UPLACE, a fine corportate client, is going to sponsor triathlete Bruno 'Bruce' Clerbout so he can completely focus on his sports carreer as a professional athlete. They asked me to do some promo shots.

TECHNICAL INFO

The biggest difficulty for this shoot was that it was near freezing and extremely windy. To get some interesting light on this grey day, we had to light every shot with flashes. We also had to work extremely fast to avoid Bruno getting ill.

Bruno is lit with a Vivitar 285HV (full power) in a small softbox about 90° to camera right. We let just a bit of ambient light in to act as fill for the shadow side. The wall in the background went completely black, so we lit it with two Vivitars to get a subtle spot of light wich helps to separate from the background.

I don't do a lot of typical studio photography and usually white seamless backgrounds are considered as the enemy. So I hesitated to take on this job for fashion designer Griet Verhoeven (www.enolah.be). Having the opportunity to work with my favorite model Erika, made me do it. And I'm glad I did it. It was a valuable lesson about being open to other kinds of photography. Much to my own surprise I enjoyed this shoot a lot. The soft light and white seamless makes you focus on posing much more, because that's the only tool left to tell your story. The extremely professional attitude and fun collaboration with the model, the designer, her assistant/stylist and the photographer was also very enjoyable.

Lighting Info:

To brighten up a dull cloud covered rainy day. I placed a bare SB-24 flash to my right on a light stand. To slightly overpower the sky, I had to use it at 1/2 power. Triggered by Pocket Wizards.

I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.

A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.

LIGHTING INFO

Although it was pretty chilly, Fauve didn't mind to shoot for 10 minutes in the surf. The sun was still pretty high. I underexposed the scene by a stop or two to keep enough detail in the sky. This rendered our model to almost pitch black. Ake was kind enough to get in the water with us holding a California Sunbounce mini micro reflector (silver) and a flash (Vivitar 285HV) attached to it (camera left). The Vivitar was set to full power to balance with the still powerful backlight. Triggered with PW's.

Ake managed to not only keep the sunbounce steady in heavy winds without falling in the water, she also yelled every time a big wave came in (still got pretty wet though).

Zaventem (Belgium) lighting test with Erika

I wanted to check out some setups in my ministudio, so I asked my friend/muse/model Erika to pose for me. This is what happends when she decided to switch jobs. Luckily we got back to what we do best after a few shots.

LIGHTING INFO:

I was lit by a studio strobe to camera left and a bit above eye level. I had an SB-24 with a red gel in my hands so I used it to hide myself. Triggered with Pocketwizards. No complicated lighting setup at all but I'm still pretty new to studio photography and I'm trying to get the details right.

Tonight I was one of the few fortunate people who got to play with a beta version of the new Canon EOS 5D mkII

I only held it for like two minutes but that was enough to be really impressed. It feels and handles well and it's amazing how little noise you get with such a megapixel packed sensor at high resolution.

I shot some HD video's at high iso's and they look just amazing. Too bad I'm not allowed to share them yet.

While I waited for a few minutes with the 5D, I played around with the huge 200mm f2.0 on a tiny 450D

I am not a sports photographer at all but I find it fun to shoot one of my son's soccer games from time to time. I really enjoy it although my respect for sports photographers grows every time I attempt taking some good action shots.

TECHNICAL INFO

I used a 1D mkIII with a 70-200 and a 2x extender on a Gitzo monopod. The extender reduces the 70-200 to an f5.6 lens that doesn't always focus fast and accurate enough. The extender also reduces the image quality, certainly in backlit situation. I can't justify getting a 400mm f/4 to shoot for fun but for what I use it, the 70-200 + extender is more than good enough.

Oh yeah, they won 1-22!

Valencia - SPAIN

I went to the first congres of the European Federation of Professional Photographers (FEP) in Spain. On the day after the congress, my friend Jean and I went on our own alternative photographic safari. I wanted to take a portrait of Jean in front of some amazing piece of architecture. My camerabag was stolen the day before so I didn't have my DSLR nor my pocketwizards, ST-E2 or my 580EX with me to use a flash wirelessly. So we had to get out the biowizards.

