Torpor (hibernation for Lesser Tenrecs) lasts for about 5 to 6 months during the winter (typically Sept/Oct through Feb/March). It is usually triggered by lower temperatures and/or seasonal changes in light, although it has been reported in those tenrecs kept with the same temperature and light schedule year-round, they will still stop eating and sleep. They tend to be colder during this time and will only wake occasionally to drink.
Azizi was sat on my hand when this photograph was taken. Taken in natural light indoors to keep him warm.
Jimmy thought those bedtime stories were getting a little strange lately....

SCOUT: "Paddy! Paddy!" *Frightened.* "Paddy wake up!" *Shakes Paddy roughly.*
PADDY: "Wha.. what?" *Wakes up.* "What is it?" *Looks around.* "Scout! You are crying! What's wrong/"
SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! No!' 8buries his face into Paddy's chest.* "I had a bad, bad dream!"
PADDY: "Evidently you did, Scout!" *Cuddles Scout.* "What did you dream about?"
SCOUT: "I dreamed about Peter! You know my allerbeste vriend Peter, don't you, Paddy?"
PADDY: *Rolls eyes.* "Of course I do, Scout! We all know Peter. What was it you dreamt about him?"
SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! It was soooo real! In my dream, my allerbeste vriend Peter heard a knocking on the door of the Magic Portal in Mummy Marian's garden. Curious as mijn beste vriend Peter is, he went to see who is knocking on the door."
PADDY: "Who was there, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well that's just it, Paddy! he thought it was me, wearing a scary looking black hood!"
PADDY: "Well it couldn't be, Scout. You don't have anything black in your wardrobe!"
SCOUT: "Exactly, Paddy!"
PADDY: "Plus, you were asleep... dreaming... err... about Peter seeing you."
SCOUT: "I know!"
PADDY: "What happened then, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, then mijn allerbeste vriend Peter called my name and then he screamed, and then, it went all black... and... and then... I woke up... and then I woke you up!"
PADDY: "There, there Scout." *Gives Scout a big little bear hug and a snuffly kiss.* 'It was only a dream. Let me wipe away those tears." *Wipes Scout's eyes with paw.* "I'm sure Peter is fine."
SCOUT: "But it was soooo real, Paddy!"
PADDY: "Dreams, especially bad ones, always seem so real, Scout. But I'm sure Peter is fine."
SCOUT: *Sniffles.* "Do you really think so, Paddy?"
PADDY: "I do, Scout. Peter will be having fun playing hide-and-seek with Aurora and begging mijn beste vriend Oleg to come and play."
SCOUT: "Oh I hope so, Paddy!"
PADDY: "Come snuggle down with me and I will tell you a faerie tale to help you go back to sleep."
SCOUT: "Oh thank you, Paddy." *Sniggles down next to Paddy under the covers.*
PADDY: "Once upon a time..."
My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558... and www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577233464... and their Mummy Marian Kloon (on and off) . Oleg and Paddy are very similar and have become best friends. Peter and Scout are very similar, so they have become best friends too. Peter heard a knocking at the Magic Portal in the garden at Mummy Marian's and he went to answer it. he thought it was Scout, but it wasn't. The question is, who was it? My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
On a Dragon's back I could see the world.
See it from high, history unfurled.
This was a fun one but also a very hard one.
This little dragon is less than an inch in size.
Happy Macro Mondays
Very nice place, I will return there in Summer. It was the first time I was shooting for the stars. Dear people in the car on the parking lot, I'm very sorry for disturbing... but to find this place completely in darkness, with no moon and good weather gives great opportunities :-)
Unfortunately I got the first scratch in my car when I drove to the ruin. It was pitch-black and I damaged my car in a construction site in the hills, in the middle of nowhere...
I was supposed to be watching a movie last night...and it was a cute movie, "Bedtime Stories" with Adam Sandler.
But it just couldn't compete with the drama that was unfolding outside my bedroom window.
"Look, David. Look at that sunset." I leapt off the bed, and headed downstairs. "I'll be back."
We had bought one of those Pay-per-view movies, so David was concerned that I would be missing some of it. "Sheree, the movie."
"Just rewind it," I said.
"How can I rewind it? It's Pay per view."
"Well then, pause it," I said.
"I can't pause it, Sheree."
"Well try. Cause I have to shoot the sunset."
I grabbed my camera, and ran out in my nightgown. My neighbors are used to seeing me in weird clothing.
Our sunsets are ever-changing, so I would shoot, run back in, watch the film, and run out again.
"Sheree, hurry up, you are missing the movie,"
"I am shooting the sunset. Just rewind it for me when I get back."
A groan came from upstairs.
How he could watch that movie and not come down to shoot the sunset, I will never understand. But he is a frugal man, and he did pay $5.99 for the movie, so I sort of understand.
But those colors scream my name, like a siren call from the deep. And I must go.
Besides, there is always Blockbuster!!!!
Blessings,
Sheree

