A while ago I did a model shoot with the fantastic Kim Van Noten. We didn't have a real plan except for having fun while creating pictures. Ake was my kind assistant for this shoot and she also shot some video.

LIGHTING INFO:

This picture is taken at noon outdoors. There's a bare SB-24 on a stand to camera right. Placed just out of the frame on full power and zoomed in, the flash overpowered the background 2-3 stops. Triggered with PW's.

Lighting Info:

A single SB-24 strobe was placed camera right on a stand. It was raining and we didn't have any more time anyway to place light the subjects and the background separately. So I feathered the light to put light on the subjects AND the background with just one light. This is done by letting most of the light spill past the subjects while only the (less powerfull) edge of the light beam illuminates the subjects.

I've set up this shoot with my muse and favorite model Erika to explore a few new ideas. I do experiment when photographing clients but I can't go as far as I wish. That's why I need this kind of freewheeling improvisation shoots from time to time.

As usual it was great to have Ake around as an assistant. Frederik, a communications student, shot some making-of footage for us.

We started out with some shots in an open area of the forest to play around with that harsh sunlight. Most people don't look good in this kind of light, but you can just throw any kind of light at Erika and get a good pic.

Pregnancy is one of those unique times in life and it's always worth having some visual memories of that fantastic time. That's why Sarah and Bart decided to have a photoshoot before the baby was born.

It's pretty difficult to avoid making the typical classis studio shots, but we tried. Sarah and Bart proposed to shoot in the fantastic small village Mullem. We just walked around, had fun and made pictures. Sarah and Bart were great and it was fun to me too.

My little niece is getting big ... and married. She has become a beautiful woman but I still see her as that funny little kid (otherwise I'd start feeling old). We did a quick engagement shoot in my back yard.

Now that I have a nice big studio, I might as well learn how to take pictures in it. I find it much more difficult than shooting on location. That's why I'm doing a series of test shoots to try stuff out. The fantastic Kailyka helped me out on this one.

LIGHTING INFO:

I know I move my lights around a lot in function of the mood, the story and the model's features. That's why I figured to keep it rather simple in the studio. This one is made with one Elinchrom Ranger head in a medium Chimera softbox to camera right (pretty high up).

During a one-on-one workshop I teached, I remembered an old plan to do a model shoot with a simple compact camera instead of a DSLR. I could only snap a couple of pics of Ine posing for Michael but it sure did remember me to actually plan a model shoot with just a compact cam.

I'm teaming up with the famous wedding photographer Mike Larson (www.mikelarson.com) for 3 workshops organized by Calumet Photo and California Sunbounce in Belgium and Antwerp. To be honest Mike is doing most of the work and I just demo how I use Sunbounce reflectors in combination with off-camera flash to create a natural look. Long days but lots of fun.

In Amsterdam the weather was reasonable (cold and windy but no rain). We had a pretty nice sky so I choose to take our amazing bride Julia to the parking lot for a little shoot.

I bounced just one Vivitar 285HV on a Sunbounce Pro reflector for some soft yet directional light and still keep detail in the sky. We used the zebra to warm up the main light for a nice contrast with the blue sky.

Putting Julia on a couple of pallets and shooting up allowed me to get rid of the pretty ugly buildings in the background.

Shooting families isn't always easy. Different characters, looks, clothes and sometimes clashing ego's. None of these problems on this shoot. This was one of those shoots that I realise that I'm so lucky that I can do this for a living.

The guys from Canon asked me if I could do some workshops at the Canon Eos Discovery Days. It was a bit weird for me to do this in front of such a huge and diverse audience in a really short time but it was big fun and I met tons of great people.

For those who couldn't be there or didn't understand my very special interpretation of the French language, I decided to try to replicate my workshop on my blog. 3 new posts are coming up.

Being a member of the Strobist cult, using speedlights off camera has been second nature to me and lots of other photographers for quite some time now. But the majority of photographers still don't know that you can do this. That's why I did a quick lighting setup, starting with just one speedlight and showing the process of adding two more lights.

LIGHTING INFO

We started out with just one 580EX II on a stand with a white shoot through umbrella to camera left. Flash was on 1/16 and triggered with the ST-E2 on camera.

To separate the model from the black background, I placed another 580EXII (on 1/16) with a black straw grid on the opposite side of the main light to give me some hair light.

We then pointed a third 580EXII at the grey seamless background to get even more separation.

Due to very busy schedules on both sides I couldn't do this engagement session until 3 days prior to the actual wedding. The couple were dealing with some organisational stuff so the session was cut short to less than an hour of actual shooting while the daylight was fading very quickly.

We still managed to pull some shots off and more importantly: we had fun and got to know each other a bit better.

I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.

A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.

Lotte got a photoshoot as a present for her birthday. The friends and Lotte's bf, came along. I had a lot of fun shooting them. It was a dull gray fall day, but we managed to get a more sunny feeling in most of the pics.

LIGHTING INFO:

I used an Vivitar 285HV with a translucent umbrella as the main light (camera left about 35°).

Another 285HV was placed behind Lotte and her boyfriend to create some separation light. A CTO (orange) gel was added to the backlight for a sunny late afternoon glow.

I went to the first congres of the European Federation of Professional Photographers (FEP) in Spain. My camerabag was stolen on the last day so I lost a lot of money and all my images. Luckily I got to use a friends IXUS to make at least some images.

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.

When I recentely borrowed an Ixus in Valencia because my gear was stolen, I realised I had to get a good compact camera myself, so I bought a Canon Ixus. It's far from as powerful as my DSLR's but because it fits in my pocket I can take it with me all the time. Great for some memories I wouldn't have captured otherwise.

I don't do a lot of typical studio photography and usually white seamless backgrounds are considered as the enemy. So I hesitated to take on this job for fashion designer Griet Verhoeven (www.enolah.be). Having the opportunity to work with my favorite model Erika, made me do it. And I'm glad I did it. It was a valuable lesson about being open to other kinds of photography. Much to my own surprise I enjoyed this shoot a lot. The soft light and white seamless makes you focus on posing much more, because that's the only tool left to tell your story. The extremely professional attitude and fun collaboration with the model, the designer, her assistant/stylist and the photographer was also very enjoyable.

I was asked to give a demonstration about the way I work with off-camera flash on an event for the Belgian Federation of Professional Photographers. I gave a presentation for 20 minutes together with my buddy and wedding photographer Pieter Van Impe. Later that day we did a 45 minute live shoot.

I wanted to show how I improvise with the model and the location, so I didn't prepare anything. It wasn 't easy to look for backgrounds, set up lights, make pics and at the same time explain what I was doing to 60 photographers. So it's not my best work but I hope I gave an idea of the endless possibilities of small flashes.

Yesterday we bought one of those giant trampolines for the kids. They really love it and showed off the whole day. When I stuck my head into the safety net, I noticed the round shapes, she unusual angle and the nice clouds. It immediately struck me that this would be a perfect situation to photograph with my new 8mm Peleng Fisheye lens.