LIGHTING INFO:

Jean held a 580EX in his hand and pointed it towards a large white info panel about the building (camera right). I stabilised Jean's 5D on a dustbin and counted down so Jean could manually fire the flash at the same time, I pressed the shutter. We worked at 1/6th of a second to allow enough time to sync.

Suzanne is an Egyptian beauty who lives in Antwerp. She needed a small portfolio to audition for a part in a videoclip from her favorite Egyptian artist.

The guys from Canon asked me if I could do some workshops at the Canon Eos Discovery Days. It was a bit weird for me to do this in front of such a huge and diverse audience in a really short time but it was big fun and I met tons of great people.

For those who couldn't be there or didn't understand my very special interpretation of the French language, I decided to try to replicate my workshop on my blog. 3 new posts are coming up.

Being a member of the Strobist cult, using speedlights off camera has been second nature to me and lots of other photographers for quite some time now. But the majority of photographers still don't know that you can do this. That's why I did a quick lighting setup, starting with just one speedlight and showing the process of adding two more lights.

LIGHTING INFO

We started out with just one 580EX II on a stand with a white shoot through umbrella to camera left. Flash was on 1/16 and triggered with the ST-E2 on camera.

To separate the model from the black background, I placed another 580EXII (on 1/16) with a black straw grid on the opposite side of the main light to give me some hair light.

I recently did a guerilla shoot together with my friend and fellow photographer Jean. The goal was to test the California Sunbounce Micro Mini reflector with flash attachement. We decided to go on a completely unplanned mission: no location, no make-up, no models, not much gear and no concept. Just shoot what we came up with at the moment.

A group of calanetics ethousiasts asked me to shoot some pics at their annual bbq as a surprise for their teacher. I'm afraid I wasn't the surprise she expected ;-)

The master of the house was (except for me) the only male at the party. He wanted a picture of his new BMW bike. We also had a lot of fun making this babe-on-a-bike parody.

LIGHTING INFO:

I underexposed the background to make it more dramatic. A single Vivitar 285HV to camera left, lights the subject.

I put a CTO (orange) gel in front of the flash and set my white balance to tungsten. That setting shifts the whole color spectrum. It makes the sky much more blue and neutralises the orange gel so the subject is neutrally lit. No photoshop, just lightroom.

Now that I have a nice big studio, I might as well learn how to take pictures in it. I find it much more difficult than shooting on location. That's why I'm doing a series of test shoots to try stuff out. The fantastic Kailyka helped me out on this one.

LIGHTING INFO:

I know I move my lights around a lot in function of the mood, the story and the model's features. That's why I figured to keep it rather simple in the studio. This one is made with one Elinchrom Ranger head in a medium Chimera softbox to camera right (pretty high up).

I was asked to give a demonstration about the way I work with off-camera flash on an event for the Belgian Federation of Professional Photographers. I gave a presentation for 20 minutes together with my buddy and wedding photographer Pieter Van Impe. Later that day we did a 45 minute live shoot.

I wanted to show how I improvise with the model and the location, so I didn't prepare anything. It wasn 't easy to look for backgrounds, set up lights, make pics and at the same time explain what I was doing to 60 photographers. So it's not my best work but I hope I gave an idea of the endless possibilities of small flashes.

Last Saturday my wife was out with her friends and my parents kidnapped my kids, so I unexpectedly ended up home alone. Since I received some new studio lighting equipment last week, I couldn't resist setting up a quick improvised test shoot. I asked on Twitter if anyone wanted to pose for me and Lut, the wife of a fellow photographer, volunteered. Thanks Lut for being so stunning and patient.

Here the main light is a Hensel Expert Pro 500 monobloc with a beautydish. A Sunbounce micro-mini below and a pro to camera left, are used as fill light. A second Hensel monobloc with a softbox was placed on the opposite side to get a tiny bit of hair light.

I really needed to do something different in the studio. After being inspired by a lecture of Paulo Reversi, I set all the flash/studio gear aside and go back to basics. I spent 70 EUR in the DIY store on a pair of halogen worklights and shower curtains (to make a large lightsource) and a couple of rough blankets as a background.