PADDY: *Mumbles.* "Oh Oleg!" *Tosses and turns in bed.* "Nooo Oleg..."
SCOUT: *Grunts and wakes up.*
PADDY: *Mumbles more loudly.* "Oleg..." *Tosses and turns more.* "Oleg mijn beste vriend!"
SCOUT: "Paddy? Paddy? Paddy are you alright?" *Looks at Paddy.* "Oh! Paddy is sleeping."
PADDY: *Cries out.* "Oleg I must save you!"
SCOUT: *Gasps and puts paws to mouth.* "Oh, poor Paddy! He must be having a bad dream!"
PADDY: "Oh Oleg! Oleg mijn beste vriend! No!!!!!"
SCOUT: "Paddy! Paddy! Paddy wake up!" *Shakes Paddy awake.* "Please wake up!"
PADDY: "Wh... what?" *Startled.*
SCOUT: "Paddy! You were dreaming. You were thrashing about and calling for Oleg!" *Concerned.* "You must have been having a very, very bad dream, Paddy! I was worried!"
PADDY: "It was only a dream!" *Wipes forehead with paw.* "Oh thank goodness!" *Looks at Scout.* "Oh thank you, dear Scout!"
SCOUT: "Are you alright, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Yes, yes I'm fine, Scout. But oh!" *Puts paw to mouth. "Oh in my dream, Oleg was bearknapped by a clown!"
SCOUT: "A clown, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Yes, a nasty and scary clown, Scout!"
SCOUT: "Oh! All clowns are scary, Paddy!" *Trembles.* "What a yucky dream!"
PADDY: "At least that was all that it was, Scout! A dream!"
SCOUT: "Are you sure, Paddy? Is Oleg alright?" *Concerned.*
PADDY: "Oh I'm sure he is, Scout."
SCOUT: "Hadn't you better telephone him on Daddy's bearphone?" *Still concerned.*
PADDY: "Well, Daddy is asleep, and he doesn't sleep very well, so I don't want to wake him up."
SCOUT: *Listens and hears Daddy snoring.* "What can you do?"
PADDY: "Don't worry, Scout. I'll ring Oleg when Daddy wakes up."
SCOUT: "What shall we do in the meantime, Paddy? I'm awake now, and I think you need soothing, so that you don't have a bad dream again."
PADDY: "Yes, you are right, Scout."
SCOUT: "What can you do to soothe yourself after a bad dream, Paddy?"
PADDY: "I know!" *Switches on lamp.* "We'll read, until we feel sleepy again."
SCOUT: "Oh! What a good idea, Paddy! Just no books with clowns in them, alright?"
PADDY: "Oh absolutely not, Scout! I know! How about we read a book about a bear at the seaside?"
SCOUT: "Oh that sounds perfect, Paddy!"
PADDY: "Good Scout." *Goes and fetches Paddington at the Seaside.
SCOUT: "Look Paddy! That's you! At the seaside!" *Claps paws in delight.*
PADDY: "Yes it is, Scout!"
SCOUT: "Will you read the story to me, Paddy?"
PADDY: "Yes of course I will, Scout."
SCOUT: "Thank you, Paddy!"
PADDY: "Oleg, Oleg mijn allerbeste vriend, please tell me that you are alright. I know it was just a dream, but it seemed so real!

Paddy and Scout are reading my first edition copy of "Paddington at the Seaside" - a Paddington picture book for young readers - written by Michael Bond and illustrated by Fred Banbery, published by Collins books in 1975. This book is very special to me, for it is also autographed by Michael Bond, the author of all the Paddington books whom I met. Paddy met him too and he shook Paddy's paw as well as my hand, and we had a lovely chat!

