2 Home made burgers left over from Thursday, 100% Beef (with red onion, salt, pepper and a little garlig and chilli powder for good luck). 2 varieties available this lunch time:

 

One Malaysian with cheese - Burger with peanut butter and hot pepper sauce plus melted mature cheddar.

 

Two: Super duper Cheese & Bacon burger, featuring 3 types of cheese (Mature cheddar (Tasty to you antipodeans), Danish Blue and cheap parmesan) xtra crispy bacon, avacado, tomato, spinach, rocket and watercress with a little mayo for good luck.

 

That'll keep a man going.

We had another good service in the churchyard at Quenington this morning, followed by a very enjoyable lunch at the Keepers Arms. The roast beef was as good as last week's! It's a good job we hadn't planned any big parties or holidays to celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary :-) Although 2020 is the year of our 'big birthdays' as well, we hadn't made any plans at all, although we'd talked about a few options. It has therefore been very pleasant to just enjoy the days in a quiet way. Mike's birthday is still to come, but I'm sure another 7 weeks isn't going to bring many positive changes COVID-wise.

 

After lunch I had a happy hour or two weeding in the garden, then wandered over to Coln to visit a church friend who has been unwell with back problems for months, but who is now improving. It was a joy to see her looking so well, compared to how she was.

I know this heifer has featured before but she was being ever so friendly and deliberately came across a field just to have a chat over the gate.

 

I think we came to a silent but deep understanding about the importance of good quality beef and the source of the best quality outdoor clothing fabric.

We had good enough weather on Saturday to have our first BBQ of the season. In fact, Monday was a better day but on that day we had roast chicken mmmmm.

 

Here you will see the illustrious chef turning the fabulous Ainsley Harriot style potatoes (par boil new potatoes, drain water, pour in olive oil and a grinding of sea salt, then BBQ them till they are nice and crisp on the outside!).

 

Also on offer were Neil's homemade organic burgers plus my lamb kebabs.

I went to the Food Show today. I usually go on a Saturday of Sunday but Jae, who was coming with me, is busy this weekend, so I took today off. There were a few fewer stalls that in previous years - perhaps due to the uncertainty of Covid restrictions - but we did taste some nice things and were able to get around easily as there were fewer people there - mostly because it's Friday, I think. It was so good to be at a food show and not have any dietary restrictions.

 

The only celebrity chef we both wanted to see was Nadia Lim and we both thought she was by far the best of all the chefs we've seen at the shows over the years. Natural, friendly, and - unlike a couple of the others I've seen - not rude to people or trotting out an over-rehearsed performance they have done so many time they could do it in their sleep.

 

Here are my purchases:

 

Chipotle & Coffee spice rub from Raptor Rubs: $10 (I use their other rubs often).

 

Pic's Boysenberry Jelly and Pic's Peanut Butter: one of each for $10, I bought two lots, one smooth and one crunchy total $20.

 

Pure Delish: Scacking Clusters: Almond & Dark Chocolate and Coconut & Ruby Chocolate. 2 for $15.

Pure Delish: Pineapple and Macadamia grain-ola and two packs of Raspberry Crunch Quinoa grain-ola 3 for $27

 

Frozen Kumara Rosti and Cauliflower Schnitzel two packs for $12

 

The Good Oil: Cold pressed extra-virgin rapeseed oil and Cold pressed extra-virgin sunflower oil 750ml each 2 for $18.

It's only just occured to me to wonder why it says 'rapeseed' when we call it 'canola' here in NZ.

 

St Andrews Limes: Lime cordial, 1 litre $14. One jar of lime and passionfruit curd and one jar of preserved lemons - (three for $20 Jae had the other jar) $13.33.

 

Nibblish Baked cranberries (2 packs) and baked strawberries 3 for $10.

 

Barry's Bay Cheeses: Aged Gouda, Cheshire, Pohutakawa Red Smoked Cheddar (six for $30, Jae also chose three) $15.

 

Beehive: Pork & Fennel Sausages $5.

Beehive: Streaky bacon 250g packs two for $10 (bought to make the chestnut cranberry roll for Christmas dinner).

 

Green Meadows Beef: Angus beef and kumara beefburgers (four for $30, Jae had two) $15.

In previous years I would also have bought some of their steak and other offerings but I now get most of my dinner protein from My Food Bag.

 

Aoraki Salmon: Cold smoked salmon 100g two packs for $14.

Aoraki Salmon: Hot smoked salmon 180g two packs for $20. I got one ordinary and one cracked pepper and vanilla bean.

 

Things that I tried but didn't like were buffalo cheese (no taste at all) and the new crackers from Rutherfurd & Meyer (too dry and not a lot of taste).

 

Quite different from what I bought at the BBC Good Food Show in the UK in 2007.

McDonald's 'Tastes of the World' menu.

I often walk past this tree stump which is well lit. on tooley st near london bridge, the burger box was a great topper.

"I asked the shop assistant to cut me some lean ham!" to which she said "Which way do you want it to lean...............left or right????" ;-)................"decided not to buy Tesco Beefburgers, I'm told they give you the trots!!" Neighhhhhh!!"

As you probably know I'm a big fan of picking up on current news stories when it comes to producing work destined for the street and the story that our beloved Tesco supermarket chain had been found to be selling BEEF BURGERS containing HORSE MEAT appealed to my sense of devilry.

    

It's funny how what you think is a great idea to start with can totally turn around in the time it takes to produce the piece - unfortunately this is a case in point and destined for the "close but no cigar" pile.

The Chips were a bit flaccid, but the burger was exactly what i was in the mood for.

Rev Gill Hopkins was licensed as the new vicar of Holy Innocents Church at High Beach in Epping Forest on Sunday (July 25) before a ‘standing room only’ packed church.

 

Horse riders, motorcyclists, parishioners and visiting clergy and councillors made up more than 160 people who welcomed Gill to High Beach and the team ministry of Waltham Holy Cross. She is the first vicar at Holy Innocents for three years.

 

As well as team vicar she will also take over the newly created post of chaplain to Epping Forest and the Lee Valley Regional Park - an area which covers some 25 parishes.

 

She was licensed by the Bishop of Barking, Rt. Rev. David Hawkins and installed by the Archdeacon of Harlow, the Ven Martin Webster.

 

Gill was previously a curate at Wickford and Runwell and has a strong background in teaching both in Essex and Yorkshire.

 

Bishop Hawkins gave a good humoured sermon referring to the ancient practice of placing burning charcoal above one’s head and - to prove his point - he lit the charcoal outside the church and placed it above his own head.

 

As the bishop fanned the embers one onlooker joked: “I hope you have brought some beefburgers Bishop.”

 

The bishop and the new vicar also met local horseriders outside the church.
