My biggest little girl had another eye surgery last week. She was frightened and it was unpleasant but she moved through everything with the quiet courage, strength, and grace that I could only hope for.
At bedtime this evening, we read one of our favourite books, Rosie Revere, Engineer. It is a brilliant book with some powerful lessons and words. My favourite, “Life might have its failures, but this was not it. The only true failure can come if you quit.”
Tonight she looked at me and told me how great that line was. I’m glad she recognized the value of those words, because I have to tell you, this little one is no quitter. I hope she takes it to heart and continues to face every fear and challenge with the bravery she has shown this past week.
At the dear age of 6 she makes my heart swell with pride, fills me with awe, and it always amazes me that she is mine.

This was fun to do!
Jo was laying on the street while a man who was walking his dog looked at us very strange and asked if she was ok! :)
This is also the 4th photo of the Urban Adventure project with Mr Wundefool!
"Urban Adventures"
Urban is the canvas for our shots and each week we have to use the same item or subject.
I use it on the right side of my photo where it exits my shot and enters Marcel's photo on the left side!
We both know the subject, but have no idea what the other one is gonna shoot!
This week the subject was stairs.

One of my favorite memories from being a kid is when me and my brother were little, and our mom used to tell us these goodnight stories before we would go to sleep.. She called them "Luftsagor" (/"Air-stories"), which were stories she would "catch" from out of the air, and then she would just make up a random story on the spot!
It always made us go to sleep with smiles on our faces..
Thank you mom for continuing to be the funniest and most entertaining mother I could ever ask for! 💜
This gentle retelling of Hayao Miyazaki's classic tale is the perfect bedtime story for your wee ones! It's just like The Lion King, only better, because no parent dies. Sweet dreams are made with books like these. Who could disagree?

Happy New Year to all my Flickr friends!
Now, yet again not much actual photography this year, however, I learned to process some more:-)
This is Alfons the black sheep at the Diamond Beach close to Jökulsárlón, south Iceland. For those not in the know, Alfons visits the little boss each evening at bedtime, and they have adventures together, usually in Iceland. Obviously, they like to play catch at the diamond beach….. :-)
And next year, I'm sure there will be more time for actual photographs.

The stillness crushed beneath my feet
As a misty rain envelopes me
With a scent and smell so sweet.

PADDY: *Reading.* “On and on the Prince went until he came to a bower, where lying on a golden couch he saw a maiden fairer than the day. A smile...”
SCOUT: “Paddy? Paddy!”
PADDY: “Yes, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Paddy, is it my birthday yet?”
PADDY: “Not quite. Just a few more sleeps now.”
SCOUT: “Oh.” *Closes eyes.*
PADDY: *Reading.* “A smile parted her rosy lips, and she looked so sweet and lovely that the Prince was unable to resist temptation and he stooped and kissed her.”
SCOUT: “Paddy? Paddy!”
PADDY: “Yes, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Paddy, is it my birthday now?”
PADDY: “What?”
SCOUT: “Is it my birthday now, Paddy?”
PADDY: “I just told you, Scout, not quite yet. There are just a few more sleeps now.”
SCOUT: “Oh.”
PADDY: *Reading.* “The moment he kissed her the spell was broken. The Princess sat up and held out her hand to the Prince, for she had been dreaming of him all the long, long years she had been asleep, so he was no stranger to her.”
SCOUT: “Paddy? Paddy!”
PADDY: “What is it now, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Paddy, are you sure is isn’t my birthday yet?”
PADDY: “Yes, I’m quite sure, Scout. It really is only a few more sleeps now.”
SCOUT: “But Paddy, I’ve already had one sleep, so it must only be closer now.”
PADDY: “When did you have a sleep, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Just then, Paddy. I closed my eyes. That’s a sleep.”
PADDY: “Oh no it isn’t, Scout. You need to have a few proper sleeps, well, like Sleeping Beauty, Scout.”
SCOUT: “What?!?!” *Alarmed.* “Like Sleeping Beauty?”
PADDY: “Yes, Scout. She had a proper sleep.”
SCOUT: “Yes, but Paddy, if I have to have two sleeps like Sleeping Beauty, then it will be two hundred years before it is my birthday! She went to sleep for one hundred years!” *Concerned.*
PADDY: “Well, maybe that was a bad suggestion, Scout. I didn’t mean that you should sleep for one hundred years like Sleeping Beauty, but that you should have a proper sleep. Just a few more proper sleeps and it will be your birthday. I promise.”
SCOUT: “You do, Paddy?”
PADDY: “Of course, Scout! Have I ever lied to you?”
SCOUT: “No Paddy!” *Shakes head seriously.*
PADDY: “Well then, you just have to trust me and be patient, Scout.”
SCOUT: "Alright, Paddy."
PADDY: *Reading.* “With the Princess awake, all the other inhabitants of the castle awakened, and oh, what a commotion there was, to be sure! Everyone talked at once, the King and Queen embraced their daughter, and the ladies-in-waiting and the courtiers begged to be allowed to kiss her hand.”
SCOUT: “Paddy? Paddy!”
PADDY: “Now what, Scout?”
SCOUT: “Paddy, when is my birthday, exactly?”
PADDY: “It’s on Wednesday, Scout. So, just a few more sleeps. Just be patient. There will be plenty to occupy you between here and there, like me finishing this faerie tale, which might take one hundred years to read if you keep interrupting, Scout.”
SCOUT: “Well, at least it would pass the time until Wednesday, when it’s my birthday, Paddy.”
PADDY: “That’s true, but you wouldn’t want the Prince and Sleeping Beauty, the King and Queen, the ladies-in-waiting and all the courtiers to have grumbly tummies, would you?”
SCOUT: “Oh no, Paddy! Why would I do that?”
PADDY: “Well, I’m just up to where the cook serves the dinner, and if I don’t read that bit, then the Prince and Sleeping Beauty, the King and Queen, the ladies-in-waiting and all the courtiers will have to wait with grumbly tummies.”
SCOUT: “Oh well, I don’t want that, Paddy, Grumbly tummies are bad! Keep reading, Paddy!”
PADDY: *Reading.* “It was a fortunate thing the cook announced that the meal had begun to cook a hundred years previously was just served up, for all the folk remembered then that they were very hungry, and trooped away to the dining hall.”
SCOUT: *Quietly.* “Grumbly tummy, Sleeping Beauty. Grumbly tummy.” *Rubs tummy vigorously under the bedcovers.*
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
If you think only children can beg for one more story at bedtime, you're soooo wrong ;-) ... even dragons do :-) !!