(I know this is old, but I'm pushing it to the front to quote the following. Puts things into perspective.)
Quoting from Nienie. Visit and read.
I just received a phone call from my dear brother in law Andrew, who reports that Lucy is in labor. I love imagining Lucy at the farm house giving birth to her daughter Besty Aurora (named after yours truly).
I have thought several times this month that if I use the accident's time to a pregnancy, my baby would be due this month. Then only joy would come about...even those late night nursings are far better than late night pain.
But alas, its not true.
No cuddly baby to hold, nurse and love. Just questions, frustrations and grief. But that's that. Enough of that 'woe is me' crap.
Today I:
Enjoyed watching the girls lay in the sun sprawled out on the trampoline. The sun shinning and warming their bodies.
Nic and Ollie sat in the garden like cabbage-patch dolls...of course Gigs was naked.
Page came down to clean my house for me.
And Mr. Nielson made me whole wheat waffles with blueberry's and strawberry's atop with warm maple syrup.
Let me talk about Mr. Nielson for awhile.
Mr. Nielson thinks I am cool. He told me so. He also tells me he loves me every hour of the day. Our relationship has changed a lot since we moved in together again in February. Our bodies very different but our hearts the same. Lots and lots of love.
Most days I look in the mirror and cringe at what I see. I have a whole reconstructed nose, platypus lips and discoloring.
Call me vain, but it hurts.
No longer do I have the freckles and natural rosy cheeks. My hair is still short and scars cover a good portion of my face.
Dr. Coates in the burn unit said to me at my latest appointment;
"This too shall pass"
I wanted to slap her. How does she know. I turned bitter. But I still think about it, so I must have actually needed to hear that so I don't want to slap her anymore.
Mr. Nielson sees these trials in my life and loves me just the same. He has never stopped. Daily we talk about the accident sometimes sarcastic and sometimes serious.
Today was serious.
He recalled when he had woken up from the coma, everybody wanted to know what happened. Who was flying? Why did we crash? Was the plane out of power? And he didn't want to tell anyone anything except for me. He felt out of control and misunderstood. He told me he needed his "wifey".
Days after he woke up, he begged to see me. The nurses stabilized Mr. Nielson well enough so he could be wheeled to my room. I lay bandaged up like a mummy with eight different apparatuses keeping me alive and there he talked. He let everything out.
Of course I don't remember our visits while I slept but I know he mustered everything he could to get to me everyday so we could "chat".
I will never know what it was like for him day after day in tears seeing the love of his life the woman who bore him children, fed him the best meals of his life ( I might add) lay silent for so long while in a coma.
Why we go through hardship is something that is necessary. Life wasn't meant to be easy, we all know that one. Despite all the junk I deal with everyday, I still have Mr. Nielson. We are still alive, laughing at funny movie lines, kissing children, watching weekend mindless television and eating at Cafe Rio for goodness sake.
He will love me even if I don't. He will kiss me when I cry. He will (and does) jump for joy when I wake up in a good mood.
He is the best.
So even though my "baby" should be due this month he gently reminds me to press forward as a pregnant elephant.
For their gestation period is 22 months.
awesome.

Bruno: Alright Julia. Time to read me my story.
Julia: Your story?
Bruno: Yup. I need a good bedtime story if I'm going to sleep well and feel refreshed.
Julia: But I had to wake you up to ask you if you wanted to get on the bed with me.
Bruno: See, that proves my point.
Julia: Really? I thought I proved my implied point that you don't need a bedtime story to nap well.
Bruno: Nope. That nap was interrupted, so not refreshed. Now let's try again, and this time lets do it with a bedtime story first.

Bruno is the most likely of our pack to join someone for a lie down in bed. Always.
This was Julia's idea for a photo this week. I had other ideas that wouldn't work because of gale force winds, but Julia came up with this perfect plan for his photo instead.

Hey guys! Finally I was able to do this extremely fun photoshoot, with the help of my friend Meryl Waldo here, who made it possible to use these glowing fish lanterns! Meryl works at a nearby studio in Ann Arbor that makes these glowing luminaries and other large sculpted and painted figures too! In fact, coming up very soon is the studio’s annual FoolMoon Luminary Festival! Please check it out if you’re local, its going to be a BALL! I shall indeed be there!
As for the outcome of this photo, I am extremely pleased, and it was so fun to do. It is also going to be a part of my Bedtime Stories Series so check that out!
And lastly, if you would like to stay better connected with my work, feel free to bookmark or add me at these places:

P.S. people keep saying this must be Dr. Who inspired but I don't even know what that is, and after google image search, I am still very confused!!!
