After a stormy periode in my life, the kids and I needed to recharge our batteries again to start a new chapter. So we went for a couple of days to the Belgian coast.
This was shot with a Holga on Kodak Portra 160NC

I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.
A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.

For the portraits we went to a nice windmill that was once the home of the hero on the legendary Belgian tv-show "kapitein Zeppos".
LIGHTING INFO:
A nice blue sky with dramatic clouds and a landmark with a strong silhouette are perfect for an underexposed background. A bare SB24 (with pocketwizard) on full power held by my assistant provides the necessary fill for a correct exposure of the couple.

Just a few pictures from our family holiday. Travelling with 3 small kids can be pretty exhausting so I packed just a minimum of photo gear: my Ixus and a DSLR with one lens (which stayed in the hotel safe for most of the time anyway).

It doesn't happen too often here in Belgium that we get a nice layer of snow that pretty much covers everything. And when it happens it usually doesn't take more than a few days before it's gone. So I did absolutely wanted to do a shoot in the snow. I had this image in my head of a guy in a suit in the snowy fields. (Don't ask me why, that's just the way my chaotic brain works.) My friend David offered to pose so we went for a quick improvised 20 minute shoot in the fields behind my house.
As you probably know if you follow my stream, I'm completely in love with my 34yo Hasselblad 500CM camera, so that became my weapon of choice for this shoot. Shot on Kodak Porta 160NC. This scene was backlit by the sun, the snow reflects enough light to light David's face. Scanned with the Epson V700. Played around in Lightroom to make the colors a bit funkier

Although it was pretty chilly, Fauve didn't mind to shoot for 10 minutes in the surf. The sun was still pretty high. I underexposed the scene by a stop or two to keep enough detail in the sky. This rendered our model to almost pitch black. Ake was kind enough to get in the water with us holding a California Sunbounce mini micro reflector (silver) and a flash (Vivitar 285HV) attached to it (camera left). The Vivitar was set to full power to balance with the still powerful backlight. Triggered with PW's.
Ake managed to not only keep the sunbounce steady in heavy winds without falling in the water, she also yelled every time a big wave came in (still got pretty wet though).

In my never ending quest for original angles and creative compositions, I started playing with an Olympus E-PL1 and an underwater housing.
Last weekend I took the kids for a short trip to the Belgian coast and took the camera and my wetsuit with me just in case I felt crazy enough to get into the freezing water for some first test shots. And yep ... I was crazy enough :-)
I only spent 10 minutes or so in the surf but I'm pretty happy with the results.

We were shooting portraits in our mobile studio at a corporate event when we had to take a break because Eddy Wally was performing. Might as well grab a few pictures of this legend.
Eddy Wally aka "the Voice of Europe" has been a phenomenon for many decades in Belgium. He's often seen as a wacko guy who sings corny songs but anyone who can make a crowd go wild after singing one word, deserves respect. I think Eddy is Rock 'n Roll and wanted to shoot him like the rockstar he is.

Met up with some friends at a workshop. We didn't follow the workshop (we already had before) but just had some fun outside. We borrowed some gear and models from Calumet and Sunbounce who organized the workshop.
My friend Tom was shooting the model with one on-axis (about 2 meters above and behind the cam) big light with a long throw reflector. I saw this image in my mind so, I just threw a pocket wizard on the H4D and fired of a few shots between Tom's legs.

I recently did a guerilla shoot together with my friend and fellow photographer Jean. The goal was to test the California Sunbounce Micro Mini reflector with flash attachement. Kobe and Jelle had a lot of fun on the trampoline.
LIGHTING INFO:
I used this setup before and I try to avoid repeating myself but I couldn't resist to make a picture like this for Jelle's diary. This is shot with a Peleng 8mm fisheye lens. I shot at 1/250 at f/11 to underexpose the sky. My dad held a 580EX flash to camera right. The flash was set at 1/2 power and triggered by Pocketwizard.

I've been teaming up with the famous wedding photographer Mike Larson (www.mikelarson.com) for 3 workshops organized by Calumet Photo and California Sunbounce in Belgium and Antwerp. To be honest Mike did most of the work and I just demo how I use Sunbounce reflectors in combination with off-camera flash to create a natural look. Long days but lots of fun.
By the time we were going to do some live shooting the sky cleared and we even got some nice sunlight. But Since Mike and Tom (www.fotofolio.be) were already going to shoot natural light, I showed some ways to use reflector and a speedlight to CREATE good light when there is none.

It’s almost Kobe’s seventh birthday and like each year I try to come up with some kind of corny idea for the invitation cards for his birthday party. This time, we went for a quick 5 minute studioshoot (Hensel Expert Pro Plus 500 with an Octaform Lightbox 150 to camera right, Sunbounce Pro to camera left as fill) and some crappy Photoshop work.
Can you find the seven differences?
This is lit with a Hensel Expert Pro 500 monobloc with a beautydish. A Sunbounce micro-mini below and a pro to camera left, are used as fill light.

I don't do a lot of typical studio photography and usually white seamless backgrounds are considered as the enemy. So I hesitated to take on this job for fashion designer Griet Verhoeven (www.enolah.be). Having the opportunity to work with my favorite model Erika, made me do it. And I'm glad I did it. It was a valuable lesson about being open to other kinds of photography. Much to my own surprise I enjoyed this shoot a lot. The soft light and white seamless makes you focus on posing much more, because that's the only tool left to tell your story. The extremely professional attitude and fun collaboration with the model, the designer, her assistant/stylist and the photographer was also very enjoyable.

I got to do a fun workshop / demo at a "strobist" festival organized by a Dutch camerastore (www.cameratools.nl). They provided me with some cool skaters and a small ramp.
LIGHTING INFO:
For the second setup we wanted to make a shot of both skaters. The background was underexposed for a dramatic effect. I really wanted to spotlight each skater separately but that's not easy to do with moving subjects. So I decided to give them both a Lumopro flash to light themselves. A third flash and an Orbis ringflash (on the lens) was used for fill and a graphic frame element (visible because of the 15mm fisheye we used).