PADDY: "Did you have a nice day today, Emmett?"
EMMETT: "Oh yes I did, Paddy!" *Sighs and smiles.*
PADDY: "What did you enjoy the most about today, Emmett?"
SCOUT: "Well, we enjoyed playing hide-and-seek together today, didn't we Emmett?"
PADDY: *Kindly.* "That's lovely, Scout, but I was asking Emmett what he enjoyed. I know you loved playing hide-and-seek with Emmett."
SCOUT: "Oh! Sorry Paddy!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "And yes I did!" *Smiles and cuddles Dolly.*
PADDY: "Emmett?"
EMMETT: "Well, I did enjoy having elevenses with Jago and Daisy-Maud, and I liked sitting on Orson's knee as he told me all about the flowers he likes, and I liked it when you read me a story, and I really liked getting lots of big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses from Daddy."
SCOUT: *Ahem.* "Clears throat.*
EMMETT: "And of course I really enjoyed playing hide-and-seek with Scout."
SCOUT: "See! I told you, Paddy." *Smiles.*
PADDY: "And do you think you will be happy to live here with us in Daddy's house, and make it your home."
EMMETT: "Oh yes Paddy! I know I am going to be very happy here, Paddy!"
PADDY: "That's good, Emmett, because we like having you in our family."
EMMETT: "Oh thank you, Paddy!"
SCOUT: "Paddy? Paddy!"
PADDY: "Yes Scout?"
SCOUT: "Paddy, can you read the story now?"
PADDY: "Oh yes, of course, Scout!"
SCOUT and EMMETT: "Thank you, Paddy."
PADDY: *Reading.* "There was once a woodcutter and his wife who had a dear little daughter. This little girl had blue eyes and curly golden hair, and she was as sweet-tempered as she was pretty, so that all the neighbours loved her. In the village next to the one in which the woodcutter and his family lived the little girl's grandmother had her home. Granny made a great pet of the little one, you may be sure. She bought a piece of scarlet cloth and made her a pretty cloak with a hood to it, and when she was dressed in this, the folks called her Little Red Riding Hood."

Emma & her brother David had a sleepover at our place this weekend!
Aunt Johanna is the best storyteller according to them... and she reads them lots of stories before they need to go to bed!
And this idea popped in my head when I saw them sitting on the bed listening to Jo!
Bedtime stories used to make me feel you could fly between the stars and the moon if you wanted to!
Emma was an awesome model (as always)
but wanted something "cool" like her mom in
So I told her there would be stars and a moon... then she just smiled!

Sole has one book he wants read to him every night. It's called The Charmed Life Of Charlie Critter: A Photographic Journey Through A Cat's Life.
Charlie Critter lives down under with 2 other cats, 2 dogs, 2 horses and a human.
The book is a wonderful read. It describes, in each animal's voice, how they all came together to live with Amanda (human) to form one big happy family.
We can't recommend it highly enough. Flickrmail Amanda for purchase details.
