. Here I used just the sun as a hair light and a Sunbounce Mini to reflect that light into Laure-Anne's face. Photography can be so simple at times.

Yesterday we bought one of those giant trampolines for the kids. They really love it and showed off the whole day. When I stuck my head into the safety net, I noticed the round shapes, she unusual angle and the nice clouds. It immediately struck me that this would be a perfect situation to photograph with my new 8mm Peleng Fisheye lens. PHOTO BY BERT STEPHANI - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
LIGHTING INFO:
After a few shots with just available light, I wanted to add a strobe to make the background/sky more dramatic while the subjects remained well lit. A visiting friend acted as a human lightstand (camera left) for a single bare Nikon SB-24 (triggered with PW's). You can see Michael/lightstand with the flash on the left side of the frame. I added this picture to the Flickr Set to show you the setup.
The strobe was at 24mm and full power. Camera was set to 1/250 at f/16.

Pro model Sylviane read on my Facebook that I was scouting a location near where she lives. By the time I finished scouting we arranged to have a short improvised fun shoot.
I only had a camera + 24-70 + speedlight in my bag. In the trunk of my car, I also found a Sunbounce mini. But not having all my gear with me, couldn't stop us from having a fun 30 minute shoot.
At home, I only spent another 30 minutes postprocessing the shoot in Lightroom
The limited gear forced me to be creative and I actually rediscovered a cool lighting technique.

Last Saturday my cousin got married and I had the honor to photograph this fantastic day. They choose to have a winter wedding and boy did they get what they wanted. Because of the unexpected snow we almost didn't get there.
Between church and reception I asked them to jump in the car and give me 15 minutes to make some pics in the snow before the sun would set. I saw this vineyard, pulled over and took some pictures.
I shot most of the wedding on digital but couldn't resist shooting a couple of rolls of film on my Hasselblad. This was all natural light and shot on Tri-X 400

Lotte got a photoshoot as a present for her birthday. The friends and Lotte's bf, came along. I had a lot of fun shooting them. It was a dull gray fall day, but we managed to get a more sunny feeling in most of the pics.
LIGHTING INFO:
By placing the subject about a meter under a rood, the available soft light became more directional and I used it as a main light. Because the background (a stone wall) was a bit too dark I placed a Vivitar 285HV next to it. It was at camera right, pointing down towards the left bottom corner of the picture. To create a pattern on the wall, I let the light come through some branches. A blue gel was added to create a bit more contrasting colours between subject and background. Triggered with PW's, flash was at 1/16.
