For the last couple of months I've been working countless hours on an instructional DVD about lighting. This week we entered the final post processing stage and I'm very thrilled to see all the hard work come together in the editing suite. The DVD should be available worldwide in a couple of weeks.
The idea of doing a DVD has been ripening for about two years now. I didn't want to start it head over heels. Instead I've been writing and rewriting the script many times just to make sure that it's a useful addition to the lighting videos that are already out there.
Check out a little behind-the-scenes sneak peek at www.youtube.com/watch?v=E14geuRXdgo
Another shoot for the DVD. This time with Yannick as our model. We went for an edgy look with pretty hard light.
This is just one bare speedlight overpowering the soft ambient light.

I did it, I bought a Hasselblad 500 c/m camera. Not for work, but for fun, learning and taking a dip into the rich history of photography. My lovely wife was so kind to pose for me (I should photograph her more often).
This is shot with natural light and the 80mm lens on f/2.8. I used Ilford HP5 plus (400iso). The scan isn't very good since I used a very old Epson 1240U flatbed scanner. On top of that I couldn't found the MF film holder. I just quickly made some kind of crappy holder with some cardboard. It's a pain to use but it gives a pretty neat sloppy border. Played around with the curves a bit and removed some dust in Photoshop.

Took the idea of the 70 EUR studio a bit further and replaced the two halogen worklights I used earlier by 2 Canon 580EXII's with Pocketwizards.
Both speedlights are behind a big translucent shower curtain to camera left, to create a hug soft lightsource.

I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.
A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.
More pictures soon, but we decided to publish our pictures all at the same time.

Lighting Info:
To make this shot a bit more dramatic I underexposed the background just a tiny bit. The model is then lit with a single SB-24 and a small silver umbrella from camera right, a little above eye level. Triggered with Pocketwizards.

Christina and I went out for a magic walk/talk/shoot on the longest day of the year.
The weather was pretty bad the whole day but when C arrived, she brought the summer with her. But that didn't mean we couldn't use her umbrella as a prop.
All shot with wonderful available light and the Panasonic GF1 + 20mm pancake lens.

I've set up this shoot with my muse and favorite model Erika to explore a few new ideas. I do experiment when photographing clients but I can't go as far as I wish. That's why I need this kind of freewheeling improvisation shoots from time to time.
As usual it was great to have Ake around as an assistant. Frederik, a communications student, shot some making-of footage for us.
We started out with some shots in an open area of the forest to play around with that harsh sunlight. Most people don't look good in this kind of light, but you can just throw any kind of light at Erika and get a good pic.

Testing some lighting setups with my old friend Mitzy. It's so much fun to work with someone who's a dancer/artist.
Had the chance to play a bit with the 85 1.2 L. Not easy to get the eyes sharp at 1.2 but when you do it's amazing. Just natural light from the studio skylights.

Suzanne is an Egyptian beauty who lives in Antwerp. She needed a small portfolio to audition for a part in a videoclip from her favorite Egyptian artist.
Suzanne's great looks, fantastic smile, natural posing skills and fun character made it easy for me. It's hard to believe that she never posed before and was very nervous the first 15 minutes.

This picture of Prabha who was so kind to model for us, was taken on the first day of my September 2009 2-day London workshop.
After the theoretical part I like to take the participant through the whole picture making process. I could do this by showing an example that I know how to do, but I'd rather go for the real deal, including the mistakes I make to get to a picture. So I let the participants give me an assignment and then do my best to make the requested photo. Here they asked me to do an ad for glasses. We decided to go for this "you better wear good glasses to avoid strange things from happening" idea.
LIGHTING INFO:
I exposed and set the white balance for a night look (it was the middle of the day). We lit Prabha with an orange gelled speedlight and an umbrella from above.

This image was shot for a sequence where we explain the importance of giving yourself some time to play from time to time in order to grow as a photographer. We did an improvisations shoot. The models wanted to do some kind of retro themed shoot and I wanted to shoot a bit with my Hasselblad 500cm on Kodak Tri-X 400, perfect match. We also shot a number of testshots with a DSLR and some of these actually came out pretty well too.

I've been teaming up with the famous wedding photographer Mike Larson (www.mikelarson.com) for 3 workshops organized by Calumet Photo and California Sunbounce in Belgium and Antwerp. To be honest Mike did most of the work and I just demo how I use Sunbounce reflectors in combination with off-camera flash to create a natural look. Long days but lots of fun.
By the time we were going to do some live shooting the sky cleared and we even got some nice sunlight. But Since Mike and Tom (www.fotofolio.be) were already going to shoot natural light, I showed some ways to use reflector and a speedlight to CREATE good light when there is none.

Last weekend I drove 11h to the North of Germany to meet my friends from California Sunbounce and attend a workshop by one of my all time favorite photographers, Greg Gorman.
About 15 minutes before the end of the fantastic workshop Peter Geller (aka Mr. Sunbounce) asked me if I could shoot some quick portraits of Greg on the workshop location for use in the German press. Is it terrifying to shoot one of the best photographers in the world? Sure it is, but you just have to take such chances. I quickly came up with two setups. This is the first.
I underexposed to get detail in the sky. That left Greg in the shade so we used a Hensel Porty on full power with a gridded long throw reflector to light him.

My son Kobe sometimes doesn't get the attention I'd like to give him. So once in while we take some time to do something fun with jus the guys
Kobe had been talking about fishing, so I asked one of my best friends Sven (aka Ponette) to take us fishing.
We spent the afternoon at a creek but didn't catch anything. But we took enough food for a nice bbq on the beach anyway. Sleeping in a tent on the beach was quite an adventure for Kobe. The three of us really enjoyed it.

The guys from Canon asked me if I could do some workshops at the Canon Eos Discovery Days. It was a bit weird for me to do this in front of such a huge and diverse audience in a really short time but it was big fun and I met tons of great people.
For those who couldn't be there or didn't understand my very special interpretation of the French language, I decided to try to replicate my workshop on my blog. 3 new posts are coming up.
Being a member of the Strobist cult, using speedlights off camera has been second nature to me and lots of other photographers for quite some time now. But the majority of photographers still don't know that you can do this. That's why I did a quick lighting setup, starting with just one speedlight and showing the process of adding two more lights.
LIGHTING INFO
We started out with just one 580EX II on a stand with a white shoot through umbrella to camera left. Flash was on 1/16 and triggered with the ST-E2 on camera.
To separate the model from the black background, I placed another 580EXII (on 1/16) with a black straw grid on the opposite side of the main light to give me some hair light.
We then pointed a third 580EXII at the grey seamless background to get even more separation. I'm usually not a big fan of even looking backgrounds so I asked someone to hold some branches I found in a decoration between the flash and the background. This gets me some interesting shadows in the background.

I recently did a guerilla shoot together with my friend and fellow photographer Jean. The goal was to test the California Sunbounce Micro Mini reflector with flash attachement. We decided to go on a completely unplanned mission: no location, no make-up, no models, not much gear and no concept. Just shoot what we came up with at the moment.
LIGHTING INFO
I underexposed the ambient light by a stop or so. The Sunbounce with a Vivitar 285HV flash attached (camera left), lights the subject. I think the flash was at 1/4 power.

LIGHTING INFO:
A bride with dark hair and a groom with a dark suit, shouldn't be photographed in front of a dark background. Unless you can find a way to separate the subject from the BG. A bare SB-24 (triggered with pocketwizards) on a lightstand was placed to camera right and behind the couple. I think it was zoomed in to 85mm and at 1/16th of power. This creates a nice sunny hair/separation light. The mainlight is natural light.
